  1. I have a friend who flew the F-84F before and after Vietnam in both the USAF and the ANG. He also flew, operationally, the F-100 (the 354th Fighter Wing when they were stood up at Myrtle Beach. We have most of the squadron schemes for that Wing in the download section) and the F-105 during the war with the VA ANG. He liked the F-84 overall, it was a solid and dependable plane. He lost one in the Chesapeake Bay, though, after losing power and bailing out of it when the ejection seat failed. The most amusing story about the F-84 he told was when he and a couple wingmen pounced on some F-4 Phantoms that were flying down to Florida and engaged in a mock impromptu dogfight for a bit. The F-4s were laden with fuel and lost.

Let's see, there was also an exchange tour with the Marines flying F-8Ds off the Oriskany and an amusing run-in, while he was with the 354th in Aviano on nuclear alert, with Yeager.

  2. I like that F-31A Sparrowhawk. :)

Talos, your going to need a back story as to how the JMSDF was able to purchase the CVs, since Article 9 prevents that. But, I like this idea! Nice work!

    Thanks!

That's why I figured that they would change the constitution or find a loop-hole somewhere (donation?) to circumvent that, since the US would need a carrier-capable allied force in the area to oppose the small Chinese fleet being built.

    Wow they look amazing!

I started to work on a fictional F-14E about a month ago but I´m just a beginner at 3ds max (actually, I don´t know anything about it, I just follow the steps in the tutorials here) and I may need some help.

But so far I have all the structure and flight surfaces and opening cargo doors (it supposed to be stealth so it must have internal ammo)

EDIT: It also has canards but the form doesn´t change that radically.

    Thank you, cp.

I did an F-14E as well, it's the single-seat counterpart to the F-14F and the delta-winged EF-14G. I didn't go the stealth route with them due to a couple factors, though, since it's rather limiting for designs (plus I find the 4th Gen. plane designs much more interesting) and these are supposed to basically be the Tomcat's equivalent to the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

The other two versions are shown here:

F-14E (this particular one doesn't have the bulged spine with additional ECM gear, but it is available on F-14Es)

  3. Wow, nice. Any backstory on the JMSDF Cats?

(And the only thing I can associate the word Maikaze with is some doujin/fan studio.)

    Thanks, kct.

The backstory I've worked up is that during the 1990s, Russia and China managed to develop economically and militarily again and the US allowed the sale of two older carriers that had just been decommissioned, USS Independence and USS Ranger. The JMSDF also purchased several squadrons of F-14Fs and EF-14Gs to fill the fighter and ELINT support/A2A refueling/SEAD/ASW role on their ships. They also purchased F/A-18C/Ds for the fighter/attack role.

Maikaze means "Whirlwind" in Japanese, I took it from a WWII destroyer in the IJN with the same name. I have all the squadrons named after "-kaze" names. Hatsukaze (Year's First Wind), Amatsukaze (Heavenly Wind), etc. Incidentally, Maikaze is also the name of the main character in the aircraft anime "Stratos 4", she's a TSR-2 pilot. I watched it a few weeks after I used the name on the squadron.

  4. The Navy however did use the glove vanes in A-G mode on its F-14As. Namely pretty much every A unit in some fashion before they upgraded, except for VF-103 Sluggers(before they took over the Jolley Rogers), and VF-74 when they got F-14A+and maybe VF-31 and VF-11 when they took the brand new F-14D's in the early 1990s. VF-154 and VF-211 continued to use the glove vanes(at least in the bombing mode) until they converted to Super Hornets in 2003-4.

The glove vanes were removed from the F-14B and D rebuilds when they went through the rebuild process. The new build F-14A+(F-14B) and F-14D never had them.

Interestingly the AST-21 model had a Super Hornet like "hood" that filled the area taken by extended glove vanes a larger LERX.......but back to topic, sorry, I just like to drivel about tomcats.

The AST-21's extended gloves performed multiple tasks. One, increased fuel capacity. Two, performed the same role as the vanes. Three, cured a structural weakness, and I think a fatigue problem, with that area of the plane. I added them to the F-14NGs I showed in the other thread, so I'm posting this old and outdated top-view of the EF-14G to show them for the people who haven't seen them before.

  5. JAT, any chance we could get JDAMS to active home on designated targets instead of just the main objective? The only way I can think is to actually make them an LGB, maybe we can package a different JDAM version with the plane?

    Check out

To see what I'm talking about. The SAR picture and target designation is Wh00t.

go to about 1:12 for an awesome demonstration of the flight, sensor and weapons delivery capability of this aircraft!

There's also some good HUD references in there, as well.

Won't they guide to ground targets if you have a seeker installed on the plane (EOTS, Pave Knife, etc)? It wouldn't be a problem to convert them to LGBs in the Weapons Editor anyway.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, this plane is looking gorgeous. I'm looking forward to when she's released.

  6. If we were to "rebuild the tomcat" using modern technology but with a mostly similar design, it would be cheaper, easier to maintain, lighter, faster, stronger, and more survivable. Mabey someone should design a Ficticious F-14E variant with 1-2 seats, glass cockpit, HUD/HMD single piece canopy and all that other good stuff.

    How about something like these:

  7. The Jolly Rogers are definitely on the list of squadrons I'm going to paint. If I can find a clean reference for the tail insignia, then the Pukin' Dogs will come too. I'm planning three VF-103 variations, yellow stripe, white stripe, and low-vis. Oh, and a few VF-111 Sundowner planes.

76.IAP-Blackbird: These are just drawings I've done. I did the lineart in MS Publisher and then colored, shaded, and highlighted in GIMP. I would love to see these plane designs as models, yeah, but my model skills are still in their infancy. If someone wanted to build one, that would be great.

  8. Heh, wow, it's been awhile since I posted here. Anyway, I got involved with other projects, but I recently went back and started on the F-14NGs again.

F-14FJ JMSDF Blue scheme. The markings are meticulously researched, completely handmade except for the roundel, and should be 100% grammatically correct.

  9. I couldn't find the FLANKER on the combat ace sight anywhere, not under Russian fighter or aircraft of the PLAAF. Luckily the site above worked out pretty well. I can't believe someone actually made the IDF, now that's obscure! As far as the Mirage-2000, I wonder if there is anything that can be substituted and tweeked.

It's actually under the Marcfighters part of the site.

  10. Hmm, I guess I wasn't far off on the pedals. I'll enlargen them a bit and drill the holes in them.

Looks like in DYRL they just made stuff up too, although it looks like engine gauge stuff may be there on the left. That pic of the HUD is pretty neat though, gave me some ideas. I'm thinking of moving the RWR to where the left MFD is now, especially since Craig's is so impressive. I don't suppose you have a color shot of the DYRL panel? Thanks.

I have it on DVD, I'll get a screencap for you.

  11. The surface of the pedal is just a flat metal with holes in it, like those flashy racing pedals you see in a lot of tuner cars. They're connected to the seat by arms that go on the outside of the pedals. I'll try to hunt down a screenshot in the OVA, but here's a lineart that shows the top of the pedals (note that it's not the finished panel design though).

It's not the YF-19, but this is the panel layout and HUD design for the DYRL VF-1, which was far ahead of the original tv show's. It might help inspire you.

Oh yeah, looking awesome! This is going to be one impressive addon.
