anyone know how to get a old microsoft FF stick to work in XP

I have a old but very good Microsoft FF pro stick with a microsoft serial to usb adapter(no serial port on my computer only usb) It's a HP pavillion running windows XP. The computer doesn't recognise the stick as even being there. Anyone know how to get windows xp to recognise the stick? I want to use it for "BOB 2" which has software to run the ff stick if the computer will just recognise it. It will run in XP with the serial adapter on my older computer but not with the usb connection on my new HP.
