The T-28D and Cambodia...Friend or Foe?

Although the USA started delivering T-28Ds to Cambodia already in August 1962, the type did not see any prominent service before the early 1970s. In fact, by 1969 most Trojans of the AVRK(Aviation Royale Khmere) were non-operational due to the lack of spares. The Royal Cambodian government had become increasingly hostile to its South Vietnamese neighbors and therefore lost favor with the U.S. government who proptly embargoed service and spare parts for the T-28's.

After Gen. Noi came to power in a 1970 coup, the Cambodian air force was re-named the Aviation Nationale Khmere (AVNK). An attempt was made to restore relations with the American Government and provide limited armed patrols of the Ho Chi Mihn Trail through Cambodia. All T-28D's were brought to operational condition by USAF technicians, and were given new markings which had a striking resembelence to the USAF roundel. AVNK T-28Ds proved highly effective in combat but their operations were hampered by many elements, starting with restrictive orders from the Cambodian regime, right to the U.S. limitations about the amount of ammunition they could spend per single day!
