Tip of the day

Get some decent headphones and then fly OFF...my god the difference it makes to the intensity and atmosphere of the game...superb...only I get paranoid some one is knocking at the door or calling my name!!

I use the Sound Tweaks mod and her prop's mods and Creaghorns lighting mod (All superb and add to the game...if only the planes showed more damage when their hit...like a few bullet holes...oh well maybe in Phase 4)

I'm not saying I don't see damage I do....but it takes an awful lot of shooting to show any...it's either catastrophic or nothing...i.e My wing tip clipped anothe rplane and I saw a damaged wing...I've set planes on fire and seen them lose a wing etc...but I've also watched the AI fight it out a few times and today even I saw a Fokker EIII get hit countless times and I saw no real visable damage, the plane smoked abit but hits where hitting the wing and fusealge and nothing was there to show for it....RoF is lot better on this point (though in RoF I think the planes loose there wings abit to often and the warping can look unnatural, rather like metal than canvass)

Yes I have used headphones before and suffered the same paranoia even though I know no one would be knocking...still if they are sod em...I'm fighting for my life here..

There is a lot of damage simulated in OFF, be sure, Wodin. Just see through the "Screenshots" thread.

Go to "Workshops" and check, if you have skin resolution on "highest" (or however it's called) - then you don't see all damage.

Set that on the medium (normal?) setting.

Have it set on medium....I understand all kinds of damage is caused...just I've had my wing hit numerous times and when I take a look I see nothing...I understand that many bullets miss but when they are hitting it takes alot before you see any damage on your plane..would just like to see some superficial damage shown...RoF hits the mark with this...however other aspect like the scenery and clouds look so much better in OFF. Plus the amazing campaign and a living war going on...

I hope OFF 4 has lighting and shadows as good as RoF and a more detailed graphical effect with regards to damage...

I play Flanders Fields with these X4 Headsets. 5.1 sound, wireless, they're really great. Not the best headsets for PC gaming by any means, but I bought them a few years ago to use with the XBox 360 (they're intended for use with the 360 but you can get them to work on a PS3 easily enough and on a PC with a little doing), though they've come out with a new one that's even better or so I've read. Great for watching Babylon 5 off Netflix streaming, Seven Samurai on PS3 Blu-ray or any kind of gaming. Lately I've used them to play old Infinity Engine RPGs (namey Baldur's Gate) and am astounded by how much ambiance is lost through traditional speakers and how much it enhances the gameplay. Same story with Flanders Fields, the immersion level skyrockets with a good pair of headsets.

As far as damage goes I don't really worry myself about it. I fly with the high-res models so I don't see bullet damage but time was I'd never see it anyway since I was too busy trying to aim to pay attention to those little details. In general I assume I miss wildly until I see the little bugger in flames MiniGun.gif

You forgot to add: The aircraft you fly in OFF are a spot on duplicate of the real thing.

Not. No throttle in the Alb Ds, no guns on the BE2s, RE8 cockpit, etc. This isn't an attack; overall the planes are very nice but they are not spot-on duplicates. And to answer Wodin's question, from what I understand the CFS3 engine will not support the kind of dynamic self-shadowing seen in First Eagles, Wings of Prey, and Rise of Flight. Certainly not the fault of OBD.

I never flew ROF, but some of the explosions shown on Utube were nothing short of amazing.

I have; I own RoF. If you mean aircraft exploding in mid-air then, yes, it is amazing. Doesn't happen very often, at least by my experience, but from selected posted videos one may get the impression it does. And before it is claimed this never happened in the First World War, read on:

"59th Victory.

Spad One-Seater. English.

--------------

When flying with four gentlemen of my Staffel 11 I detected in 3000 meters below me a single Spad flying above a close cover of cloud. The adversary was probably trying to find low-flying German artillery planes. When he came out of the sun, I attacked him. He tried to escape by diving, but in this moment I shot at him and he disappeared through the clouds. Following, I saw him falling below the clouds and then he exploded in 500 meters height. The new, very bad F.B munition had done a lot of damage to my plane and pressure pipes, sucking pipes, etc. were shot through. It would have been impossible for me to follow an only slightly wounded Adversary and I had to try and turn in as soon as possible.

If all that destructive force ever really existed in WW1, it would have surely be over in a few months.

It did; it wasn't.

This is my feeling on the two sims...if you want to fly a WW1 plane buy RoF if you want to fly a plane in WW1 buy OFF....I play both...more time is spent on OFF due to the atmosphere...though I go back to RoF due to the feeling of flight and beautiful planes...love the fact there is no throttle on the Airco and EIII just a blip switch....I will say RoF has the edge on the plane sim aspect...but OFF has spades of atmosphere and a superb campaign system...oh and loads of planes to fly...

Also no the planes very rarely explode...I've seen it once so far and it isn't really a hollywood explosion either just looks catastrophic. My niggle is sometimes the wings when bent look more like metal than canvas....

By the way I'm not knocking OFF in any way...at the moment I see it as a superior game. Due to it's engrossing campaign system, it's amazing atmosphere, it's better looking scenery and clouds, it's massive scale and all in all more entertaining.

RoF will I believe take over from OFF phase 3...then it will be upto OFF phase 4.

Thanks for the tips Uncleal....I do have damage messages on as I didn't know you could turn them off...I don't use labels though nor padlock...always hated padlock in any sim anyway...
