"The BlackHawks"

ABOUT BLACKHAWK

Blackhawk ran, in various incarnations, from 1941 until 1990. The comic book debuted during WWII, portraying the adventures of an international commando team that flew Grumman F5Fs. An expatriate Polish-American fighter pilot named Bart Hawk, known as Blackhawk, founded and led the group. Blackhawk was very popular during the war years, matching Captain America, the Flash, and Batman in circulation. After the war readership waned, and the original publisher, Quality, folded. DC comics acquired Blackhawk in 1957, publishing it monthly until 1968. During this Silver Age period the Blackhawks flew F-90s and F-105s, mirroring the James Bond craze by fighting a succession of communist spies and evil scientists. Revivals during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s were critically noteworthy but commercially unsuccessful. Today, the Blackhawks occasionally crop up in a DC cameo, usually set during WWII. However, the Silver Age Blackhawks are ideal characters for the Strike Fighters milieu. Anybody who's ever read a 1960s Blackhawk comic will get a kick from flying with the team in Burning Sands. As BlackHawk himself might say, "Don't join a bunch of phonies when you can fly with a REAL mercenary squadron!"crandall-s.gif
