I read a story about this happening in real life somewhere.

If I remember correctly it was when the Iraqis were giving the Kurds all that trouble with helicopters right after Desert Storm. A flight of F-15C's was patrolling the Northern No-Fly Zone and locked on to what they thought were helocopters flying low and slow. One of the aircraft fired a Sparrow and got a good hit. The only problem was that the "helicopter" was actually a car driving along a road.

Anybody else remember this?

Granted, it's still a bug but it is theoreticly possible for a sparrow to hit a target on the ground... If the firing aircraft has a good enough radar, that is.
