themightysrc 5 Posted March 29, 2011 Further to Olham's excellent recent thread about one's emotional input to OFF, and to announce that I'M BACK YOU BUGGERS, I thought I'd open this one. When I'm flying - inevitably in some two seater deathtrap - and have the TAC on, I do get a slight, er, puckering moment when the TAC lights up with craft unknown. Now, I know all the rules and wheezes for identifying them, but I can't help having and slightly trouser moistening moment when I see those horrid little dots pop up. Am I alone in this - being a twin seat jockey - or do all of you brave, bold scout pilots get that same, bad, feeling?
RAF_Louvert 101 Posted March 29, 2011 . WELCOME HOME SI! And even though I don't fly with TAC, I still have those same "Holy Excrement!" moments when I see the tiny little specks off in the sky, or the friendly AA popping at something as yet unseen. It's even more pronounced when I'm flying something like a Quirk. Good times...good times. Now then, off to the pub with you, and I'll buy the first round. . Javito1986 14 Posted March 29, 2011 Welcome back SRC! Lou, I usually fly with TAC off but just now I had it on during a dogfight and found it very helpful. I know, obviously, but hear me out. It was set to 1NM, so I wasn't seeing a whole lot. But it helped 'enhance' the experience. We were embroiled with Jasta 36's bunch and suddenly on the TAC a big blot of 'blue' showed up and I knew it was our A Flight swooping in to the assist. And sure enough within seconds there was Richard Mayberry swatting an Albatros off my tail. Bless his heart. The arrival of A Flight is something I'm sure I would notice as B Flight Leader if I was actually "there", but staring through the monitor as I do I would've completely missed it until Mayberry actually started shooting. So maybe I'll leave it on from now on during a dogfight and leave labels off. Onto the question... I had my own "OH DEAR GOD" moment yesterday during a balloon bust. Had the TAC on but it was set to vehicles so I could see waypoints, had just maneuvered to start an attack run at the balloon, checked my tail, all clear, wait a minute, checked my tail again, OH DEAR GOD NOT CLEAR THAT'S AN ALBATROS SQUADRON ABOUT TO KILL ME. The closest one was at about distance 400, he was right on us, and more of his friends behind him. Honestly I didn't feel any physical sensation. I didn't feel much of anything, since I completely do not remember the rest of the mission up to the point when we landed at my aerodrome. Thinking back on it now it's all one big blur of black crosses, clouds, and shooting things until my drum was empty. I was mildly amused to return completely ammunition free only to see after the mission I had exactly a 0% accuracy. Maybe I just panicked and started shooting air? I'll be looking forward to an update on Major Timm's 'adventures' and any other advice you have for my 'rookie' 'Bee' pilot (first 'report' being drafted as we speak!) . . . and it's Lou's shout ! themightysrc 5 Posted March 31, 2011 Hello all, and many thanks for the welcome back! I'm most grateful for your warmth and friendship. The reason I can now do a bit on here is that my future course is becoming a little clearer - I'm on a Java programming course, at the end of which, I hope, I'll be able to bag a decent job. More importantly for OFFing, I'm not frantically scanning jobs sites all day long and whoring myself out to companies who apparently aren't interested. There's a lesson there. WRT the posts thus far. I generally fly with TAC on, as I feel that it represents the other senses that a computer game - no matter how sophisticated - cannot do. Maybe a sixth sense if you like. Mr. Ho, you will probably be pleased to hear that I've started flying again as Major Timm, and you can expect some more of his deathless prose in due course, assuming he doesn't get topped in his RE8. I've missed flying and everyone's company, and I'd just like to say how touched I am to welcomed back so roundly. You're a top bunch of people. Cheers, Si
