firing a sidewinder

ok this might be a stupid question but how do u fire a sidewinder missle? all i hear is the growl but i cant get a lock. ive even come right behind planes abt 1 mile at their 6 o' clock and it still doesnt lock... :blink:

Which Sidewinder?

Early versions really weren't that good with very tight limits to their sensors.

 

Just in case you didn't know a lock is signalled by an increased level of growl.

I wait untill I am under 2 miles and wait for a constant tone, them aim the pipper just alittle above the target. The best thing is to always (even with later sidewinders) to fire from the rear cone. It seems some of the IR missles are alittle better than the others. Early AIM-9B's go ballistic very easy.
