stalkervision 0 Posted January 29, 2007 How many people know what this means? "You meet a better class of people in the vertical" ?
Dagger 21 Posted January 30, 2007 While I've never tried to take a WW1 fight into the vertical,I do in alot of WW2 sims, well depending on the aircraft i'm in.Some aircraft have such a power advantage that I love to put it to use in a Vertical fight, power up and if they follow wait for them to stall,if they don't follow, loop over and find my self with the Alt. and speed advantage. Ya, I should have posted this in the jet and ww 2 sections huh? My mistake.. I suppose it applies to ww 1 fighter also it's just a bit harder to do without having your wings come off in a dive. The spad and Fokker d7 could probably accompolish this though quite well though..

Dagger 21 Posted January 30, 2007 For the record it's because planes turn much quicker in vertical manauvers then in horozontal... Not only that, but in the vertical you can cause your opponent to bleed energy faster, but you must be careful as you do the same.If you have the power and energy advantage going into the vertical is a great way to gain an advantage you might other wise have missed. For some reason alot,if not most,of the new guys who fly on-line try to do continuous loops, and this plays into the more experienced pilots hand(not sure why people think loops are so good)This is where knowing your aircraft, and knowing your opponents strengths and weakness comes into play. Also SA is of utmost importance now,a fight in the vertical isn't so much a"turn fight"it's like a dance, you're not really turning as you are spinning on your axis, once energy is lost you'll stall and once this happens unless your bandit has already fell you are a dead pilot.A great example is in the early years of WW2 the Zero pilots would get the F4F pilots to try and pull into a vertical fight with them, once committed to this type of fight the Zero was the winner in the majority of the fights. Why? power and energy, the F-4F was was under powered compared to the zero,it would climb run out of energy and fall, the zero would just wing over and set him up for the kill. This is still taught as part of ACM to pilots today. Will you meet a better class of people in the vertical??Not sure BUT you will be greeted by a much better class of pilot.Loops are best left of the airshows, unless you can turn them into a split S or emmilman. If one never learns this skill one puts oneself to a great disadvantage. "you will be greeted by a much better class of pilot" That is exactly the answer.. Dagger 21 Posted January 31, 2007 Oh sorry I misread it..yes when you're in a fight and it goes vertical,it's time ot pull the belts tight as you're up against someone with training and knowledge of who to fly and fight. you will be greeted by a much better class of pilot Oh yeah..most of the time. The best thing I can say is learn your aircraft, and push it to the limit and maybe a fraction over. Then learn your enemy.Fight to your strength and his weakness.
