I was with VA-15 onboard the USS Independence when we launched an attack on Syria in 1982.

Our XO, CDR Leslie Kappel, was flying A/C 314, and it was hit by shrapnel from a SAM. He landed back aboard, stating the aircraft was an "Alpha" jet; which meant it was ready to get fueled and relaunch.

Well, upon a quick further visual inspection, it was VERY quickly determined that the aircraft was not going up again for a while!

I have had this picture on my wall for years. I thought it was time to scan it, and post on Bio.

During the same attack, CAG Ed Andrews was flying another of VA-15's aircraft, and was shot down. He was rescued and brought back to the Indy, safe and sound....
