Hello all,

 

Just bought the game yesterday (very sweet) and I thought I would check out the forums and this looks like one of the best, of course being a rookie (oh how I hate the word newbie!!) I of course have a few questions and suggestions:

 

1) I have dl'ed some great planes and I was wondering if there was a way to use specific planes in a dogfight i.e. F4 v Mig 19 or F86 v Mig 15, in 1v1 or 2v2 etc? Basically can you choose the enemy type and number?

 

2) How do you save the single missions, does it save after you complete the mission?

 

3) I dl'ed the afterburner replacement but I could not understand the readme, something about extracting and replacing files so if someone could clarify this for me?

 

4) Being a Phantom phreak I would like to know if anyone is working on the other versions i.e. F4J/S (without the sensor under the nose) and the F4K/M (or FG1 & FGR2) as the RAF Phantom is my favourite (see my avatar) and the RAF skins I have don't look as good on the more narrow fuselage of the B

 

I will probably think of more stuff to ask but in the mean time thanks for reading this and keep up the great work.

I'll try to answer your questions

 

1- You can create your own custom missions. You can specify just about eveything you want. It is not very easy since we do not have an official Mission Editor. Go to the missions forum and search. Keith Bedford released a 0.5 Beta Editor and I posted a document with some of the mission file variables.

 

2- No Save options

 

3- There are a lot of files in compressed "Cab" like files, you can recognized them by the .cat extension. You need a cat file extractor (search the download section) to get to the files to modify them. If the files are outside the cat file and in the proper path (not very straight forward) they will load first, if the files are not found, the program goes to the cat file.

 

4- Search here or other SFP1 web sites, most of them are based on the current models with ini modifications and there are quite a few skins around. Start in the links here or at ThirdWire's links

OK, starting on no3, I just use the software to insert the replacement TGA file into the .CAT file?

No4, I have some skins already I was just wanted to know if somebody was working on the other F4 models so I have something to look forward to.

You don't need to extract anything for the new afterburner to work. Simply place the afterburnerfire.tga file into the flight folder and the game will "see" it before the old one.

There is no way to add to the cat files (at least now), if the file is outside the cat file and in the proper path, it will get loaded first.

 

For example, the afterburner.tga file should reside in the Flight subdirectory.

Aircraft and ground object models should go to the Objects subdir

Insignias go to the Objects/Aircraft subdir

Any specific aircraft mod go in their own subdir.

 

Like I said before, there is no document that specifies the path sequence for the files, a lot was found by trial and error by many people.

OK, I think I get this, for a f4 v Mig17 1v1 I take just the first 3 paragraphs above and change the plane names and aircraft numbers and to make it 2v2 just change the aircraft numbers, is that right?
