WW1 vets

Just thought id share what i have just been watching on tv. The armistice day ceremony was on between 10.00 and 11.30 this morning live from trafalgar square.

 

The last 3 surviving members of britains armed forces from the great war were there paying their respects. Each was a member of the three armed forces (Navy, air force, army) and they each had a wreath to put at the monument. I noticed that the air force veteran insisted on putting his own wreath at the monument rather than letting one of his escorts doing it.

 

They later went on to explain each of the veterans part in the conflict and it turns out that the regular army vet is the last surviving soldier that fought in the trenches. The royal navy vet fought in both world wars, and the air force vet turned out to be a founding member of the RAF (during the first world war the army was also responsible for aircraft). These people I believe deserve the utmost respect from younger generations

 

I think it is important to remember the people that gave everything during the great war so that future generations could live in peace.

In the late 80's I had the honor of "watching" a family friends father who was suffering from alzhiemers.He was a colonel who was a great war vet.he couldn't understand why he couldn't be in his home or who his wife was but the mans mind could recall with detail the trenches and the men whom he fought beside and led into battle.I wish I had the forsite to write the stories he told me down.he passed away a few months latter and now 20 years latter I still think of the stories and the faceless names he would tell me about.Im my mind WW1 was the last war where people went out thinking about glory and adventure.the realitiies were that modern industialism made it into a blood bath.those men who fought on all sides have nothing but my respect,every war is unique but somthing about the great war has always captured my interest.God bless all veterans of all wars and lets hope that in the future no blood needs to be shed.
