Personally I have abandoned the TAC Display, and actually made it through a mission, till being hit by an enemy AC. But on another note, while the DiD standard is certainly a most splendid idea, we really must take it a wee bit further, to not only delineate the known parameters of settings in OFF, but in flying the Missions as well. As evidenced in a recent Thread it appears as though it is a bit add hoc, who flies what Mission, and to what degree they persevere their target. Perhaps then we need to establish " Ground Rules of Engagement"? Passing a Mission over, i.e. "Scramble" because it is significantly suicidal, may be less than cricket. Similarily for the Germans attacking a ground target without any ordinance, may be viewed as equally suicidal. However, because DiD is part of OFF, aren't all Missions therefore part of OFF? Could it be cherry picking, by avoiding the confrontations, or by applying the token effort, that the spirit of the exercise is lost, thereby reflecting directly on any substance that DiD may have as to a measurement of accomplishment? The flight leader has the final say in how, when or indeed if a given target is attacked, depending on the situation prevailing at the moment. If he chooses to fire at it from altitude, drop personal grenades upon it, or ignore it altogether in favour of enemy planes covering it from above, that's his call to make. Just as it's his call to decide the ground-fire is too severe and not attack it at all. It's also the player's choice to take the role of a complete coward and run away from everything he sees. How the player chooses to behave within the sim environment, so long as it does not step outside the boundaries of the realism standard applied in DiD, is his/her business. You may argue that the game does not provide a function where an AI flight member can report a leader for dereliction of duty, if the leader's behaviour could even remotely be called such. Well, the game also fails to provide hand-grenades, such that could be dropped upon a target from altitude and fully satisfy the requirements of an ordered attack (do the orders stipulate low-level strafing? No, they do not). Soldiers routinely interpret orders in such a way as to satisfy the letter of the requirement and offer the greatest chance of personal survival. When given orders to attack ground-targets I shall continue to fire a few rounds from altitude and drop hand-grenades upon it (with suitably modified fuses of course, they have a looong way to fall ).
Rickitycrate Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I fly Did exclusively. I take the missions as they come and try obey the commands. Discretion enters into any situation. I do not think it necessary to delineate types of mission or completions. At least for now as I do not know of any body being overly successful in their DiD campaigns at this time. Whatever we are doing now is hard enough and if we get a break or 2 in our favour regarding mission types so be it. Just my thoughts if I understand your post correctly british eh. Cheers!
