Okay, so I'm rather enamored with the Voodoo. I don't know what it is about it, but I just love it. I've been reading up a lot on it lately. I downloaded the F-101A, F-101B, F-101C, and RF-101C for WOV. I know only the RF-101 was used in Vietnam, but it's still fun to have the others there. Anyways, I read that there were proposed F-101D and F-101E variants with J-79 engines. I decided to make my own version of what I think an F-101D could have been. I basically gave it the capability to carry conventional bombs and rockets (as well as fuel tanks and nukes) on the three fuselage stations, and I took a cue from the RF-101C and its wing mounted ECM pod pylons and added some underwing stations for ECM pods, IRM's, and rocket pods. Basically, I'm creating a tactical fighter version with emphasis on the conventional ground attack capability versus the primarily nuclear mission of the F-101A and F-101C. Anyways, I've been able to do everything, but figure out how to get the underwing pylons from the RF-101C to show up. The weapons appear, but there is an empty gap where the pylon is.

Obviously it had to do with the 3D model of the pylon itself. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get these pylons to appear?

i think the pylons of the RF-101C are in the aircraft model itself so that's why they don't show up on other planes.

but i'm not an aircraft modder so i can't help you.

Oh so I'm guessing if that's the case than I won't be able to get them onto my fictitious version. My modding abilities only go up to a certain level so I'm pretty sure that would be above my level. Never hurts to try something new though. :)

Well, the pylons could be built and added via the pilot method without needing to alter the original LOD file. But you'd have to get someone to build the pylons for you.

McDonnell built the F-101D, they just named it the Phantom :)

The F-4 Phantom was a blend of the lessons learned from the F3H Demon and F-101 Voodoo.

Putting J79s in F-101s made as much sense as putting PW1120s in F-4s: much better performance, but still not as good as the next generation that was built to use that class of engine.

No amount of thrust would overcome the structural and aerodynamic limitations of the base airframes.

Of course, I would have loved to see both of those aircraft modernized to the full extent possible.

F-101s with J-79s and APQ-120 radars would simply have been F-4s with less maneuverability, but possibly faster!

F-4s would have really gained in the areas of climb, acceleration, and range using PW1120 turbofans, though top speed probably would have suffered a bit going from turbojet to turbofan.

Turn performance would have been improved some, but was largely airframe limited (max load).

Anyone ever seen any numbers for F-101 performance with J-79's? Wasn't an NF-101A fitted with them?
