Killing of a "Brisfit"

Today, I killed my first Bristol Fighter, and I remembered again, why I don't attack

them usually. Although I downed the craft in the end, I had to make an emergency

landing myself after that - the gunner had shot up my engine.

Anyone else flying German side ever attacked one of them? How did it go?

Whenever i piss off stump in multiplayer,,,he (and rooster is another one), switch to the bristol..

 

I know its always suicide, but i go after them anyways....i think the score is somewhere around stump 215 duck 4.

 

What has always amazed me (something that may have been resolved in the latest patchs) was its ability to pick me off at ranges well over 1200 ft.

 

Have yet to find a blind spot for that rear gunner.

They are quite agile for such a big bird. Have you tried shooting at them from underneath? I haven’t tried it with them, may not be possible if they maneuver too much. If they fly level then get some speed up then get directly under and point your nose at their belly. Works for me on other 2 seaters. Sometimes.

My tactics involve trying to barrel-roll into some firing position in order to sty ahead of the rear gunners pitch and yaw angle rate, then just keep on jinking and getting snap shots in, hopefully one will hit and be critical. Then I get shot down... pretty consistently. If there are blind spots, I haven't found them.

 

In reality, if the Brisfit were making tight high(er) G turns, then the rear gunner wouldn't be able to move the gun to get a firing solution on you. However, I've heard some people say that WWI AC couldn't turn to generate those kind of g's, but according to McCudden's autobiography he witnessed this very phenomena happening where the rear gunner was helpless as the pilot made violent defensive maneuvers.

The Brisfit is a tough opponent. I've shot down only 3 of them, all with my Pfalz D.IIIa pilot. The usual attack approach (below the observer's field of fire) against two seaters is much harder to do when facing Brisfits, because they are so fast that they can easily outrun the pursuer. I managed to shoot down those Brisfits by making quick diving attacks when they were flying below me. The rear gunners didn't have much time to shoot at my plane, but even then I was always damaged by their fire. Usually I tend to stay away from the Brisfits, because even if you do shoot one of them down, there's a big risk of getting your engine damaged in the middle of a fight. Before the patch changed the observer gun accuracy, Brisfits were absolutely deadly opponents. Now they are just extremely dangerous.

Underneath/belly attack won't work - they see you coming and begin to turn like crazy.

But I'm good at long range deflection shooting, and so I damaged her from a range of 450 - 350 feet.

Then she was a little less agile.

Now I approached her zig zag, firing into the area from rear gunner to engine mainly. But I got too close

once - and got hit. Engine going "click-clack". I finished her - she brought me down too.

No good everyday practise.

I always aim for the pilot and observer when making diving attacks against Brisfits with my Pfalz. It helps a lot that the Pfalz must be one of the most stable gun platforms in OFF. Hard to imagine doing any sharpshooting in a Dr.I!

Yes, absolutely. With a Pfalz, you could best practise long range and deflection shooting.

That's what I did with her in Phase 2.

Also, she is tough enough to get as close as must be for killing shots.

 

Duck, Jammer and Bandy - a blind spot does only exist in theory, as she constantly turns like hell.

She is a two set fighter, and I really mean "fighter". Saw two of them chasing Albatros around.

If the pilots works good with the gunner, they are a devil's team, with no blind spot, no dead angle.

And then, they are even thre, four or five.

With a good kill tally on a DiD campaign pilot, I would NOT attack them, if not absolutely necessary.
