OvS 8 Posted June 1, 2009 The Rag Wing Derby Story Enjoy, WF2 I'll bet that the competition got a tougher as the 'month' went on.... aw jeez... I'm sorry, I couldn't resist!! ;) Great little movie, watch the clip. See, those were the BEST days of aviation. Them and shortly after WWII when we were experimenting with the sound barrier and space! Now it's just a bus route from A to B. :( OvS
Rooster89 0 Posted June 2, 2009 (edited) I've got money on Ruth Elder. Even if she loses she's still a fox. Edit: well was -Rooster Edited June 2, 2009 by Rooster89
Canvas Wings 1 Posted June 2, 2009 Great stuff, thanks, WF2 - the Women's race of '29 is a fantastic story. They were some incredible women who, in addition to the perils of flying in the first place, had to take the flack of bucking the system to do it. When you consider Thaden, who won the race, very nearly crashed/died enroute to the race in the first place and that Marvel Crosson was killed during the race itself... and add in the fact that two other competitors died in air crashes within the next 18 months. (Not too mention Amelia Earhart 8 years later) you get an idea of just how dangerous flight still was, some 10 years after the time we sim in OFF. I hope they do a good job on the documentary; it's a tale. It's a wonder Hollywood didn't pick it up years ago. There's' so much drama, intrigue and courage in it, they wouldn't have even had to embellish it. (They would have, of course.) CW
Ras 0 Posted June 2, 2009 I believe this is when Marvel Crosson lost her life during the race in an crash. Her brother, Joe, one my idols along with Noel Wien of Alaska bush pilot history are my favorites in aviation history, those days, those times. WOW
