mission editior question

Hi, I want to edit some new missions by myself, I have heard about some thing called mission editior, is it the thing that i can use to make a new mission. or whether there is other ways. I know building a mission is a long story, but are there some kind one can tell me some information about that, or give a link where I can get plentiful knowledge. Thank you very much.
