Reporting System problems

Last Friday evening, 11 Sept, when the OFF Forums were down, I did not know the correct procedure of how or to whom to report the problem. I first I sent PM's to my forums MODs, then I found this forum and link. As a CMSgt with 25 years of active duty, I learned to make SOPs "dummy prof" for my personel. Mabe you could include an active link on the home page somewhere that says "To report system problems click here", so the individuals who can effect the fix will be notified ASAP. The OFF Fourm was down over one hour before I was able to report it properly, only due to lack of knowledge.

That's a tough one ...

 

So you don't think just having this bug/suggestion forum is enough? I really hesitate peppering the site with links for site issues which might suggest that what's taken place over the last week (read: forum software upgrade) happens all the time and more importantly would happen when I'm not here. Generally I make the changes and updates and check to make sure things are working and move on. Sometimes I miss some stuff which is what happened with the OFF Forums and oh by the way it wasn't just OFF it was a global issue I just never drilled down far enough to see it, my apologies. I'd like to say that once the software is up and running we clip along at a fine pace. The last major overhaul like this happened two years ago but we ran smooth after the upgrade. Mind you there are still things to do and I'm working as fast and as "top down important" as possible, and I'm confident we're going to end up with a rock solid configuration with nothing left half-baked or undone.

 

To answer your question about where stuff like the OFF forums being down should be reported. Right here in the bug/suggestion forum, that's what it's for. Now if the OFF guys need to develop an SOP for their specific section that would be totally up to them on how best to facilitate a SOP.

 

Hope that helps and thanks for the suggestion I'll keep it on my list and if something pops up that says "hey that's where this belongs" I'll get it implemented.

Eric,

I understand your reluctance to create a link, as I suggested. Dully noted. How about mentioning the SOP for reporting site issues on the membership page, when people join up. Yes, I think having the designated "Bug Forum" is adequate, as long as everyone is informed about it's location and use.

 

On a side note, if you folks are ever in need of additional MODS, I would be honored to volunteer my time to CombatAce.

It's in the General Forums section along with The Pub, News and General Aviation chat, clearly visible from the main forum index without even scrolling. What other ad does it need? :grin:

GR ... I think what Barnstorm is getting at specifically is directly related to the OFF Forums. For everyone else the main board index (what you spoke about) is what everyone sees when they get to the boards. For the OFF guys most of them have or use a link that opens just their specific forum on the boards. If you never ventured outside that forum you'd never know the rest of CA existed. That's why I referred the issue to the OFF Moderators as they maintain the attributes, posts, and direction of the group in the OFF Forum.

 

What I may do is start a help topic in the help section on how to report, where to report, what to report when things go wrong. This way anyone looking for help will have a link to the specific area to post problems concerning the site.
