+pcpilot 181 Posted April 16, 2004 These questions were asked on the Yahoo groups forum for Fighting Steel and Fighting Steel Project (FSP) and thought they might be good to post for anyone getting into, or back into, FS. First,... Been playing FSP (original) for several years on a Pentium 466 Windows98 2nd edition laptop w/8MB video, (also ran well on old 800MHz Windows98 2nd edition laptop w/16MB video) - love the game and have created every possible senario, (including pre-war US/UK Joint Naval Exercises). Here's my question - looking at purchasing version 9.5 on CDROM, (Italians and French need to get involved, not to mention all post 1942 USN CAs, CLs and DDs - you can never have enough DDs!) - is everything I'll need on it, (i.e. won't have to download files, extract, overwright, fiddle, troubleshoot, etc.) and what operating system will it work with, (upgraded PCs/laptops last fall - both XP pro, 2.6Ghz w/64M video, 512M RAM ,etc.). Can always get a used 800Mhz Dell w/32Mhz Video RAM for a couple hundred bucks but I'd just as soon load on my current desktop. I guess I'm looking for a simple install as well as stable operating functionality. PS. Had an idea about mine fields - just like adding Bombardment circle - only when ships enter area, AI determines if ships affected, (could use same code used for torps in determining hit rate). ------------------- Hello, Thanks for your questions and interest. First, let me be clear on a couple of your questions -- you can -always- download the current version of the Fighting Steel Project for free: the CD option is really for if you want to help fund work on the project with a donation, and/or do not want to download the seperate files that are on the CD. You will still have to have a copy of the original game installed before you update with FSP, as FSP will not install without the original game already installed (and at any rate is not a complete game by itself as it does not include all of the original game files...). The installer on the FSP donation CD, and the one you can download are (and will be) identical: the single installer will fully update your current Fighting Steel game to the new FSP version, no matter what version it is, and you do not have to uninstall/reinstall the game, nor do you need to run a catalog patch as in older FSP updates :-) The donation CD does include all of the updated scenarios, the FSP manual & the original game manual (both in PDF format), the FSP radar guide, the FSP ship-data excell chart, demos of several of NWS own games, as well as the latest version of Direct-X and Acrobat reader...it of course also contains the installer for the current FSP release, both the English and German-language versions. So yes, virtually everything to do with FSP is indeed on the CD. Most PCs produced in the past ~2 years should have few problems with FS or FSP -- of course, like with any complex software product, you can have hardware or software that does not 'play well' with the product: we do our utmost here to help those who do report such problems, as players on these forums can attest to. From your description, your machines should work fine with FSP, but if you do have any issues you know where to find help ;-) Mines: we are still not set on how we want to introduce these into the game. They are not -really- critical for WW2, but they certainly would be a needed item for any future FSP-WW1 game... Thanks, William Miller Assistant Director\ Projects Deeveloper NWS Next... Hello, I was wondering how close (FSP) V9.5 was to release. ------------ Hello, All of the added game features and changes are complete, and appear to work well in tests. All that remains is to add the new ship models and ship data that will be included in 9.5 -- we have a ship list that appears to be firming up, and modeling of the ships has started. I would estimate 8 - 14 days until the release at this point. Keep in mind that is an estimate, we want to make the release as bug-free and smooth as possible, so if it takes a few extra days to work out any last-minute kinks we will take that time, rather than release with the 'kink'. Thanks! William Miller Assistant Director\ Projects Developer NWS I asked this same question and this was the reply. Glad to hear its near release, only a few more weeks. This is going to be an AWESOME version to have of FSP so keep your eyes out for it. It you arent a member yet of Yahoo groups and these forums for FSP and the Fleet Command Naval Warfare Project (NWP), get signed up, its free. Theres a LOT of interesting things coming down the pike soon if you are a fan of either of these games.
