On the Asus site I've read this:

Stock settings for the 955BE :

Cpu Volt 1.35

CPU-NB 1.175

HTT 1.2

SB 1.26

NB 1.10

Cpu VDD 2.5

Does your BIOS have an "AUTO" setting for CPU multiplier? If so, select that for a start.

Looks like your MB has "EZ-Flash 2." This allows you to flash your BIOS by inserting a flash drive with the latest BIOS into a USB port. Look for instructions in your MB manual.

'Auto' is set already. MB has EZ-Flash. It looks EZ ennough. I am getting ready to try this soon. Thanks

On the Asus site I've read this:

I've been doing some reading to become more familiar with the terms used like HT ref clk etc. I ran AMD's Overclock program last night and somehow it adjusted CPU speeds slightly from 802 Mhz. to 820 Mhz. So I now have that CPU core speed showing on CPU-Z. As well AMD Overclock looks like it 'sees' the correct 'target' settings of 3200 Mhz and 16x multiplier for the cores. I just have to figure out how to apply those settings through the program. If the program won't or can't do that then I will try manually with the settings you've posted.

Today I tried everything, well almost everything because obviously I haven't tried the right thing. My system still won't run at 3200 Mhz. I changed all the AI tweaker settings on my BIOS. The 16x multiplier, the core speed setting to 3200 Mhz. , set the voltages as per Von Paulus's list and nothing works. Sometimes my settings caused the machine to not boot and I would go back and try again. I also tried AMD OverClocker. In that program I could set the voltages and multiplier and as soon as I pressed 'apply' the Overclocker program would move the settings back to my default 4x and 800 mhz. Very frustrating indeed. I think I will have to flash the BIOS.

Sorry not to have posted earlier, been feeling a little under the weather today...

My guess at this point is that your CPU is not supported by your MB without a BIOS update. Do you have the details on your CPU besides AMD 3.2 GHz? Example: name and/or serial number? I'm not familiar with the latest and greatest, but it might help someone else identify your problem.

Herr, I've already told, that the CPU support table for that board, acknowledges the existence of 4 different IIX4 955 CPU's.

And only one, the (HDZ955FBK4DGI), will work with the BIOS version he has on his board. Agree with you 12oclockhigh has no other chance than update.

Yes you've to update the BIOS, there is no workaround left as far as I know.

Of course, there's also the chance that the motherboard is defective.

So if after updating the BIOS the problem remains, you'll have to RMA the board.

There is a positive point in all this. I'm sure you've learn something with all this process.

I am hoping you are right as that is something in my control. This evening I am going to update the BIOS to see if that solves the problem. If it doesn't then I guess I am heading back to the shop to get the mobo and CPU checked out.

Perhaps I've learned that 'ignorance is bliss' as I was sailing along happily with this system as is until I found this out. I am joking of course. It has been and continues to be a learning experience.

Eheheh. That's true. The ignorants seem to be blessed. You know what we get when we eat the apple.

But be positive. There's still a good chance that your problem will be solved with the update.

Ignorance may be bliss, but it also leaves us at the mercy of others. And the costs too, if they happen to be a bit crooked in their ways. grin.gif

Hello all. Today I updated my BIOS to the latest version. Unfortunately the results are still the same. Tomorrow I will phone the computer store and make arrangements to bring my machine in for service. Also I know that this thread drifted away from OFF and BHaH General Help. I hope that has not upset anyone. It was not my intention at the start. I very much want to thank all the people who posted here with helpful suggestions and encouragement.

Sorry to hear that.

I still would like to hear further developments. If you don't mind, please PM me and keep me informed.

Yes, do keep us posted. Someone may come along with the same or similar issue, and if the info is already here, it can be very helpful.

OK now, the computer shop tells me there is nothing wrong with my system. CPU-Z reads 800 mh. per core x4 and that's 3200 mhz. according to them. When I told them about CPU-Z screen shots showing 3200 with a x16 multiplier they suggested CPU-Z was not reading correctly and I should try another program. If anyone out there has a AMD quad II 955BE and can supply me with a screen shot using CPU-Z I'd appreciate it.

I suppose that the guys at this site didn't invent those screenshots.

Read carefully the text on that page.

These are stock values.

amdphenom955stock.jpg

Below shows the values when AMD Cool and Quiet is enabled, which are basically the same you've.

amdphenom955idle.jpg

My Intel Core2Duo processor is an E8500 which runs at 3.17.

It means each core is running 3.17 at stock without green functions activated.

The same applies to AMD as far as I know.

Two things: Or those guys at the computer shop are completely ignorant or they are deliberating cheating you.

Unfortunately I've no AMD experience. I've a computer shop but I don't sell AMDs. Only Intel.

PM redwolf he as an almost similar CPU as yours.

EDIT: If what they told you was the truth than those guys at that site were performing a technical miracle with the first screenshot. They were overclocking 4x times. :yikes:

Look at this forum.

They are stating one thing. To be sure that's nothing is wrong you've to run a program to stress your cpu while cpu-z is active.

Try Orthos.

If the values doesn't change than it means something is wrong. If the values do change than you've green functions activated or a BIOS update is need (which you've already performed).

Either way, those guys at your computer shop aren't telling the truth.

EDIT: By the way CPU-z is accepted everywhere as a reliable program.

Are the guys at that shop ex-automechanics? That sounds like some of the lame answers they would give to people.

I agree with vonP and ConradB. Do NOT go back to that computer shop. Find another one with experience working with AMD products.

Something else strikes me as odd. Isn't Cool n Quiet a technology that was used for Athlon 32's and 64's? I don't think the Phenoms use Cool n Quiet. I went to the AMD website, and although they had Cool n Quiet drivers for Athlon 32's and 64's, there was nothing for Phenoms.

Here's another trick you might try. Go to Control Panel and click on Power Options. Click the Power Schemes tab and make sure that minimal power management has not been selected. Choose Home/Office computer instead.

Godspeed.

Yeah, I'm in agreement with the latest posts. I didn't feel these tech people are professional at all. I only took my machine back there because it's where I purchased the components originally. After talking with them yesterday evening on the phone and basically being told the problem was I had downloaded the wrong version of CPU-Z I went right over and I picked my machine. All the service guys had left and there was no paperwork or diagnostic report showing their side of the story. I'd paid $50.00 cdn. too for this 'service'. I'm talking with them this morning to get a refund.

12'oclock--

Look at this link (thanks von P): http://www.amd.com/us/Documents/Cool_N_Quiet_Installation_Guide3.pdf

Everything I read there seems to indicate Cool n Quiet is still enabled on your setup. For example, "If the displayed clock frequency is approximately 800 MHz, Cool ‘n’ Quiet is enabled and functioning correctly."

Try one of the recommended solutions to disable CnQ.

What is your new BIOS number? I noticed at www.asus.com that their latest driver for your MB is #2304, dated 12/11/2009. Latest version of Cool n Quiet is 2.18.1.

I'm also downloading your MB manual and will have a look at it later tonight.

It's easy to know if AMD Cool n Quiet or any other green function is activate or not. Just use a stress program while you're with cpu-z open and see if the clock rises or not. If it rises than definitely there's a green function on. If it doesn't than the motherboard has a problem. If the clock rises with the stress program that doesn't mean that it also rises with OFF. But if it doesn't rise with orthos or prime95 than you'll need to RMA the board.

12oclock, you can always try to contact Asus and ask for a RMA for that motherboard. You don't need the computer shop, as far as I know, to ask for a RMA. But first be sure to fundament your request at Asus.

Yes I know Herr, that it seems there is a green function on. But I couldn't find anything more besides AMD Cool n Quiet and C1 setting in the manual. But maybe you find something that I didn't. Better two heads thinking than just one. Thanks.
