Is there a way to use the LOD5 from another aircraft?

Recommended Posts

I'm working with SF2 and some old WW2 visual models. They don't have any LODs.

When you get a lot of them on the screen your frame rates go way down. I want the aircraft to be seen far away.

Is there away to adapt a low poly LOD from another aircraft to use with the older visual model? I have the additional LOD section in the INI and the lod in the aircraft's folder. Names are all lower case. But it doesn't show. I see empty sky (the ultimate in low poly grin.gif ) with smoke trails, but no visual model.

Ultimately a square block would be a perfect lod for what I'm trying to do since I really just want to show a dot way out there, which also ought to improve framerates in a large furball.

Gregory,

Did you rename the .lods to match the "host" aircraft?

Actually, you normally can't do what you are asking. The reason is that all LODs must conform to the same internal mesh heirarchy. That is to say, if you think of the heirarchy as a tree, with the fuselage as the 'trunk' then wings and tail as the 'main branches' then ailerons, rudders, etc as 'smaller branches', etc. All models listed in the basic ini must conform to that heirarchy, including the same names. You can cut branches from the tips inward and not cause problems for the farther away LODs...but if any LOD violates the heirarchy, NONE of the LODs will show. That's what you are encountering I suspect.

The LODs didn't have to match the host aircraft, I just wanted a low poly blob for the far view to help improve frame rates.

I even tried making a copy of the original lod and renaming it with a _lod2 and still it didn't show. Is there a standard naming structure used in the heirarchy so you could create a box with just a fuselage (all branches trimmed) that could be used? A one size fits all?

No, the sim doesn't have a standard naming scheme as far as I can tell (I used a custom one for the Super Hornets). Are you saying it didn't show up at all? Or didn't show up far away...wondering because each LOD is assigned a visual distance number.

The near visual showed up fine. The copy of the visual, set to a greater distance did not. Two smoke trails was all you saw and the engine sound stopped.
