ConradB 0 Posted February 11, 2010 OvS, that is a beautiful picture. Always great to be in the right place at the right time, AND with a camera! Ok, I'm an expat Canadian and lived there into my early 30's (both Northern Ontario and S. Ontario) and I never experienced the concentrated winter weather like we just had in the D.C. area. The U.S. Federal Gov'm has been shut down ALL week, at a loss of 100 million dollars a day. That ain't pocket change... I live in a small townhouse community, and there just isn't any more room to put the white stuff. The snowbank along my parking spots is 8+ feet high, mostly from human effort (yours truly, I'm downing ibuprophen like candy for my shoulder issues!) but other people are shoveling it into the street, basically adding insult to injury, and passing the problem onto their neighbours when the plow comes by, whenever that will be.... The side streets are basically impassible. Now that things are melting we have icicles of Gothic proportions! That one you see below (to the left of the second story window with black shutters) is at least 8 feet long, the camera angle doesn't do it justice... With those icicles, now would be a time to invite those you dislike over for a visit. The impliment melts, and there's no evidence.
Bullethead 12 Posted February 11, 2010 I was thinking they should run the Snowboarding Half-Pipe straight off the side of the Jefferson Monument... and maybe do the Downhill on the front lawn of the White House? Sound OK? It might work. Lost in all this complaining about how bad the snow is in DC, is this 1 very important piece of good news: Congress is no longer in session. That means your life, liberty, and money are safe for the time being
Bullethead 12 Posted February 12, 2010 Well, it actually snowed again in Lousy Anna's armpit. And it snowed HARD, and for a long time. It's still snowing now, in fact, but just barely. This was a strange storm. Yesterday, it got up to 39^F for most of the day with a constant drizzle mixed with sleet. Then about midnight last night, it started raining hard with sleet mixed in, eventually turning to freezing rain. All this put 1" of water on the ground. Then it started snowing about 0500 and it's expected to keep snowing until 1200 (1/2 hour from now). The temperature never got below 33^F at ground level, and the ground was covered with all this warmer water, so the snow was melting pretty fast. However, it was snowing so hard that it still accumulated up to about 2" at its maximum extent, which happened about 0800. Since then, it's warmed up a bit more, so the stuff is now melting faster than it's piling up and the ground is becoming visible again. Had it been colder on the ground, I bet we'd have accumulated 4-5". That would have been a personal record for me at this location. My sister lives in Dallas where it's been colder and this same storm gave her 12" of snow yesterday afternoon, a record for that area. Anyway, nothing anywhere near what the yankees are getting, but when put against the local norms, it's rather impressive. Plus, it's the 2nd time it's snowed this winter, where even once is a rarity.
