This is the only Vid that I ever saw a DH 5 Flying.

Well, the tank was offset from the center quite a bit.

And as the pilot isn't sitting behind the wing, where he could be reached by the burning fuel,

but underneath the wing, he would be in little danger to get spilled over with the petrol.

Another good reason to love the Albatros - the tank is behind you. Imagine to have the tank in front of you, and it catches fire.

But then - if it catches fire at all, forth or back - it may be your end anyway, without that chute.

I think most British a/c had the gas tanks over their heads, in front or in between the pilot and Observer. I cant remember which a/c I saw ( English) that it had a gas leek and you could see the gas pouring out on the Pilots Knee. ( The aircraft was flying from Rinebeck Airdrome and the Vid was a U Tube. Camel , Pup or Avro 504 ? MMMMMMMMMMM Warm Kumpets

The SPADs had aux fuel tanks in the wing over the cockpit. Also, the Albatros fuel tanks were in front of the cockpit, and there was no firewall.

They actually flew? You mean that wasn't some figment of my wishful thinking in OFF?

 

DH2 and DH5 had the same wing, motor, and approximately the same weight, so you'd expect similar performance. Your vid seemed to show that. What I thought most interesting was how, when seen in silouhette, the back-stagger of the DH5 could confuse you so easily as to which way it was really going.
