The numbers are just not where the NHLPA thinks they are. Unfortunately, it seems that unless the NHLPA changes it's definition of terms (in particularly how THEY define 'salary cap') there will be no more hockey. The league tendered 6 proposals, the NHLPA none. 20 of the 30 franchises lost money last season. The owners and board of directors voted, begrudgingly, to not have a season until the economic system the league operates under gets revamped into a 21st century model. With continued bancruptcy and other problems, they just do not want to continue in that economic environment.

 

It comes down to a lock out. :(

A Lock Out, the rumours I heard about it are thru. No NHL Icehockey in the beginseason. The players are getting millions for their work. But I heard that icehockey is going down in popularity what about the four American sports at television and marketing (the four are: baseball, basketball, American Football and icehockey).

Maybe is it a good idea for the NHL players to play in Europe (specially in the Netherlands :D ). Make your European fans happy and come here.

And when NHL start they can back to play.

For as long as I have been around (and paying attention) sports has always been about money. Not how well one performs on or off the field. More often than not, a young player will bust his nuts trying to get noticed, score a huge contract, then get washed back with the tide into a sea of players that show up for work, do what they have to, and then go home to spend their money. If you've read this far, I'm sure one or two players from your favorite sport have already come to mind.

 

Seems like the NHL has had enough of it and decided to set an example for all others sports organizations to follow.

 

Here's the 2 issues that I see them struggling with:

• Owners want salary cap, players do not
  
• Players agree to a 5% salary rollback, owners want 25%
  

Those are huge issues. I don't see it being resolved (by the players) anytime soon, so I predict that the Owners will (once again) have to "take one for the team" to bring the NHL back into existence. Unfortunately, lost revenue and employment from television, radio, arena and nearby restaurants and nightlife, and tourism in general will force the hand.
