Ash from Mt Tongariro has caused road closures in the central North Island.

Mt Tongariro erupted at about 11.50 last night, sending ash into the air.

Police Inspector Ian Harris says while there are no reports of injuries or damage so far there's a significant ash cloud which is moving in an easterly to north easterly direction.

"As far across as State Highway 5, the Napier-Taupo road at Te Haroto there, and also light falls reported across in Napier."

Road closures:

Due to possible danger to the public Police have closed SH1 between Rangipo and Waiouru (Desert Road) and SH46 West of Rangipo. SH47 and 4 remain open at his stage as does SH5.

Motorists are being advised to avoid travel in the area and these closures will be re-assessed once daylight reveals the extent of the ash cloud and other related safety risks have been assessed.

Mr Dtmdragron is closer. The last big eruption the ash came our way and turned day into night in minutes. The ash covers everything too.
