The MiG-21 is one of the symbols of Cold War aviation history and is also the most-produced supersonic jet aircraft in history. The development of what would eventually become the MiG-21 began in the early 1950s, when the Mikoyan design bureau completed a preliminary study for a prototype designated “Ye-1” in 1954. This prototype was quickly redesigned after engineers realized that its engine was underpowered for its intended role as a supersonic fighter. The redesigned aircraft was designated “Ye-2.” Both prototypes featured swept wings, a clear difference from the delta-wing design we know today. The first prototype to feature the famous delta wing was the “Ye-4.” The Ye-4 made its first flight in 1955, and its public appearance came during an airshow held at Moscow’s Tushino airfield in 1956. The MiG-21 as we know it today entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1959 as the MiG-21F, becoming one of the first successful Soviet aircraft to combine the fighter and interceptor roles. It was lightweight, capable of reaching Mach 2.0, and highly agile and maneuverable. Like many aircraft designed with interception in mind, the MiG-21 had relatively limited range. This was partly caused by the placement and capacity of its fuel tanks, which limited its endurance. Early variants could have very short endurance during demanding flight conditions, particularly when carrying little or no external fuel. These limitations would lead to the development of later variants with increased internal fuel capacity and provisions for external fuel tanks. The MiG-21 was exported extensively and became one of the most widely operated military aircraft in history. Since its introduction, approximately 60 countries have operated some variant of the MiG-21, and several countries continue to operate the aircraft today.
