America's Ace of Aces 3.0 Video Enhanced
Hairog replied to Hairog's topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: File Announcements
A work of love. It just kind of bugged me that for the most part Richard Ira Bong has been forgotten. I drive past that sign (Bong Recreation Area) probably once a month and I've see many a person stopping and taking pictures of it. It's a joke to them and they have no idea about the history behind it. I want to collect peoples video tracks of them flying the missions to present to the historical center that honors Bong. Maybe they can use it to educate folks. -
File Name: America's Ace of Ace's Richard Bong 40 kills with a P38 Lightning File Submitter: Hairog File Submitted: 11 Feb 2009 File Category: IL2 Series Campaigns & Missions Can you match the exploits of America's Ace of Aces? I have portray as accurately as possible the circumstances faced by Dick Bong in his 2 year onslaught of the Japanese armed forces in the Pacific. All of Bong's successful missions have been recreated. America's Ace of Aces Richard Ira Bong Just over the Wisconsin border from Illinois is the most stolen sign in America. It reads "Bong Recreation Area". 99% of the people you ask will have no idea who or what the area is named after. It's a shame that the greatest fighter pilot America has ever produced is all but forgotten and his name has become a joke. This is just my attempt to educate a small number of you as to the life and times of Richard Ira Bong, America's Ace of Aces. His record 40 kills will never be surpassed. This unlikely farm boy from tiny Poplar Wisconsin became a super star and then faded into the history books. He deserves more than 15 min of fame. I have recreated all of Bong's successful missions. If you equal or surpass Bong's record with all the realism options turned on without do overs and without using the auto pilot you have accomplished a major feat and should be proud of your simulated flying skill. I have tried to portray as accurately as possible the circumstances faced by Dick Bong in his 2 year onslaught of the Japanese armed forces. I have had to use different maps because many of the areas that Bong fought in are not represented in the game yet. Areas such as Northern New Guinea, Rabal, Borneo, the Philippine Islands of Negros, Mindoro and Leyte have not been modeled yet. I have found very similar areas on other maps that fit the bill however. By using the southern part of New Guinea I was able to recreate the Lae area farther to the north; by using the Singapore map I could recreate similar conditions to the Philippine islands etc. I think you will get the feel of the historical area and conditions. The folder BongCampaign goes in the US folder that is in the Campaign folder that is in the mission folder. The folder BongSingle goes in the US folder that is in the Single folder that is in the mission folder. The P38J, P38L and P38L_Late folders go in the skins folder that is in the PaintSchemes folder. This campaign is complex and requires a powerfull computer and video card. It was done with IL2FB+PF Combined Install version 4.04. Mission Bong29 (Rivals Together) is very complex. You might want to try out your computer on this one first if you plan on doing the campaign. I was having fun trying to make a realistic invasion scene and it got out of hand. Feel free to tone it down if you know how. Much of what is going on is not relevant to your mission as a pilot. Just invasion craft, bunkers, BB and CAs shelling each other etc. It's a hoot. Look around using the Cnt F2 command as I have placed some fixed cameras. Three books were instrumental in providing the historical facts for this endeavor... Ace of Aces, The Dick Bong Story - Written by Carl Bong and Mike O'connor Dear Mom So We Have A War by Carl Bong Dick Bong Ace of Aces by Gen. George Kenney I had unique access to these books being from Wisconsin. There are many quotes directly from Dick's letters home to his mother. They provide an extrodinary window as to the thoughts and concerns of a farm boy a long way from the farm but making the best of it. Carl Bong is Dick Bong's brother and Gen. Kenney was Dick's commanding officer. I have copied major parts of the "descriptions" from these books. I am not a writer but I do know how to copy well. The first mission is from the Kokoda Campaign for Pacific Fighters by VBF_80 and the skins are all modifications of other people's painstaking work the most notable being "Marge" by Richard Mutt or RMutt. I couldn't have done this project without the jump start these artists provided. I wish to apologize for the racial epithets used to describe the Japanese race. This was the language of the times and the quotes are verbatim. I'm sorry if they cause any discomfort. I do not mean to offend, just to be historically accurate with my quotes. Because of the 3 books mentioned I believe these missions to be very accurate, sans the proper maps of course. The conditions, land forms, forces encountered are as historically correct as can be created. Any additions or corrections would be appreciated. There are a few fun missions. One where you take off at night and try and get Washing Machine Charlie as Bong tried to do a few times... Another where you get into a dogfight in a SBD against a float plane... One where you have a mock dog fight with a P47 as Bong did while on leave... and the last one where you try and complete the only mission that Dick Bong could not. Feel free to add a video or awards etc. I have no idea as to how to go about doing that. Add all you want but please dont change the basic facts of the missions. The research is pretty good. If you do put the plane on autopilot, you will encounter all the bogies that Dick Bong shot down. P.S. Oh yeah, by the way, did you know who Bong was before you read this? This is America's Ace of Aces 3.0 I promise that the video tracks will work now. A huge thank you to WheelsUp_cavu. I had screwed up the videos so royaly that they didn't play and he took the time to set things straight. Thank you Wheels! It's time to fly the Lighting again. This is version 3.0 of America's Ace of Aces enhanced with video tracks. Hopefully the videos add to the historical feel and accuracy of this campaign following in the footsteps of America's greatest pilot and greatest plane. I promise you that this one will work. Wheelsup has been so kind as to trouble shoot my flawed earlier attempts and has made it flyable and the video tracks will play I promise. So jump into the cockpit of America's best fighter and strap in and see if you can match or beat Richard Ira Bong's 40 victories. I had rare access to Bong's flight log and I believe that these missions are as close as you can come to the real thing. If Bong's log said that he was jumped by 3 Oscars from 7 o'clock high you will be jumped by 3 Oscars from 7 o'clock high. http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=3868 -

Hairog posted a topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: Mods & Skinning Chat
Richard Bong was flying a borrowed plane a P-38J "Down Beat" when he broke Rickenbackers record of 26 to become America's Ace of Aces. I need that skin to be able to complete my campaign. I know I had it at one time but it seems to have disappeared from my HD. I've searched the whole world over and can't find it. Can someone assist me please. It would be a same no to have that for my historical campaign. Thank you in advance. -

How do you end WWIII?
Hairog posted a topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: General Discussion
The storyline for my WWIII 1946 campaign has reached a point where the NATO Allies have used there vast invasion forces to isolate the Soviet Forces in Southern France, Northern Europe and the Mideast. By amphibious invasions of Trieste, Murmansk, Riga and Novorossiysk (Black Sea)and a strategic bombing campaign they have left the vast majority of the Red Army on foot and starving far from home. They are poised to take Kursk, Belgorod, Smolensk and Stalingrad in early September, 1947. The US has 7 Fat Boy and Little Man Nukes available for use. Stalin has declared that the WWIII will be won at Stalingrad. My inclination is to nuke Stalingrad and have Stalin assassinated and everyone go home after the appropriate changes in the Soviet government are made ala Germany and Japan. I would like your suggestions as to how to end this story. -

Chapter 2 The Soft Underbelly September 7th, 1946 Crimea Map 5 missions As envisioned in Plan Griddle the NATO bomber force is relocated to Egypt. On this day the first high level bombing mission occurs. The target is the oil production facilities surrounding Sevastopol. The plan is to obliterate by day and night the Soviet Unions ability to produce oil. 70% of the USSR oil supply and refining capacity are located within range of the new B29 bases in Egypt and new long range fighter bases in Turkey, Rhodes and Cyprus. The strategic air war begins. The first attack is a daylight raid by B29s escorted by YP80 and ME262s. That same night a raid by B17s escorted by P51s and 109Z twin 109 long range fighter. The Soviets are caught off guard but respond quickly with a motley collection of B-6 and ME 163 rocket propelled interceptors, Yak 9Us and La-7s. Enough HE Lerche are scrapped together and along with their wire guided missiles start to prove devastating to the attacking bombers. The attacks continue day and night. Oct. 15th, 1946 Sevastopol disappears under an atomic mushroom cloud delivered by a B29. Oct. 16th, 1946 Kuban map 5 missions The strategic bombing campaign switches to the Kuban area. Nov. 20th, 1946 Besberobia map 5 missions The strategic bombing campaign switches to the Odessa area. Nov. 26th, 1946 Online map 11a (Turkey) online Italy (Island of Cyprus) Guadalcanal (Rhodes) 5 missions Soviets counter attack the forward fighter bases in Turkey, Rhodes and Cyprus. -
I've been obsessing about doing a massive campaign involving almost every stock 4.09 map and lots of jets to recreate a 1946 "what if" on a Soviet invasion. I've got it all mapped out and thought out. I need to know would it be better to try using my tried and true method of doing individual missions using the FMB and linking them or try and learning Lowengrin's DCG. I have no idea what can be done in DCG or even a vague notion of how it does its magic. Can someone give me a quick idea of what DCG does and can it be used to link different maps together in one big campaign? Is it easier to use DCG for my purpose than to painstakingly place everything in LMB? Can I incorporate a map that has never been used in a DCG campaign? Can you start a DCG campaign from scratch? Is there a tutorial anywhere (I can't find it if there is)? I appreciate any assistance and I'll fill you in later with more on my ideas about a huge jet campaign based on Plan Griddle. The plan to counter a Soviet invasion in 1946-48. I am planning to use all these maps and a few more.

Sorry I lost track of this post. Chapter One May 6th, 1946 West Berlin falls May 11th, 1946 Online Map 2 represents West Germany Two missions The Soviets onslaught continues with the newly formed NATO Alliance barley able to catch it's breath. 2 missions of trying to stop and protect fleeing NATO forces. May 19th, 1946 Two missions Online map 1 represents an area near the Belgium and German border. Resistance starts to stiffen and the Soviets receive a bloody nose. May 24th, 1946 Ardennes Map Three missions The French make an all out heroic stand and halt the Soviet forces for a few days. The Soviets halt and regroup before pushing on. June 6th NW Europe map Four missions The NATO strength starts to gather and newer equipment starts to show up on the battle field. The Soviet forces are actually held in check at a few crucial bridgeheads. Paris falls but the French fight on along with their NATO allies. June 12 Normandy map 5 missions The navy joins the fight and stops the Red Army at the shoreline using massive firepower from battleships and an air superiority battle breaks out over who will control the French coastline. A massive attempt by Soviet forces to destroy the NATO naval power preventing their ground forces from advancing are launched. The naval forces launch counter attacks on the Soviet airbases and ground forces. July 9th Online Map 4 represents the Spain/French border, The Pyrenees Line 8 missions According to Plan Griddle envisioned by the Joint Chiefs of Staff ... this is the last line of resistance. The retreat is over and they shall not pass. The Soviet forces slam into the Pyrenees Line and try to hammer their way through. Both sides pull out all the stops and use all their collective wonder weapons in an attempt to bring defeat to their opponent. Nothing is held back and anything that can fly, roll or crawl is put into the fight. The two heavy weights go toe to toe with no quarter given. Hay makers are thrown and damage is taken but there is no knock out blow. August 7th, 1946 A breakthrough had occurred in atomic weapons technology by NATO scientists and the W-9 Artillery shell program is modified towards making a 1000 lb 15KT bomb. 4 of these bombs are produced at great expense. This bomb has the same destructive ability as "Fat Man" but 1/8th the size. At the same time Naval aviation designers are modifying the GO 229 with the capability of being launched from an aircraft carrier and have the capability of delivering the new W-9 atomic bomb. British MI-6 urges a desperate plan and NATO comes in through the back door of the Baltic and launches 2 GO 229s from the CV 10 USS Yorktown carrying modified W-9 atomic warheads. Minsk and Kronor no longer exist. Both are key supply and rail hubs. As invisioned by MI-6, three Soviet armies are caught in transit. 2100 tanks and 250,000 men women and children are incinerated by two GO 229 stealth bombers sneaking in under the radar and two 15KT W-9 atomic warheads. The first major Soviet offensive is halted and both sides dig in. -

How do you end WWIII?
Hairog replied to Hairog's topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: General Discussion
World War Three 1946 Readme Storyline for 1946 WWIII Introduction January 23, 1946 Stalin's former allies have demobilized entire armies and have sent many of their armed forces home. The US and England have a fraction of their former forces stationed on the European mainland and have shown no backbone in resisting Soviet incursions. The only thing holding Stalin back from his vision of a communist Europe dominated by the USSR is the fear of the American nuclear bomb. He has seen the devastation it has brought to the Empire of Japan. Although he has no doubt that his armed forces can storm through the blasted hulk of the former Germany and France he is held in check by the fear of nuclear destruction from the skies. To intimidate Stalin further the US has based a squadron of B29 Super Fortresses in West Germany. The B29 is an offensive weapon not a defensive weapon. It is a first strike weapon. This only fuels Stalin's paranoia. In addition his former allies are gathering far too many of the German scientists and their wonder weapons and stealing them away to work on even more destructive weapons and delivery systems. Comrade Stalin needs to create a buffer so that the motherland is never subject to attack again. His vision is that all future wars will be fought in the no mans land that is the former Nazi homeland and he is convinced that there will be more wars despite the American atomic bomb. It's all a matter of where and when these wars will be fought because Capitalism and Communism cannot occupy the same space. Some say the second atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki was a demonstration for Stalin's benefit and to reinforce the power of the atom bomb in his mind. In addition it was to demonstrate that America has not only one but many bombs and is ready to use them. The plan has worked until today. Today Stalin receives word through his spy master and massive network of agents that American has a total of only 6 nuclear bombs. Previously he believed that they had many more and this fear is the only thing that kept his paranoia and ambitions in check. With this news the plan for the domination of Western Europe begins. No longer will the West be allowed to dictate it's will on the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and Stalin. He will once and for all remove the threat to Mother Russia. No longer will there be a gun pointed at his head from West Germany. A massive and very well concealed mobilization begins. As a Major in the USAAF you have flown over 100 combat missions in both Europe and the Mediterranean. Because of your special status your official victory score is top secret due to the nature of you assignments. You have been assigned to a special unit that is working on former German Wonder Weapons that are in our possession. Your specific assignment is to assess the combat capabilities of the various weapons platforms. As such you will be helping to design and test in any future combat situations, America's newest weapons systems. Installation: 1. Find your folder with your IL2-1946.exe in it. There should be a folder that is titled Missions. Inside that folder is the Campaign Folder. Open that folder and find the US Folder. Open that folder. Copy the WWIII1946Fighter Folder into that folder/subdirectory. 2. The WWIIISkins folder contains skins that you might want to use to make the campaign more pleasing to the eye and more immersive. If you don't use the skins your Soviet planes will have no markings. Your campaign will run just fine but won't look as realistic. The Skins folder is in the PaintSchemes Folder which is in the main IL2-1946 main folder. The skins all start with WWIII and then the plane model. Unfortunately there are some changes I had to make so... WWIIIYP80 goes in the P-80a folder WWIIIP3 goes in the Pe-3 Bis folder WWIIIP2 goes in the Pe-2 Series 359 folder WWIIIAR234 Goes in the PR-234B-2 folder WWIIIMig9 goes in the Mig-9FS folder Place the individual skins in the appropriate folder: ie. the WWWIIILag7 skin goes into the Lag7 folder. Starting you career 1. Go to Pilot Carrer 2. Choose USAAF with the rank of Major 3. Choose WWIII 1946 4. Choose the following in the Difficulty menus. Turn off the following toggles. You do not want these options chosen for various reasons a. Turn off Cockpit Always On - I want you to look around and see all the cool stuff b. Turn off No External Views - For the same reason c. Turn off No Icons - Those Lerches and ME 163 are very small d. Turn off No Instant Success - Don't use this very often. There are some missions that just don't have anywhere to land in them. e. Turn off No Map Icons - At this point in history radar was able to vector you to your targets pretty well so use the map to do this. I need help in completing this massive project. America's Ace of Ace's Richard Bong 40 kills with a P38 Lightning
Hairog replied to Hairog's topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: File Announcements
If you want the real scoop on the P38 and not just propaganda put out by the P51 and P47 cabal...check this website out. http://home.att.net/~ww2aviation/P-38.html "Combat radius helps to win air wars. This simple observation sums up much of what distinguished the P-38 from its contemporaries, and also why this aircraft must be considered the single most significant fighter in the US inventory in W.W.II. The critical air battles, when Allied strength was still building up and Axis strength was at its peak, were fought by the P-38 force, deep inside hostile airspace against a numerically superior enemy. All other parameters being equal, it was the radius of the Lightning which allowed the ETO daylight bombing offensive to succeed at a time when losses were high and long term success questionable. By the time Mustang numbers built up in the ETO, the Luftwaffe had already crossed the knee in the Lanchesterian attrition war curve and defeat was inevitable. While the much admired P-51 made a critical contribution, it is worth noting that cumulative deployments of the Merlin powered P-51 matched the P-38 only as late as the end of 1944, which is clearly at odds with the established mythology. With the 8th AF, the long range escort load was shared equally by the P-38 and P-51 throughout the decisive first half of 1944. In the Pacific, where land based air grappled with the Japanese, the Lightning was the foremost fighter, destroying more Japanese aircraft than any other Allied fighter. The air battles over New Guinea, the Solomons, the invasion of the Phillipines and later Okinawa were all campaigns where the radius and performance of the P-38 were fundamental advantages over Japanese air assets. The perception of the P-38 as a mediocre aircraft is clearly the result of wartime propaganda run unchecked, and lay interpretations of period statements. The historical record clearly indicates that the big twin was there when it really mattered and there can be no greater a compliment for its designers. It was the aircraft which allowed the USAAF to play an offensive strategy almost from the very beginning of combat operations. The P-38 was without doubt the strategically most important American fighter of World War II."
