  1. Flying for the other side.

I get caught up emotionally too. Though being American (not Yank, I'm in the south), I usually feel better flying for Germany. Maybe it's the German lineage I have. However, it just got loads easier to fire up the ol' N28 and go looking for that moving, flesh colored target in no man's land.
  2. Can Anyone recommend a good book?

I was only half serious. If you can give him the gift of a love for reading, it's one of the best you could ever give him.
  3. Can Anyone recommend a good book?

If he wants good pictures in color of WWI aircraft and combat, give him OFF
  4. My main damage complaint has always been the disabling of my ailerons with the first hit. Something I read here bothers me. It makes sense that the aileron cables are very thin, but shouldn't the hit boxes be in the wings they run through and only a small one in the fuselage? Would make more sense to me, but then, I don't know how CFS3 handles that part. Just a thought. You've got a lot more cable or torque tube or push rod in the wings plus pulleys, bellcranks, the ailerons themselves, etc.
  5. Top 5 aircraft for next OFF installment

    voisins,caudrons,farmans,caproni's,DH-4's,salmsons, breguets,albatross c models, aviatiks...see the trend ?
  6. Cool.

And that's why we do our pre-flight checks for real before takeoff.
  7. Fine WW1 aviation art

The Aerodrome Forum has lots of paintings and links.
  8. She could pull my prop through any day! For my part, beats the hell out of Amelia Earhart. Nice find Olham...though I agree witk UK W about the first one. Would need to see her out of the flying gear to judge for sure.
  9. That "other WW1 flight sim"

How about SSI's Gettysburg? Took a whole 4x8 board for the map and weeks to play the whole 3 day battle. Also there was Jutland as well as the box games already mentioned....alas all gone now but not entirely missed. Richthofen's War was my first also. There were some good attempts at single player like Patton's Best, another with B-17's and another with matrices and cards for WWII Armor but I can't remember the name.
  10. OT-Flu and Cold Season

Exactly Conrad. It's good sense like that that keeps the sky from falling.
  11. Project Aerodromes

I have 99.9% accurate maps of all areas of the western front including the Vosges. I did have to note the aerodrome locations on them manually, I've been navigating strictly by map and compass (if the plane has one) since before Phase 2. I even have some balloon and army base locations marked as well as RR yards. These are paper maps and I never use the in-game map except for the briefing at the beginning. It's just not cricket for me.
  12. Flying by map

The link I posted solves all that but if you desire to struggle on, go ahead.
  13. That "other WW1 flight sim"

how does one get the demo? I'd like to try it and see if it does anything for me.
  14. Flying by map

This is a link to the sticky OFF General help, second topic. It's a repost by uncleal of a post I put up a couple of years ago, so map navigating has been discussed for some time. I've found no better method except you have to note airdromes, army bases, balloons, etc. on the maps yourself. As close as you can get to how they actually did it in WWI except these maps are better. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=37490 If you have any questions, let me know, I'll be glad to help you out on techniques, etc. we use in real life flying.
  15. OT Avatar the Movie

First...OVS is absolutely right. They keep thinking of new ways to terrorize, maim, torture and kill people and put it on TV. The only commercial TV I watch anymore is CBS on Monday from 8 to 10..all comedies. The rest is either PBS or my own DVD's and videos. When I'm not devoting time to OFF, that is. Second ... Parental Control is a nice concept..like Utopia. I raised 3 kids and you can exercise control all you want, but remember, you only have control over school age kids for maybe 2 or 3 hours of the day...the rest of the time, they're not with you unless you can afford to watch them 24/7. Meanwhile, they're under the influence of TV, radio, friends, 'music' and the propaganda machine we call the public school system. Third...I saw Avatar and was very impressed by it. It will definitely be added to my collection. Great special effects, interesting story, decent acting. It does have a lot of liberal influence attributed to the director or produce (I don't remember which) but the messages are there if you look for them, but they're not bad. They're mostly anti war, anti corporate greed, pro environment, anti conquest, etc. You can take it as a commentary on the U.S. but they can apply to just about any country and any era, they're not overt, and they don't detract from the film. It's obvious to the most casual of observers that what the bad guys are doing is wrong. I strongly recommend the movie.
  16. What a find.

    start scanning and posting please
  17. OT: RC plane vs. kids with fireworks

Like flying over no man's land in OFF to me. And were those flaming onions?
  18. redownloading HITR

Sort of on the same note, I did a complete reinstall and couldn't find the answer to this one question. On a new or fresh install, does BHAH need to be patch to 1.32 mini? Or do you just install HITR over a raw BHAH install? I patched BHAH and then installed HITR on mine.
  19. HItR original AI

The flight I mentioned in another thread had both elements. The AI was very aggressive in the fight (shot down the other 4 planes in my flight) and the dogfight was so hectic I couldn't fixate on a single target long enough to see him actually go down though I did shoot down two. They did not fly passively at all until I damaged them and then their maneuvering became less, due to damage I assumed. I also spotted them first, I was looking back checking on my wingmen's position and I counted 5 instead of 4. Then, when I ran out of ammo and beat feet for home, I saw my pursuer actually reverse direction and return home after chasing me for a few miles on my side of the lines. With the previous AI, he would've chased me all the way to landing at my home base. I still like it so far. I only compare AI in campaign mode not QC.
  20. I had a dogfight with my 4 wingmen against four DVa's. I shot down two and ran out of ammo on the third. In the process they shot down all four of my wingmen and at least one chased me to my own lines. I continued to draw away from him and a few miles on my side of the lines, I saw him turn back. Another time, my flight encountered a flight of Alb's. I closed on the tail and drew lead on an Alb DII when suddenly I was hit. I looked behind me and saw the Alb DIII who a second later killed me. AI seems pretty good and realistic to me so far.
  21. Check Controls Before Flight

Being a pilot, I always do that anyway for realism, but it has had it's benefits. One time, in so doing, I discovered that my roll axis was reversed. Would've been a bit tricky in the air. So, more reality from OBD. Those preflight checks can pay off. Also, looking around to check get's the scenery all loaded so less stuttering.
  22. I would support this only if you got rearmed and/or refueled after an amount of time, as it would realistically take. Lewis guns could be very quick; exchange empty drums for full ones, but belt fed MG's would take lot's longer.
  23. Using Avira antirus. Am now getting what I believe is a false positive on OFFManager.exe since installing HITR Has anyone else seen this or is mine infected somehow?
  24. False Positive

Thanks Conrad. i remember scanning that thread before but I didn't pay much attention as I wasn't using Avira at that time. Also, I just started getting it with the add-on. Hopefully got it sorted now.
  25. Snow on the Bayou AGAIN

I moved down here to get away from snow, ice and cold! I've put the people here on notice...I better never see snow. Otherwise, there's nothing preventing me moving to Alaska. Except maybe the mosquitos.
