Do I need Strike Fighter?

I just purchased WOV and have WOE on pre-order. Do I need Strike Fighter to install the various mods, updates, etc. that appear to be available? If I don't have Strike Fighter but do have WOV and WOE, what type of scenarios and mods can I not use and how big a deal is it? Thanks for any information.
