  4. BATTLE OF LONGEWALA December 05, 1971 AFS Jaisalmer - home to a detachment of No. 122 Squadron Hunters. In the early hours of 5th December 1971, a radio called the base commander, "This is Tiger, here (Maj. Gen. Khambata, GOC 12 Div). I suspect that an enemy armoured column is making rapid headway for Ramgarh. Our post at Longewala has heard tank noises throughout the night and seen tanks go past it with full headlights towards Ramgarh. I want your boys to investigate as early as possible." The Division Commander's voice on the radio was grave with anxiety. While the aircrew were being put into the picture, the situation at Longewala was fast deteriorating. Enemy tanks carrying infantry elements had placed a ring around the Longewala post and had begun shelling it. Company Commander at the post was Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri. Faced with this situation and being severely outnumbered and up against an armoured assault, he could at best appraise the Division of the magnitude of threat & clamour for help. He was advised to await the friendly Air Force at first light. IAF Hunters get airborne at first flight When the first two Hunters of the IAF arrived on the scene, the enemy was still shelling the post but was yet to hit any worthwhile target. The Hunters came in scanning the road from Ramgarh; Flt. Lt. D.K. Dass and Fg. Off. R.C. Gosain with eyes peeled, guided by an Air Observation Post aircraft, found the enemy's T-59 tanks. The fight between the IAF and the Pakistani armour began. They called up and picked on a tank which was closest to the area, not even 50 metres from Chandpuri’s besieged post. "01 Alpha" entered the dive, put his aiming index on the tank and fired half his rockets. The tank lumbered a few meters in the sand, spit and ignited. "Bravo" yelled with joy. "You have got him Alpha! He is burning, the bastard!" He himself was getting into the firing range. He had picked on a tank and pressed the trigger for a short time and behold....that tank was shattering into splinters! Even as Mission 01 was turning towards home, yet another pair of aircraft flown by Bali and Yadav was on its way to the target area. By the time the last mission over Longewala had completed its attack, the enemy force lay in shambles. The enemy's morale had evidently been completely shattered. With the plans of over running Longewala, Ramgarh and then capturing Jaisalmer airfield foiled, the enemy’s morale was at its lowest ebb. It is more than a mere conjecture that the enemy, never in his wildest dreams, could have imagined that the small air contingent of the IAF positioned at Jaisalmer would destroy their powerful armoured thrust. By noon the next day, the assault ended completely, having cost Pakistan 22 tanks claimed destroyed by aircraft fire, 12 by ground anti-tank fire, and some captured after being abandoned, with a total of 100 vehicles claimed to have been destroyed or damaged in the desert around the post. The Pakistani attack was first halted, and then Pakistani forces were forced to withdraw when Indian Army AMX-13 tanks from the 20 Lancers, and the 17th Rajputana Rifles launched their counter-offensive to end the six-hour combat; Longewala had proved to be one of the defining moments in the war.

  12. One of the problems many problems that IAF pilots reported with the Gnat was trouble in maintaining pitch after landing gear was retracted. The Gnat was pretty much a Work in Progress when it entered IAF service, there were other handling issues, which lead to many fatal crashes. As one of the IAF Gnat pilots quoted - "The Gnat was more like a spirited and young maiden and therefore, with a mind of its own. It had to be tamed and flown with a firm hand. The Gnat was a killer alright,a killer to its pilot if he does not know how to tame it and a killer to its enemy,if he did".
  13. The Atlantique Shoot Down On 10 Aug 99 at 10:51 hrs IST an Indian AF ground radar picked up an aircraft track inside Sindh region of Pakistan near Badin, approaching the Indo-Pakistan international border (IB) on a South-Easterly course. The track was moving at a speed of 370 kmph maintaining a height of 3000-3500 feet. It first touched the international border (at point 68 degree 48 min E, 24 degrees 18 min North) at 10:54 hrs. For the next 17-18 minutes it carried out a series of manoueveres over this area. (In this process, the track stayed within or close to 10 km of the boundary. Two MiG-21bis Interceptors, callsigns Delta One & Delta Two, of No.45 "Flying Daggers" Squadron, which were on operational readiness at Air Force Station Naliya in Kutch, were brought to a higher state of scramble alert as the track approached the International Border. When the track crossed the international border the first time at approximately 10:57 hrs, both the interceptors were scrambled, getting airborne at 10:59 hrs. Both interceptors visually sighted the intruder and identified it as an Atlantique of the Pakistani Navy. Delta One closed in to 300 meters of the Atlantique, intending to formate on him and signal him visually and, if possible, communicate with him on radio to direct him to land at the nearest IAF base. By now, of course, both interceptors had not only identified the intruder as an Atlantique but visually seen its identification markings. As Delta One was jockeying into position, the Atlantique turned into him in an aggressive evasive attempt. This was a hostile act. As per international norms he ought to have maintained his course and height and in fact lowered his under-carriage as a sign of submission as per the Rules of Engagement. The Atlantique had earlier been declared hostile after it had been identified, as the Atlantique falls into the category of "hostile" as per established procedure. A hostile aircraft does not have the option to return home; he has only two options - follow instructions to forceland at an IAF base, or be shot down. When the intruder turned into Delta One in an obvious attempt to throw him off and make a dash for the border, on clearance from the fighter controller, Delta One maneuvered his fighter for a missile launch on the PN Atlantique to prevent him escaping. The Atlantique was engaged at 11.17 Indian Standard Time (GMT +5.30) by a Vympel R-60 (NATO reporting name ‘AA-8 Aphid’) infra-red guided air-to-air missile. The missile hit the Atlantique’s port engine making the aircraft loose control and hit marsh land in the Great Rann of Kutch. The MiG-21 interceptors were immediately ordered to break away to the right to ensure that they stayed within Indian territory. The Atlantique after being shot continued to be seen on IAF ground radars. It entered a loose descending spiral turn to the left, burning fiercely with wreckage falling off; in the process, it described an arc 5 km within Pakistani territory before facing an approximately south-easternly direction again close to the IB before it disappeared from the IAF ground radar screen. 14. New INS Vikrant being built

Sitting on your couch in an air-conditioned room, it is easy to thrash India, but have your thought about the kind of pesky neighbours India has? One is a failed state and an active supporter of terrorism, and which looks like it will self-destruct at any moment. The other is a regional bully which can only call Asia's two failed states as it true friends!!! So ,there you have the reason for having those "Useless" Aircraft carriers, fighters jets.
