Strike Fighters PR Germany Terrain
Stwa posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
My game is WOE based, but recently I had to consilidate all my "separate" installs into one. Sooo, I titled it "Strike Fighters". Original, eh? But, when doing so, I stumbled accross Brain32's Pr_Germany tile set. On my system, I fixed these, so they don't display any trees, or the little buildings. (unless they are targets), but the result was incredible frame rates, and complete clarity of the terrain. So good, in fact, you can generally spot the silver enemy planes at a considerable distance without using the target boxes. I was also able to adapt these tiles to the BeringSt terrain, which made it look incredible as well. -

Oh, and download this puppy. Make copies and rename them germanyR1.bmp and germanyR2.bmp. Put both tiles into your GermanyCE terrain folder, and these will create a nice look underneath your airfields. PR_GERMANYR3.bmp -
WE need to find a permanent home on the home page for this pic. Its been a while, but this TOTALLY restores my faith in the military uppers in DC.

Enhanced Hi-res Terrain Set for Wings Over Europe
Stwa replied to max188's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - File Announcements
Very nice, Not trying to sound greedy here, but have you ever thought about doing one for WOV. About half of the tiles from WOE will work for WOE, and many of the TGA's just need the WOV sea color. -
Anyone remember our discussion about Destineer Studios and the EULA, etc.. Its here ---> http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=26119&hl If this can be believed, the real news is here ---> http://www.closecombatseries.net/CCS/

New Look/Stuff for WOE
Stwa posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I am mainly finished with my F-104G Starfigher "mods". I am still trying to complete a German camo skin based on the existing supplied by TW. I was able to easily add the German squads to the Red Hammer campaign. So, I made some quick changes to the UI. Here is a look. -

Also, I am getting close to finishing the "new" German Camo. I keep getting sucked in to working on a IsraelDES2 terrain, otherwise I would be finished already. The fusalage is done. It still needs work on the wings and tail. -
F-105 campaign missions-running out of fuel
Stwa replied to Foxendown's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I am probably not really qualified to answer your question, but this would be my experience from WOV. 1. Just like in the real military, the Brass in WOV can come up with some real nightmare missions sometimes. 2. You need to make your own assesment if the mission is BS or not. 3. If so, you should probably try to make the mission "look good" even though it will result in failure. 4. Its not worth it (for you and your wingman) to run out of gas over North Vietnam, just to blow up their hanger or fuel tank. 5. Sooo, drop your bombs on an alternate target, and if you are really lucky, down an few Mig's before you return home. -

NO! WAIT! There are 2 more slots in the Decal INI file for this skin. Soooo, I was able to support both positions for the Squadron Badge. Now if I can just figure out who gets what. And maybe the tail badge needs to be smaller and moved up a little? -
I find very hard to dogfight in Normal mode of WOE series!
Stwa replied to skyline's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
10. NEVER fight when you are out of Sparrow's. 11. Probably, for most American birds of the era, just like in WW2, the very first rule is .... NEVER DOGFIGHT with the enemy. You might get killed, and you're flyin a 20 million dollar jet, not to mention the cost to train you to fly. -

OK noob, I never give advice, for fear that I will be completely off target. But I think I can handle your request. 1. Learn how to use the SPARROW's. FLY only your F-15A. 2. NEVER go to enemy territory. ONLY select COMBAT AIR PATROL. 3. USE 50% fuel OR LESS. 4. Never get closer than 4 miles to ANY potential air target. (see #1 above). 5. If you are worried about your wingmen, order them to RTB. 6. If (1-5) still do not work, then go to Column5's Site and download an F-16 (any model will do). 7. When using your sidewinders remember, they are heat seekers, so you "fire and forget" them. (i.e. move on quickly to the next unfortunate target). 8. Almost forgot! NEVER fly in Campaign mode. Do not be affraid. Normal mode is not so hard. You need just some skill. Skill you get in practise. Fly, fly, fly Use your external views too. Lock your enemies/targets with your visual "lock" keys "R" "T" and for ground targets "E". Use ECM ("Z") and chaffs/flares ("X" and "C") dispensers if your aircraft is equiped with dispensers. 9. You don't need any of this stuff. (see #1 and #4 above). -
New Look/Stuff for WOE
Stwa replied to Stwa's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Hi Soulfreak , I think I tried that skin. It was real nice, but the white outline on the fuselage numbers created a bizarre "barber pole" effect from the external view. That really messes with a person my age. I would be about to ram a sidewinder up some Mig's .... and I would hop to the external view to see if the numbers where ok. Anyway, I just use one skin for all squads, so I decided to put all squad/wing/stormo or whatever on the tail. I even made the Italian birds do it. This way I don't have to have 45 MB's of skins. I am also using the stock USAF silver model for not just the Germans, but for the Italians, and Belgians as well. Notice it has a black anti-glare thing. Not exactly right either. Also, I just couldn't get used to those white wings. I tried em (several versions by several authors), but they drove me crazy. I don't think TK thought that there would be bare metal and paint on the same bird at the same time. It was tough finding a correct value for reflections. By the way I spoke to a German F-104G pilot, and he told me about Norm 62 (TA 196) camo. The order was actually issued in 1963 to paint the German Starfighters with this camo scheme. It would have been tough for the pilots to refer to the camo as Norm 72, seeing how it was still in the 60's and all. -

Got rid of the white board too...probably not really in use in the 50's and 60's. Or 70's for that matter. -

Thx guys, But I was really hoping you all noticed that my campaign screen doesn't have that gay little notepad anymore. Actually, I think I got rid of that sometime last summer. It just didn't seem to fit in with the pistols, maps, sunglasses, etc. It's a kharma thing I guess. -
Graphics issues when increasing DetailMeshSize value
Stwa replied to samtheeagle's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I believe in CFS3 parlance that area is referred to as the "rendering ring". In CFS3 this was generally a set of concentric circles going outward from the center of your aircraft. The terrain detail (or resolution) if you will, would be greatest just under the aircraft. On my system, with WOE, for example, this ring, is really a square I think. And if you increase the resolution of the terrain tiles, then the area associated with this square becomes smaller, and would appear that the tearing occurs along the boundry of this square. There is another setting somewher in the data.ini for the terrain, that can be set to eliminate this effect, but you are still left with a very visible "rendering ring", because it has been made smaller by the increase in resolution. -

WEAPONS!! We don't need no steenking weapons. -
I am just now getting around to the F-104G Starfighter in WOE. To that end I have tied it to all the F-4F squadrons in the game since JG 71,74 and JBG 36 used Starfighters prior to the F-4F. JBG 35 used the Fiat G.91, but I set them up for Starfighters as well, just for fun. At some point I would also like to set up Belgium, Dutch, and Danish squadrons, as well as German JBG 31-34 squadrons. Its amazing that the F-104 model is so much fun and looks so good in the sim. I believe it was created around the 2003 time-frame. Anyway I have a few questions that I have not been able to answer for myself. I have used to wiki to get a good list of users/squadrons. 1. The German Camo included is named "German Tactical Camoflauge", but I was wondering if the was the "Norm 62". I have seen references to "Norm 62" scheme in some photos, but I wonder if it really existed, and if so, does the TW F-104G camo represent it, or is it just fictional? 2. I used the exisiting WOE Squadron Patch decals for the 4 German Squadrons JG 71,74 and JBG 35,36. I created my own Squadron Name decals, just following the example included in SFP1, but I was wondering if someone has already created Patch decals for JBG 31-34? I know SFP1 has a decal for JBG 31. 3. Also, I was planning on using the USAF Silver skin, for other nationalities, like Belguim, etc.. I was hoping this skin would be close enough, but was wondering if others felt the same way.

F-104G Starfighter
Stwa replied to Stwa's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Gosh Derk, thanks a lot for the offers of assistance. But, I am probably not the right person for the job. I have never done an aircraft skin before. The skin above was made by Thirdwire around 2003 or so. I wish I knew who the artist was. Also, someone needs to work with ravenclaw_007, if he is willing, and produce some HI-RES Dutch examples of the F-104. I think the community at large would be most interested in the HI-RES skins. I would be willing to e-mail you a zip with the new Dutch Numbers etc... Regards, Stwa -
F-104G Starfighter
Stwa replied to Stwa's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The more I look at your pic of D-8300, the more I see curved painted surfaces. From what I gather Norm 72 was a splinter pattern of straight surfaces. If true D-8300 may be following a NATO pattern? Also, from what I have read, the Dutch for some aircraft did "loosely" use a facsimile of the Norm 72 pattern. So there may be some minor diffrences from the specified pattern. Here are a few that did NOT use the Luftwaffe Norm 72 'Splinter' pattern. -
F-104G Starfighter
Stwa replied to Stwa's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I wanted to thank everyone for the links and info on the Starfighters. Obviously for HI-RES stuff, ravenclaw_007's work is the new benchmark. Probably nothing better than this stuff. But for LO-RES stuff, that match the rest of the WOE game components, I went with RNLAF Super Pak from Jet-Z. ---> http://www.12packproductions.com/JetZ/index.html This stuff was already in a nice package, worked with the stock F-104G. Of course I had to make my own little tweeks, but his stuff allowed me to add 5 Dutch squads to the game, plus a new skin. Here is what I ended up with. 1. As it turns out the TW stock German Tactical Camo is probably not German at all. But I did find out that this scheme was NATO and employed by the RNLAF. Specifically D-8127 and perhaps some others. So I won't use this skin for German starfighters. But this skin IS NOT fictional. 2. I added one new RNLAF skin from Jet-Z, which was Light Grey. 3. I took all of Jet-Z's Dutch serial numbers and reworked them so there was just one set (and one size as opposed to 2 sizes), and also re-did the colors a bit and how the alpha channel was applied. I renumbered and sorted all the numbers (what a hag), and put them into one large number.lst, so all of the squads could use the same list. 4. Using JetZ's Dutch stuff makes more sense, and it fits into the existing game a lot better, than doing the Italians or Belgians, I think.
