P-40B Sharkmouth
Stwa replied to Stwa's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I think this post is dead on, and I feel the same way. It makes me want to do a Rangoon mini terrain. -
P-40B Sharkmouth

I spent time today painting out all the insignia on the P-39D skin so they don't show whenever you select a nation with smaller roundels. And for some reason, WoX can't locate my WW2 squadron badge decals. Dunno? I got 11 kills in one mission with this bird this evening. Fur-ball had over 30 planes, which is good for my system. -

BTW, I meant Wolf did the model. I just added the decals and sharkmouth. Check this. The Germans show up at Guadalcanal. -

I didn't know this terrain a remake? But didn't you remake several existing terrains yourself. Me thinks Israel, BoB, and ..., and ..., GERMANY! And did TK, remake your Israel terrain. Dunno? In fact Gephard, you might be the greatest terrain re-maker of ALL TIME. And why did you remake terrains. To make them better? OIC.

http://combatace.com/files/file/7115-midway-terrain-version-10/ MIDWAY TERRAIN ===================== I. Midway terrain is made for "Strike Fighters Project 1" SFP1. You can use it in Wings over Vietnam and Wings over Europe too. Wings over Israel can handle this terrain too, but the flight modells of prop driven planes shows anomalies in WOI. ============================================== II. Midway terrain covers a part of the Central Pacific Ocean with the atolls of Kure and Midway. It is the place were in 1942 a big Air-Sea-Battle was fought between the Imperial Japanese Navy and the US Navy. The japanese Navy was superior in numbers of ships, but the US side had some major advantages. No.1, the japanese communication code was broken, so that the US Navy commanders were able to read the enemy commands. No.2, the US had radar coverage, so that enemy surprise attacks were nearly impossible. No.3, the US had the superior number of airplanes which were deciding during the battle. The battle was fought as a pure air to sea combat. No single gunfire exchange between naval vessels took place. The result was that the japanese Navy lost 4 carriers and the US Navy lost 1 carrier. It was a impressive victory for the USA in Pacifice war theater. You can compare it with the Battle of Moscow on the Eastern Front or the first british victories in North Africa. Midway Terrain following target areas this are Kure Atoll (Neutral airbase) Eastern Island (Midway AB USMC) Sand Island (Midway USMC) ship formations Japan +Midway Occupation Force +Midway Support Force +Second Fleet Main Force ( 1 small carrier) +First Fleet Main Force (1 small carrier) +First Fleet Carrier Strike Force ( 4 carriers) USN +TF-16 (2 carrier) +TF-17 (1 carrier) ********************************************* III Known problems Up today it is impossible to take off and land from carriers while using single missions which are generated by random single mission screen. Thatswhy i added invisible airfields for taking off and landing in the centre of carrier formations. You will also start from the sea. This is not satisfying. Thatswhy it is the best to start the mission in the air to overcome this problem. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ IV. INSTALLATION 1.)unzip all files into your Terrain folder 2.)unzip Groundobject.rar into your Objects folder. Thats it. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ V. Credits At this place i want to say thank you to the guys who made the groundobjects and who gave me the permission to use them in Midway terrain. A very big thank you to Capun for the Akagi and Yorktown type carriers, the Brooklyn cruiser, the Destroyer, the Liberty etc. Also a big thank you to Hinch for the Zuiho carrier and the japanese Battleship which is a moded Repulse etc. Thanks to TK for the great SFP1 sim family. And finally thanks to all guys who helped me with hints, advices etc. ******************************************* VI. Midway Terrain IS FREEWARE. COMMERCIAL USE IS NOT ALLOWED. GROUNDOBJECTS are forbitten to share. If you want to do this please contact the makers of this Groundobjects If you find bugs please post them in StrikeFighters section of Combatace.com forum. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ VII. Hope you enjoy it. Michael (Gepard) ============================================ VIII. Made in Germany August 2008 ============================================ IX. PS Q: How i can get Midway Terrain running in WOV, WOI or WOE A: 1. Open file Midway.ini 2. Look for line CatFile=..\Desert\Desert.cat 3. Replace this line with: for WOV: CatFile=..\VietnamSEA\VietnamSEA.cat for WOI: CatFile=..\IsraelME\IsraelME.cat for WOE: CatFile=..\GermanyCE\GermanyCE.cat

WW2 Using WOX
Stwa replied to Stwa's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Now, one of the goals of this project was to NOT add even one weapon to the weapons ini file. And that has been accomplished. Had the stock weapons stuff provided a UK 250 lb general purpose bomb, I would have used those bombs. They date back to 1926. But I used the Mk 80 series, because there are NO CONTRAINING dates to those bombs in the weapons ini file. -
WW2 Using WOX

Hey Wrench, I hope the authorities have legalized pot in your state. If true, perhaps you should consider some heavy duty medicinal therapy that you can only provide with an appropriate bong. Then, kick back, and check out some of the screenies going forward here in this thread. You might be interested, all this stuff is already finished and operational. I have completed the "first phase". Next phase are just general improvements, etc. I just don't spend hundreds of hours (on anything) especially on hobby stuff. In my terrain, the Martlets are part of the Cactus Air Force! -
WW2 Using WOX
Stwa replied to Stwa's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
It has been a long time since I have done any WW2 stuff. Of course, I tried it when I first got the game, but I set it all asside for years on end. So I got a small plan together yesterday, and then I finished up the first phase of that plan today. The plan is a very uniform Cactus Air Force that I can use with the Solomon Islands terrain. To do so, I must allow non-stock birds, but I want to minimize the WW2 footprint, because it will all reside in my existing environment. I have identified all the birds; A6M2 Zero, A6M5 Zero, F4F-3 Wildcat, F4F-4 Wildcat, Martlet Mk.I, Martlet Mk.III, P-39D Airacobra, and P-400 Airacobra. All aircraft are SF1, first generation. The Airacobras can carry 1 Mk82 bomb. All others can carry 2 Mk81 bombs. No aircraft can carry external fuel tanks. Enemy planes come from off-map airbases, and its assumed they have already dropped their empty fuel tanks before they get to Guadalcanal, and Friendly planes are operating mostly over Guadalcanal, and do not need fuel tanks. -
WW2 Using WOX

Hey Dave, I hope you have been doing well. This site rocks, as before. You guys have done a great job here. The game is timeless and I never get bored, but alot of that has to do with Combat Ace. -
One of the main reason for coming by this year was to ask the following question. Do you guys still play WW2 stuff using WOX or SF1. Or has WW2 gone over to SF2?

Battle of Britain 1960
Stwa replied to Stwa's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I am having a real blast with this terrain. And I didn't build it, Baltika did. And I can confirm he was very thorough and meticulous. Well, I hope to see you guys again soon. It was great chatting with everyone. We have been ordered up again, and it is very real. A CAP mission over John Lennon Aerodrome. Yup! The Empire is back. -

Once you have the basic map in, then use Excel to plot the locations of all the target areas you want to indicate on the maps. I use 3 zoom layers, and make each map independent of another. It is just grunt work really. -

Just use something that supports layers. I use limp Gimp. Here are a couple I did back in the day. Israel DES was one of Gephards first terrains. It is considered a classic. Then there was Iraq ME. I like to do the Middle East maps. Once and a while I drag these terrains out for some real fun. -

Just in case anyone is interested, here is a listing of the total targets in each of the 9 terrains I maintain. I only use stock targets. BritishIs UK = 11,786 Germany CE = 10,350 Israel ME = 8,532 Persian Gulf ME = 8218 Vietnam SEA = 5,098 Cuba CARIB = 776 FalklandIs* SA = 285 Iceland* NA = 257 SolomonIs* SWP = 179 * = These terrains have off map enemy air bases, which have only 1 target each, the runway. -

Battle of Britain 1960
Stwa replied to Stwa's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Me thinks the Americans and the French will fly Super Sabres, but more C models than D models. Ok, so I have cloned over 1962 Red Hammer, and I would expect to have a campaign ready shortly. I will call it Battle of Britain or perhaps Red Herring. Here is a map of cold war airbases in France, that we will assume were captured by the Soviets, according to the story line. I will get the cordinates for these and get what I can into the game. -

Uh-huh! [impersonating Barney the purple dinosaur] Now please remember, that I only added a few enemy air bases in France for this terrain. There appeared to be only 1 non-stock target, that I pitched. But, the total number of targets present in the target data file are 11,786. -

New planning maps are started. I will add the air base and text labels when I have figured out where everything is gonna go in France. -

That being said, sometimes I go "hog wild" with a terrain. For Israel 2, I retiled the entire terrain with a custom set of WOV tiles. The I customized some of the custom tiles. Here is what the IsraelME terrain folder looks like. -

OMG! Its Gephard! Thanks for the info on your terrain. And thanks for the others down through the years. I have Israel 2 and Persian Gulf. For some reason, that I cannot explain, when I get a third party terrain, the first thing I do is remove all non-stock target types. In this case, just reference GermanyCE_types.ini. This step only took a few seconds with Baltika's terrain. Anyway, on my system, I am supporting 9 different terrains, and for the most part each terrain folder looks like the following: -
Well, this was to supposed to be my annual visit to Combat Ace for 2014. But, I just had to check out the download section, and I found this British Isles terrain by Baltika. I am not sure if I ever saw this one before. Dunno? I always want to do a modern Battle of Britain, but just never got around to it. I fiddled with a few dem files, but that was it. This map from Baltika is very nice. And, I was able to make it operational is just a few minutes. I wanted to make a few changes, because the terrain has many Soviet bases already in England. So, I changed all the ENEMY targets to FRIENDLY with a find and replace command. Then I cloned a nice large air base and added it at the end of the target list as an ENEMY base and positioned three of them in France, but directly south of London. So already, I can fly CAP missions until I puke while the Soviets throw everything they have at me.
