That was a pretty famous case Derk. I remember it from the news and newspapers of the time and It also got quite a lot of attention online. I always wondered why they didn't bury the guy under the jail but i forgot he had connections.

I'm not really impressed either. One AB leader years ago confessed to involvement in one way or another of 23 murders when he debriefed. Said thug from the OP is a mere tool compared to those that at the top of the heap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEvsD7pyp5w

Weapon Editor question
Lt. James Cater replied to hotrodss's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Odds are you were doing something wrong. Once you really get experienced with the missles you'll be able to score more often than not. Even your wingmen can become aces if you order them to engage in a situation where they can work the envelope. -

Aim-7 Sparrow in WOV
Lt. James Cater posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I've been wondering about this for a while.... In a few weeks i'm going to get my computer back up and so i'll be returning to action. While i was flying Thuds in campaign, i used to mess around with other aircraft in instant missions just to get a feel for different things. The one thing i noticed is that Sparrows seem to be rather more lethal than they were in reality. It's to the point where i can get a bogie dead on in the pipper, go boresight, lock, fire and be guaranteed a kill. Do they work that way in campaign as well? Sidewinders seem to be more realistic, i've had them fail to guide or have had enemy fighters break hard enough to cause them to overshoot. But Sparrows? One shot one, kill everytime. Any comments? -

Aim-7 Sparrow in WOV
Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I forgot i even did this thread! As it turns out, i must have been getting either near perfect setups or just very lucky. As one could see by checking out my experiences flying an F-4 in DiD, i've missed plenty of times with Aim7s even with textbook setups. -

Look for it in the downloads section and follow the Readme files carefully, It's a seperate install as it is a monster of a setup. Also, do a search in this forum and you'll find lots of info concerning it and people's adventures with various aircraft and situations. Enjoy! -

http://davenunez.wordpress.com/2009/12/25/best-games-you-never-played-operation-desert-storm-mod-for-wings-over-europe/ In my opinion, the most challenging campaign you will ever encounter with the WOV Gold mod a slight second. -
We all have at least one. My first is to quit drinking for a prolonged period as i've finally realized that i'm a textbook example of a functioning alcoholic and have been for years. Whatever booze i have left is being polished off and that's it until i get things under control. The next resolution is to pay more attention to my bass and get my new band off the ground and developed enough to be able to record a quality demo. The third is to find a way that someone without even a high school diploma but with a lifetime's worth of experience can make some real money. I have a few more but those are really personal. So let's hear yours!

The Double D's
Lt. James Cater replied to hgbn's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Hawkins KIA. Made an intercept with Drake on wing. Made a text book attack and Drake got an IL28 while Hawkins missed with all missles. Migs were all over so while Drake ran for home low, Hawkins climbed high with thee MIGs on his tail. Despite getting up to 40,00ft and being at full throttle, a MIG 19 closed to withing firing range. Hawkins then dove but the MIG couldn't be evaded and that was it. Siddley- If you look over my past posts, you can see what one will experience in a SPAD. The battles that my squadron fought against North Vietnamese air defenses would have wiped out a unit of fast movers in short order. A few times, i was absolutely convinced that the end at hand due sheer amount of ground fire but the SPAD got home despite damage that would have reduced any other aircraft to an earthbound fireball. -
Canberra= Fairey Battle
Lt. James Cater posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Anyone else feel this way? One of the things i like to do is check out other planes in action when i'm not occupied with something vital. The one thing that has alway struck me is that just how bad the loss rates of Canberras can get. It can be so bad that it can only be compared to the Fairey Battle as far as getting hacked down by fighters and ground fire. I remember a mission i flew doing escort to a formation of 12 Canberras hitting a target in Hanoi. I knew very well that there was no fighter threat but SAM was very active so after dodging two of them i decided to hell with it and flew a pattern off the coast and waited for them to come back. In the meantime, i F6ed and followed their mission. The run towards the target was bad enough but they really got slaughtered on the egress. The final two losses were actually right on the coast with both aircraft hitting the water just offshore. A single damaged Canberra made it home. 11 shot down. And you see that more often than not. I've been doing WOE for quite a while now in DiD and whenever you hear "Taking Damage" while inbound you can almost guarantee it will be a Canberra. The damn things are Ivan's wet dream. You can see MIGs just tearing the absolute hell out of them on a regular basis. I've never flown as the Red side but i can just imagine what my score would look like after intercepting them a few times. Cliff11 has been flying a MIG19 recently in DiD and i wondered why on one mission he didn't down a whole flight of them. The IL28 "Iron Beagle" is such a tough bird to down that to be honest, i've grown to dread having to intercept them even if i have downed countless numbers of them. One can't say the same of the Canberra. One can imagine the excitement of an opposition pilot at the prospect of intercepting a formation of Canberras. As you fly into battle in 1962, it might as well be 1940 for the Canberra crews. -

Canberra= Fairey Battle

The B-57 was a very good combat aircraft. However, i'm just concerned with it's fate under AI control. It's low, slow and highly vunerable. Do a campain in WOE and after 10 missions or so check out the squadrons and you can bet that some Canberra units will already be effectively out of the fight due to losses. It's a better bomber than the IL28 by far. But unlike the Iron Beagle, once intercepted it is pretty much doomed to destruction. -

http://combatace.com/gallery/image/17921-clipboard-i1jpg/ Since my main comp went down i had to convert my gaming comp to general use and now it's halfway down the tubes. So i have to step away from WOV for the time being. WOE however, can still be coped with and i felt up to a challenge. The pilot-Cecil Hawkins, RAF 85 Squadron. Flying the Javelin, an absolute dog at anything other being a pure interceptor. First sortie is as usual, skimpy on details. 4 Javelins take off to intercept an incoming strike. We found them just short of the target and attacked but out of six Red Streaks fired by Hawkins and wingman Lowell only a single hit and the Beagle didn't go down. Hawkins made a guns attack and hit an IL28 but didn't down it either. The situation was to the point that a hasty return to base was called for since fuel was getting scarce but the number of Soviet fighters was increasing. Drake was chased for quite a ways but outran a pack of Mig17s. Mission failed. -

AIM-9B tactics
Lt. James Cater replied to Siddley's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The "Iron Beagle" is my pet peeve. Damn are they hard to kill in '62! We had a thread some time ago that discussed attack methods against them. A few pilots here choose the head on method but i am a proponent of two different aproaches. One is to come in jinking wildly and timing the fire from the rear gunner. The second is more practical. It is very similar to the Luftwaffe von unten hinten attack. Come in low until you are virtually underneath the Beagle then pull the nose up and spray the IL28 as it passes through your gunsight. The higher they are the better as you can get a better angle for the pull up. -
AIM-9B tactics
Lt. James Cater replied to Siddley's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Good luck with the 9B if you are doing low level intercepts. I did a DiD campaign flying a MirageIII not too long ago and was surprised when i checked my notes and found that missles were responsible for only 2 of 24 kills. When flying a MIG 21, the Atolls were so bad that i would come in straight and fast to let fly from .8 of a mile. Unfortunatly, in WOE doing the same with a formation of IL28s is not the way to live a long life. -
F-101A Voodoo Additional Missile Capability
Lt. James Cater replied to TheStig's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
To be honest i've neve flown a Voodoo in anything other than Recce flights. High and fast was the way to go and on few times a MIG 21 tried for a 6 o clock shot i was full throttle heading for the weeds. Besides, those early Atolls aren't exactly hard to evade. As tricky as the 101 is at high AOA, it seems to be more of a slash and burn plane ala the P-38. My modus operandi in early fighters intercepting low flying formations has always been to approach them at about 10,000ft and go for a path that'll bring me in about 5-6 miles behind them. Then it's a case of diving to blowing past the escorts, firing AAMs, closing to guns, overtaking the formation then reversing course to repeat the attack. Always go in full bore and don't let off the throttle. The intial attack is always the safest as you have a pretty good idea of where everyone is at and 9 out of 10 times the escorts will be lower on energy since they are turning to meet your attack while you are coming in blazing. Another factor will be your own squadron. MAX EFFORT is my motto. If a plane is available, send it up. usually while you and your wingman are the center of attention, the rest of your guys can sometimes catch the enemy off guard and score some kills. Missle armed birds can sometimes have a field day. Disengaging is a whole other story, i've always prefered to go full burner and head up high. As high and as fast as as possible heading west. -
F-101A Voodoo Additional Missile Capability
Lt. James Cater replied to TheStig's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
It all depends. My favorite tactic is get an opening, stand the bird on it's tail and hit full burner. Then you go in stages up to at least 30,000Ft in the direction of the front. You want to drag them up with you. Just make sure you stay just out of gun range. Once you are up high, level off and wait. Occasionally make a gentle S turn to check the enemy contrails but otherwise go straight and just fast enough to act as bait. Western fighters (except for the Javalin) all have more fuel to work with so you can imagine just how much the enemy has to burn to catch up with you. When the enemy turns away you have him at a marked disadvantage. If someone else comes along they'll have to be in a damn good spot considering the altitudes and speeds involved. Depending on aircraft and scenario it is possible to let the range open a bit, lock the enemy AC and take medium to max range SARH shots at the retreating foe. Flying a Deuce that was how i dealt with MIG-19s. And if the situation looks a bit too hairy? Stay high and fast until you are in the clear. -
