The Double D's
Lt. James Cater replied to hgbn's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
2Jan68 There was activity going on up North, but our orders were for an Armed Recce mission. me and LT Wiggins took off into a godawful murk. Once into the clouds it was pure pea soup instrument flying. Good thing we weren't going that far from Pleiku. The flight was stressing but uneventful. I sure hoped that our 8500ft flight altitude wouldn't put is into some mountain. lord knows how many times we've flown around here but you never know. Well, we finally got near the base area we were supposed to patrol and as we got close under the clouds, were we fired upon by the most vicious barrage of fire that i have ever encountered over Laos. As we dodged frantically and prayed fervently that we wouldn't hit a ridgeline while we were flying blind, something interesting was spotted. An enemy truck Wiggins seemed clear so i ordered him to attack while i tried to sort myself out and dragged attention away from him. It didn't really work. I couldn't see a damn thing down there but the amount of fire was tremendous Both of us were under heavy fire and our odds of getting out in one piece were slim. I heard Higgins call bombs away as i broke out of the clouds again. Luckily he was carrying a full load of napalm and he dropped it all. The resulting fireball made for a nice navigation marker and so i turned towards the flames. Wrong moves it turns out, as the groundfire exploded around me again. Another bit of luck came about. A handy hill was in front of me and so it allowed cover from the fire after i went full throttle towards it. In the meantime, i got some info from Wiggins. His plane was completely shot up. Left aileron and flap gone, holes in both wings all over the fuselage. By this time i had a good fix on the truck. Turns out we found a convoy! Seeing how bad the damage was to Wiggins's aircraft, i sent him home. I will admit, my first attacks were rather cautious. I didn't want to get within range of the guns and the weather and terrain were not the best combination possible. Soon though, a rhythm was established and the attackes became a sort of gunnery exercise. By now i knew were not to fly so as to avoid the guns and so i had a nice time. CBUs, napalm, WP, rockets and guns. Still had 20mm ammo left when i got the last one. Searched around for a bit more to make sure then went home. -

Being late and having another flight take out the target has happened to me enough times that i secondary targets are really needed and planned for. Sometimes it's a great thing to have the target hit beforehand because either it is in a hairy location or a juicier target is easily available. As for a file of the locations? I really think we ought to re-examine our older posts and update the info since the WOV GOLD mod had changed everything. For example, in the current campaign i've only flown as far as Vihn and in the past, those missions were milk runs. Go there casual and you WILL get shot down. I can only imagine what's up in RP 5 and 6 now. -

28DEC67 Had a strike mission and decided to bring the whole gang along. I was pretty aprehensive about this one but it went way better than i thought. The weather was fine so takeoff was a snap. It did take a while to join up and so that caused us a bit of a delay getting to the IP. A few more minutes were lost by having to manuver the force around one spot near our base that is over some AA emplacements. As it turns out, we never had to hit the target. Some B-52s got in ahead of us and absolutely pulverized everything near there as well as taking out our objective. The flak was hot though, there were some navy guys taking on the guns and they had already lost a plane(A-7) by the time we showed up. We were loaded for bear and so i let the boys loose about 10 miles south of the river. I was hoping things would be good but was shocked at the rampage that ensued! Some guns had been knocked out by the time we got there but we proceeded to wipe out everything from Chanh Hoa to the Arrowhead and west to the foothills. Man, we really rained down the pain today. The attacks were so frenzied that several times i would be in hot and watch the target vanish as someone beat me to it. We even managed to take out a few vehicles and a radar. Gotta love these kind of days. -
I know for a fact that i would NEVER send a kid to the local(Clark County,Nevada) public school system.

26DEC67 The Air Force gave us a late Christmas present. It turned out wrong though, we lost LT Webb. It was routine until we made a few bad decisions that doomed Webb. Coming in right on the heels of the strike on the target, we looked for something to drop what we had on but there really wasn't much. I made a run on the sole remaing building at the POL site but missed with my bombs. Heading out i noticed an AA gun nearby and ordered Webb to hit it. Seconds later i realized that it was amongst a concentration of guns belonging the Vihn's southern defensive belt. As Webb began his attack run, a firey comet fell to earth as one of the flak suppressors of another strike was shot down. Damn it! So i picked a gun and went in also. Just as Webb called bombs away i strafed my target and pulled up and away at full throttle to get us out of there while giving orders to rejoin. I was heading east towards the water at about 900 ft and hoped that Webb would come in behind me but his post drop turn was incorrect. He turned the wrong way and instead of having the guns at his 6, the oppisite turn meant that he would have to fly right over the worst of the fire. he almost made it. Perhaps 5 more seconds would have been good. I remembered when we had that area so sterile, a Piper Cub could have flown anywhere near Vihn without drawing a shot. This war is really getting old. -
AI wingmen orders
Lt. James Cater replied to andqui's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
One bit of advice given above is really good. Get in close before ordering everyone to attack ground targets. If you can, try to use more of your squadron if you are going into a intensely defended area. The more planes, the more ordnance. Chances that the targets will be taken out are greatly improved. -
In the same situation, she would have never even made it into my car. She dan well should have been fined for false advertising.

Is this classifide as my mid-life crisis?
Lt. James Cater replied to serverandenforcer's topic in The Pub
Always really wanted to seriously learn guitar but i hate twisting my finger into all those funny shapes know as chords. Instead, i have a Dean Metalman Z and a Rogue LX406. Don't have to worry that much about fretboard gymnastics with those. And it's not a mid life crisis. I've been in a number of bands and now i want to write and perform things exactly how I wanted to for some years now. -
I was in Best Buy a few days ago and they had a very good amount of PC games though the flight sim stuff was mainly MFS related. Go to a place like Fry's Electronics and you'll really hit the motherlode! That's where i picked up WOE for $10.

Personally, i'm a rather confrontational type and the older i get, the less i tend to respect any societal norm, regulation ,rule, etc etc unless it jibes with my own view. Screw them! Call yourself Ann Nominous or something else and jam your opinion regardless of consequence. Damn, i sorta wish i had a situation like that so i could raise hell with the authorities and damn right i would dare them to throw me in jail (Big Whoopie! I've been locked up before) because i wouldn't pay a damn cent of the fine. This issue should be blogged to the ends of the earth and links posted everywhere to mass media sites that have articles on this.

23DEC67. Don't know why we put the brakes on our activities so much. Do they think the enemy is going to pause too? Took LT Pardo on this mission to see what he could do. What a wimp he turned out to be. Missed the target and then was scared away by light AAA when he tried to strafe. Had to go in myself and got royally shot up in the process. This is yet another example of the A1 taking damage which would down any other plane in the inventory. Pardo got sent home and i flew up to Chanh hoa to take a look. Found out two things quickly. One-the north Vietnamese are restoring the base, two-the flak has been reinforced as well and they are really trigger happy. -

2 missions, only a single screenshot. 20Jun67 Was sent on a Recce mission over southern Laos. Didn't see a single thing. With the exception of being taken under fire by AA twice it was a milk run. Damn it if Charlie hasn't been resupplied with ammo. Gotta hunt down those guns soon. 22Jun67 Now this is more like it! A great mission all the way. Had LT Wiggins with me heading up North and so in light of the target and the weather we went with an unusual loadout to ensure we did the job. Armed with 5 MK117 High Drag each, we were sure to get at least one on the target. The takeoff and climb was routine and the route was the usual one. That the Big Chiefs were taking this seriously was signaled by the amount of flights heading to the target area. Can you imagine having THREE flak suppression flights? We were slightly behind but no big deal until Wiggins went Tard near the Garden. The only thing i could do was send him after the target and hope for the best. It turned out to be better than i thought. We made a classic hi-low attack and nailed it. Wiggins got in a little ahead of me and blew the primary away so i changed my aim point and went after the plant buildings. My aim and timing was just right and so i got a good release and turned hard to get out of there. Wiggins drew some fire up above as he broke out of the clouds, but i only had a single gun (est. 12 or 14.5mm) fire at me heading in and out. Back out to the Garden at top speed, climb to altitude, and went home. Got to love these kinds of days! -

18Jun67 Went out with LT Webb on a recce flight. Saw some trucks down below but only got one due to the lousy weather and Webb going Tard when ordered to hit a target i assigned him. Got ticked, went home. Number 24 complete. -

12Jun67 Did a lot more than i thought on this mission. Went with LT Wiggins right on the heels of a B-52 strike and got more than our primary target. Had a pair of A-4s doing flak suppression but the gunners were somewhat tough and so we spent some time pounding them before we could continue feeling comfortable. There was a lot of trucks there and so i got low and slow until it was time to go home. 14Jun67 What a horrible night! Lost LT Bruce Hill on a low level night attack. This mission was a mistake from the planning to execution. Went the usual route via Hue-Yankee Station-The Garden. Everything felt tenuous since Mamba flight (Some Marine A6s) and Dallas flight (Navy A-4 flak suppression)reported heavy fire in the target area and boy were they right! Since the last bombing halt the North Vietnamese have really stocked up places with guns and we just happend to run into a particularly dense concentration. I was forced into evasive actions no fewer than three times and was forced to drop ordnance from an unplanned altitude and so made an incorrect drop. LT Hill got shot down just as he reached the weapons release point. He bailed out but didn't stand a chance of making a run for it considering the area. -
Ran into this a few hours ago. Looks like i reached my upload limit and so i figured i'd ask here on what happens next. Thanks.

Wrench, certain photos have to remain due to specific thread subjects. I've gone through and deleted a few but some just can't be removed for a while.

I noticed the private setting and so changed that. I also found out where to delete old pics and so got rid of enough to be able to post briefing screens in the DID thread. What i'm trying to figure out is exactly how to connect a pic from the Album to the Browse so that it posts as a pic. I'm decent enough at figuring out certain things but this one has me stumped.

That's the last time I have to go Shopping
Lt. James Cater replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in The Pub
Retail, or as it's should be called, absolute hell on earth. When i worked for Target, i used to have to strongly resist the urge to kick some messy unsupervised brat so hard in the the head, their brains would splatter on the ceiling. Back 90s when i was running my own thing, the temptation to pull out the pistol i kept just in reach under top of my desk was sometimes overwhelming. A few times, "customers" got me to the point where i was listening to their crap with a finger on the trigger, thumb manipulating the safties. -

Ok, i'll try creating an album and see what happens. Just a few minutes ago i tried to post something again on the "Screenshot Thread" and it was a No/Go with this message. Error This upload failed. Used 40.12MB of your 40MB global upload quota (Max. single file size: 1000MB Edit-set up an album, uploaded a few pics and tried but couldn't figure out how to get image info to the "Browse" section for uploading. Hate to ask, but can anyone give a step by step so i don't mess things up?

Once you get to the point where landing a Starfighter is second nature, you should be tearing through the enemy! BTW-I've completed 22 missions!
