Winzip thing
Lt. James Cater replied to i fight by 1's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Not knowing anything about this stuff i got 7-zip via Column5 and it's been smooth sailing. I do agree with Spectre though, things are much easier dealing with Zips rather than RAR. -
Something About Shrikes and ARM's
Lt. James Cater replied to josefII's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I've yet to fly in WOI so i'm not familiar with any particular things specific to it as far as ARMs. The Shike has a range of about 15 miles depending on your altitude. Like was mentioned above, when SAM goes active line up with the site, go about 15 degress nose up and fire. Unless there is another radar near the target, it should be right on target. If lower and closer you can just put your pipper on the launch site and let loose. 2 variations on a tactic for WOV/WOE... The first is loading up on ARMs and sending your wingman after the target. Stay up and behind him and engage the sights as they become active. This can also be done via EricJs suggestion using Mavericks The second is sending the wingman in while remaining really high and behind at reduced throttle while studying the RHAW screen (if you have one) and radio traffic to determine the threats and when to engage. Using Standard ARMs you can engage at incredibly long ranges. In action i've hit from about 25 miles ,while in tests on the range 70 miles was acheived (IRL range was about 75 miles) -
Mexican Swine Flu claims first celebrity victim
Lt. James Cater replied to allenjb42's topic in The Pub
This might seem out of line but i don't see what all the fuss is about. In my crew at work we have a couple of African immigrants. In conversation i mentioned to one that i thought all the Flu panic was a joke. He agreed. When i mentioned Ebola, his facial reaction was like something out of a King horror novel. He damn near was cringing. Now, Ebola is what you call a real killer disease. Especially the Ebola Zaire strain. The thing has about a 90% kill ratio and there is pretty much not a damn thing medical science can do for you. He said "Ebola is death" As we talked you can imagine the things that were mentioned and what he remembered from back in Africa. Marburg, Lassa fever, Rift Valley fever, Yellow fever, Cholera, Malaria, etc, etc. He described going through an area that had a Cholera outbreak and just shook his head. "Lots and lots of really sick and dead people" We openly joke about what we see on TV and scoff at the doom and gloom types. -

Flak in WoV
Lt. James Cater replied to SandyC's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Personally, i wouldn't mind having to deal with near wall to wall AAA providing a hurricane of gunfire up in the vital areas of RP5 and 6. One big thing i did notice with your mod. I've was doing ACES OF NORTH VIETNAM recently and the low level flak has shot down a really noticible number of AI planes. -
Flak in WoV
Lt. James Cater replied to SandyC's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Around the HCM trail for most of the war you would have had everything but the 100mm stuff. In South Vietnam the 57mm was the largest but sorta rare. I'm out the door for work now. Let me hit the books in a few hours to confirm. -
Pragmatic Tactics...
Lt. James Cater posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I got to thinking about this since i started flying a Mig-21 in WOV mod recently. Forget about all the marketing fluff and propaganda nonsense. What is the the basic, tried and true way to achieve the best in a certain aircraft is the subject for discussion. I think this thread is better for Fighters rather than Bomber/Attack planes due to the more absract and sometimes arcane knowledge and skills that have to be employed at the moment of truth. I'll start off with the Mig-21.... After take off, stand it on it's tail and climb fast and high while asking for info concerning the target about every 30 seconds. After reaching an altitude at least 5000-10000 ft higher than the reported enemy, head out directly towards the incoming foe. While moving to an intercept point, keep asking for info until you get a visual. Let the enemy go by until it's beyond your 3-9 line, keeping in mind that you also have to take in the speed and altitude of the enemy aircraft as well as your wingmans' At the moment of decision, go full military power and roll the plane into an approach vector which should ideally be at the foes 6,7,or 8 o'clock by then. Now dive and let the speed build until your near(or) supersonic, meanwhile arming the missles. The best thing i have found is to dive lower than the the foe and close from a low position. Usually you will be able to blow by the escorts and reach a point where you can climb to both get the perfect missle envelope and to bleed off speed to prevent overunning the target. Get in within a mile and let fly! If you succeed or not the next step is always crucial...Turn towards your base and run like hell on full burner! Forget dogfighting...you are flying an Interceptor. Hit and Run is the way to stay alive. Be wary of enemies with radar guiding missles (most commonly the F-4) and always be aware of where you and the enemy are at until you are back on the ground. -
I wish i was just turning 30 again. ( Current age 41)

I'll give you points for honesty. But seriously, i probaly spend more money on beer when i'm partying than it costs to subscribe. Go for it and enjoy! -
I've been planning to start a thread about US education but..... I kid you not, if i had a company and hired all comers, there would be intelligence tests just for Americans. In my last few jobs i worked with both high schoolers and college kids and was amazed at the sheer ignorance and just plain dumbness. It really makes me worry about the future of this country.

No warning of SAM?
Lt. James Cater replied to i fight by 1's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Turning off your radar does not a damn thing. ECM Reduces the ability of SAM radars but you can still be locked if you get too far into their envelope and are flying predictable. -

Heavy Bombers vs. Placement

Seeing as they have the range ability, keep them as far to the rear as reasonably possible. -
Large Calibre AAA
Lt. James Cater replied to Piecemeal's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
All the tips, downloads and stuff has at least one really nice fringe benefit. I'm currently doing the (really difficult) ACES OF NORTH VIETNAM and i've noticed that the low level flak has shot down a considerably higher number of AI aircraft than the stock settings. Also, in my sideline WOV campaign, it's no cakewalk anymore in a pre SAM timeframe. The squadron has had serious damage from triple A on a few occasions. -
I remember seeing it on the news. It was one of the most gruesome things i've ever heard of to that point in time. Since then i've been pretty leery of large crowds whenever i've had to work around them.

Missle Performance Woes
Lt. James Cater posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
While doing the "Aces of North Vietnam campaign i keep running into an annoying occurrence. 1-Getting hit by Sparrows even though i'm skimming the ground and 2- My K-13s being completely ineffective outside of .8 of a mile despite the targets being straight and level. The first situation is a bummer because i have been in situations where no F-4 could have even distinguished me on radar from the ground clutter but still i'm locked and sometimes nailed. The second makes for a number of failed missions. I always figured on 1.2 miles being the perfect launch point but no joy. .8 is seemingly the max range for the K-13 to track properly enough to score a sure hit. I don't want to be either invunerable or unescapable, but it would be nice to get things a little more towards reality. Hints? -

At that speed and altitude you pretty much don't have to worry about SA8s. -

http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=8573 Here's Fubar's SAM trail mod. I've found that it does wonders for all missle trails!
