Where do they tend to congregate?, what are their favorite anchorages?, who are the notable players? what tribes are most into it? what is the dominant clan?, who are their allies ?, who are their enemies?, what operational routines? what is their most predictible trait?, how is the ransom processed, who processes the ransom?, where does the money end up?,who has the most money? ETC,etc, etc, etc. Those i came up with off the top of my head. You can imagine what else needs to be known before conducting certain operations. I've known and known of street level hitters that accumulated more info and carried out more successful strikes on their targets than our Government demands of their operators. If you intend to drop bodies, you better know who and what you are dealing with.

Let me guess, you've never bothered to get indepth info on your enemy before going out to engage them?

Mixed SAMs Problem

I know how you feel. I had the same sensation when i was doing missions for my WOV SAM map. -

Aerobatics kills
Lt. James Cater replied to scouserlad13's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I've had manuver kills, but not of the enemy. I'm currently doing a tour flying Intruders in Rolling Thunder and must have some of the most inept pilots in the whole US Navy. In 39 missions so far we've lost 5 aircraft. One to ground fire and no less than four via crashing. An early mission was the worst, within 2 minutes of beginning the attack my entire flight was gone. My wingman was lost to AAA and #3 and #4 crashed. Just yesterday another went into a bomb run, released weapons and promptly flew into the ground! -
As long as the targets only get hit, this is nothing to be alarmed at. You'd be amazed at how you can tolerate a certain amount of gunplay as long as no innocents get hit.

MULTIPLE INSTALLS...
Lt. James Cater posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I was just on the point of trying when i figured i should ask first. What i need to know before i go messing around with things...Is it possible to have multiple WO* installs on a single computer? i've heard that it is but i'd like to be sure first. And exactly how would one go about doing it? I have my ideas but am looking for other views. -
MULTIPLE INSTALLS...
Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Thanks for the assist Baltika! Between your response and searching a bit online i managed to get things right. For the longest i wondered what it would be like to fly as the North Vietnamese and so the "Aces Of North Vietnam" campaign is my first step. With my usual settings it seems quite difficult. So far the bane of my MIG-17A unit is the Crusader. Just can't avoid heavy losses to that plane!. Have to repect those Navy pukes. -

You don't need WINGS to fly a plane...

If i ever had an aircraft even a quarter damaged as that Scooter, it was done. -
Drop Tanks
Lt. James Cater replied to Stick's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
It all depends. I have in the past completed missions and never dropped tanks. Those occasions were intercepts where i knew i was not going to dogfight. Other than that i tend to wait until the range is noticibly close before punching them due to the desire to have every last bit of fuel before switching to internal tanks. -
Flak in WoV
Lt. James Cater replied to SandyC's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm at the same point also. At least something positive came out of it. Not only will going low and slow really get you killed using Jaegers MOD but the AI planes are in for a challenge as well with the new settings. -
Rolling Thunder '65
Lt. James Cater replied to Viper6's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
How i missed this thread i'll never know and i can't resist adding my 2 bits. As noted above the first SAMs were firing in 65 with 66 being the worst year for US losses overall. I'm currently flying an A-6 in Rolling Thunder and have yet to hear a launch warning even though i've been up in RP6 about 10 times or so and it's August 1965. I'm enjoying it while i can knowing that the easy times are soon to end. As for ECM pods i have a different view. From my experience it's made a noticible difference in coping with SAMs. From what i've seen, it' lessens the Fan Songs' tracking distance and so enables some gaps in certain areas where multiple site envelopes overlap. If you do have a RHAW equipped plane you can watch the scope and make a reasonable guess on what kind of radar is looking at you judging from where it's bearing is at the current moment. If you don't have RHAW you'll learn soon enough where SAM sites are and with experience, will be able to judge how close you can get before they launch at you. -
Flak in WoV

Jaeger, Thanks for the download and all. Added the hard MOD to WOV and went for a test flight over Vihn. The 100mm is a great improvement but i still was unscathed. The 57mm is incredible but i was still untouched. Getting really risky, i went low and slow and got positivly hosed by a 23mm gun. Insane! Got hit 30 times! you have to hand it to the Thud, any other plane would have blown up but the Thud stayed together until it slammed into the ground(LOL). I'll test it further at the 100mm shooting gallery NE of Than Hoa. Normally the flak there is akin to Germany in WW2. The next plane i want to fly is the A-1 and this will really up the ante! -
good luck with everything, hope you make it!

2 quick questions...
Lt. James Cater replied to shinobi2204's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Like was said above, get the Range MOD and practice! Also, learn the blast radius of different ordnance and experiment with things such as ripples and intervals and with range time you'll find out what height, speed and release point you'll need. Also keep in mind the differences between aircraft. For example, i consider myself a damn fine dive bomber in a Thud, but mediocre in an F-4. The handling in the dive just doesn't feel as smooth . Not to mention the A-1, accurate bombing in that bird is is virtually an art form when you are converting from fast movers. Before i forget, if in doubt don't hesitate to ask here. -
http://www.komonews.com/news/4785201.html Maybe society can get lucky and the cons will deal with the scum like they did to the one in the article. The trash didn't even make 6 months. I knew i guy who raped a four year old his mother was babysitting and was sent to the joint. They cut him loose after two years due to among other things, being so despised that he was even shanked while in PC. The results of multiple attacks was that he lost an eye and is permenantly paralyzed on half of his body.

Flak in WoV
Lt. James Cater replied to SandyC's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Hey Jaeger, I linked to your thread earlier. I have all the numbers down and am going to start on it after i get out of work. Only now can i figure on tackling WOV. (Comp finally running right) -

For WOE i'm sure that only a lucky hit will get me but the mod will devastate AI aircraft. For WOV i'm going to try The changes in the link i provided above and see what happens. Somewhere, somehow, there has to be a reasonable solution. -
Flak in WoV
Lt. James Cater replied to SandyC's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I finally got hit! After making about 7 passes going lower and slower each time i finally got fatally damaged. Didn't list what got me on the log but i suspect it was the 57mm stuff. Damn things really spit out the fire now! That was the first time EVER i've even as gotten scratched by something other than the light stuff. Still no joy with the 100mm, they're harmless. If anyone can think of something in the numbers, PM me and i'll try it out. Anyways, back to work. -
I have a book called "No Easy Days" by Douglas Keeny and William Butler. Page after page of pictures of some of the damndest carrier mishaps. These videos brought the book to mind in a heartbeat.

Flak in WoV
Lt. James Cater replied to SandyC's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Decided to do a little experimenting last night. I went to downloads and got the 1950s AA mod. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=5363 Followed the instructions except that i changed the years to allow me to fly certain aircraft. Took a Thud and made a beeline to where i knew a Soviet airbase was at. Lots and lots of flak at altitude but no hits so i decided to make things as easy as possible for the gunners. Despite making multiple passes in imitation of a clay pidgeon, i came out unscathed. I'll go back soon and try to see what i can find.
