Reminds me of when i was working in a department store. People would damn near kill each other in order to buy the latest insignificant POS.

Are flight sims going out of style?
Lt. James Cater replied to Emp_Palpatine's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
I was thinking something along the same lines for a while now. A few years ago i sorta got the feeling that gaming in general was "dumbing down". Ever go on Youtube and see some of the ACE COMBAT vids? Terrible for the most part but quite popular. I for one, cannot imagine anything like in a sim unless virtually everything is set on easy. -

Help with Ironhand missions WOV
Lt. James Cater replied to Bossco82's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
In certain areas you might want to bring in extra people loaded for bear with CBUs while you take on the SAMs. Take Haiphong, there are 4 SAM sites in close vicinity and a whole lot of triple A. Try to engage with the Starms from about 30-40 miles out and that'll give you some time to look over the situation and make some decisions. If you run out of missles and SAM is still online, find the Fan Song and order your wingman to attack it. In my last WOV campaign, i was using 2 flights of A-6s and believe me, they were knocking out plenty of priority targets on their own once i ordered them the engage ground. Want to see mayhem? Try 3 or 4 flights packing all the CBUs (Hell, pack Napalm or rockets if you have to) they can carry and let them loose about 2-4 miles from where you intend to get busy. -

F-111 Weapons Delivery...
Lt. James Cater posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
In WOV i was always wanting to fly the F-111 but never got around to it. So then comes ODS and here it is! I love everything about it except one small thing. The tactics i imagined using and practiced involved a very low level high speed attack using snakes. However, in ODS we only have 2000lbers and knowing just how dense the defenses are, i'm not really to anxious to try popping up to altitude high enough to have a go with these bombs after getting waxed by a SAM on my very first sortie doing just that. Advice anyone? Before i forget, can we use the Range with ODS? -
Funny thing about the Iphone... A friend of mine sent me one last September after getting back into regular commo after me being away and more or less out of touch with my family for the last 10 years. I looked at it, tossed it in a drawer and it's been there collecting dust ever since. Even my last cell phone, a cheap Motorola i picked up in a Walmart is collecting dust. I only use cell phones to get jobs and then toss them. Can't see the benefit of being leashed to the world 24/7/365 Just out of curiosity, perhaps i should hook up the Iphone and mess around with it for a month.

Which Do You Prefer?
Lt. James Cater replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Recently doing the fully patched, updated version of WOV and now ODS has brought me back full circle to mud moving. I spent quite a while flying A2A but there is just more of a feeling of satisfaction while coming off a successful bomb run. It's also the more stressful and high pressure role. Trying to make a tour in WOV in F-105s or A-6s or , as i am now trying, to do ODS in an F-111 is way more in depth than those times i spent flying F-100s, F-16s or F-15s. Things are a lot more critical now and the losses of squadronmates hurts more due to the fact that we must go deep into enemy territory to do our thing. In A2A sometimes missions were completed virtually within gliding distance of our bases. -
F-111 Weapons Delivery...
Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Made a successful first sortie in a new campaign yesterday. Had a tense encounter with a MIG25 while on the deck but shook him off, turned at IP and made my usual attack. Full military power, pop up to 1000ft at 5 miles, dropped all ordnance at 1.2 miles with a .60 setting and light up the burners and back to the deck for egress. Took a single 14.5 hit that i didn't even notice due to not pulling harder on the post drop turn, but that's life down below. KnX sent me his CCIP and so i'll soon give it a whirl but all is fine now. Thanks for the assist everyone! -
Damn, thats pretty impressive!

F-111 Weapons Delivery...
Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
My apologies to everyone at this site for wasting valuable time and space. As it turns out, the 2000lb bombs ARE high drag weapons. Idiot me has now learned to check armaments via test or around the web. It still didn't help me though, on my first sortie i went for alttitude and unfortunatly ended up on the leading edge of the incoming strike instead of behind the initial wall of fighters like it would have been best to do. Things got hairy up high with a MIG25 and a Mig23 firing at me so i decided to go down below. I was doing fine and headed for the IP when some MIGs came across me and engaged. I evaded their initial attacks but a MIG29 made a kill of me. Damn, this is one tough MOD! -

Sorry for a view but no info but this is way beyond my knowledge. I think you would have been a bit ticked off if i suggested that you make the best of what you got. -
F-111 Weapons Delivery...
Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
From what i've been able to get together from thinking about this during work... After coming in low and fast, a quick pullup on burner should be done to prevent too much speed from being lost in the climb. 3000-5000 should be tops, then nose down to get the pipper on the target while popping chaff and flares like mad. Weapons release and back down to the weeds to make a getaway. I'll just have to work out the combination of speed, height, angle and distance to ensure the bombs will be able to hit the target. As for snakes...my usual approach is from below 500ft at full military power. 5 miles from the target a quick pullup to 1000ft. Weapons release is 1.2miles with bombs at .60 delay. As soon as weapons are gone, back down to the weeds and get the hell out of Dodge. I'll be looking to see if i can pull off changing to a CCIP without screwing it all up. As for the Vietnam F-111s? IIRC, they had systems that were even more effective than the A-6. They surprised the hell out the North Vietnamese by making attacks in conditions that were considered impossible to fly in, much less hit a target. PS-Added Range and it does work with this MOD. Did a few practice runs using the above approach and all went well. I'm going to start a new campaign and report the results of the first sortie or two. -
F-111 Weapons Delivery...
Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'll think of something. Perhaps i should go high and throttle back to kill time and let some other strikes go into the target area some distance ahead of me. They ought to soak up the worst of the SAMs before i drop the nose and build up speed to approach at about 15000ft for a regular dive bomb attack. -
F-111 Weapons Delivery...
Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I got shot down while doing a dive bomb run. Came in low and fast, went full burner and began climbing for enough altitude to get a good look at the target and height enough for the bombs. Got nailed by an SA6 while in the dive. Dive tossing would work on runways and such but no way would it be effective for point targets. PS- My unit is not equipped with snakes. -
F-111 Weapons Delivery...
Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I have no problems delivering snakes, it's that my unit doesn't have them in the ODS campaign and i have to adapt to other weapons in a seriously high threat area. The weapons are 2000lb bombs and CBUs. -
F-111 Weapons Delivery...
Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I might have to practice it, that's why i wanted to know if the Range MOD will work with ODS. Exactly what distance and delay for the weapons is what i would need to find out. -
F-111 Weapons Delivery...

From what i've seen so far , HI-LO-LO-HI seems to work pretty well. It's pretty much like the Thud in Vietnam, once you get down below 500ft at full throttle nothing is going to catch you unless it makes a perfect bounce. -
F-100 vs MiG-17 strategy
Lt. James Cater replied to KingLear's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
In one notable Vietnam dogfight, an A-6 driver managed to setup a -17 for a kill by going full throttle and outrolling the MIG whenever it was in a position to fire. The A-6 finally got a break call and the MIG couldn't follow because of it's stiff high speed controls. An F-4 smoked the MIG a few seconds later. -
DS Mod Goodies
Lt. James Cater replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Once again let me give thanks to all involved that made this MOD happen It took forever to download but it was certainly worth the wait! After doing two test flights in an F-117 and one in an F-111 i'm ready to go into action. When i'm safely egressing i like to F6 and check things out. The greatest thing i've seen in a while is watching an FNG Tomcat driver using guns on an Iraqi MIG 23 that was definetly on the defensive. Despite having the MIG saddled perfectly the FNG couldn't connect and ran out of ammo. As he broke to one side the MIG broke to the other and it seemed like that was it. However, about 10 seconds later a Hornet came zooming in from 7High and gunned the MIG down with with a minimum of fuss. One of the easiest kills i've ever witnessed. -
F-100 vs MiG-17 strategy
Lt. James Cater replied to KingLear's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm pretty sure just about everyone here knows of John Boyd. "40 second Boyd" was without question the greatest dogfighter ever to handle a Hun and took the aircraft past it's performance and design specs on a daily basis. His approach was what the Navy did with the F-4 in the late Vietnam era. Know what the edge is and push it further, and always keep your energy up and the enemies down. -

DONOTTURNWITHTHEMIGDONOTTURNWITHTHEMIGDONOTTURNWITHTHEMIGDONOTTURNWITHTHEMIGDONOTTURNWITHTHEMIGDONOTTURNWITHTHEMIGDONOTTURNWITHTHEMIGDONOTTURNWITHTHEMIG! Dealing with Mig-17s in a Hun means using vert for all that it's worth. If you do turn with one by all means think of what you'll do if you can't saddle the MIG within 10 seconds. Any longer and you'll bleed enough speed to make you a potential statistic. Either hit the burners and go up or point the nose down and slam the throttle so you can get enough energy and distance to allow you to re-engage -

Now That the DS Mod is Out...
Lt. James Cater replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
This morning i finished downloading ODS and decided to give it a whirl. Exactly one F-117 practice mission and i'm totally sold. To everyone out there, GIVE! ODS is the final straw. If you don't contribute because of this great module (To use the old RPG term) i doubt you ever will. Give something! I'm not rich by a damn sight but i know what i have taken advantage of. The work of those who do what i am not capable of, making all these great things for download. GIVE SOMETHING!
