WOV Essentials
Lt. James Cater replied to Viggen's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I've been thinking a lot about doing Spads after i read one pilots book of his experiences over the Ho Chi Mihn trail in one. But T-28s? I can't see a long life ahead for someone deliberatly going low and slow over AAA infested areas. -
I never once did any FS. But now i'm tempted to go and search for the perfect setup for my comp just so i can do something to spite M$. (Revenge of the Mechwarrior!)

Help with Combat in SF2
Lt. James Cater replied to Malkuth's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I've read countless books on the Vietnam war and pored over endless materials about the weaponry and tactics involved. The only two aircraft that had any kind of accuracy with auto weapons release were the A-6 and F-111. EVERY other plane did bombing the traditional way. At this moment i'm re-reading "When Thunder Rolled" by Ed Rasmius for the Lord knows how many time. In the book his flight does a COMBAT SKYSPOT mission in which the bombs hit 2 MILES from their intended target. Virtually all other bombing in the book is done stuka style. General Chuck Horner in "Every Man A Tiger" tears apart Loran aided bombing. It quite simply never worked as advertised. -
WOV Essentials

I just began a new campign in WOV using my updated(new HD and Nvidia drivers) near stock T-3120 and things are so different from the stock version it might as well be another sim altogether. For starters i made a clean install, and added (in order) the 5/15/06 service pack, the September 2008 update, and the October 2008b update. The Bombing Range terrain mod came next, followed by Nato fighters 1 and 2. Like i said above, it's virtually a whole new thing. About the only thing i want to do is tweak the 57mm and 100mm guns to be more accurate and i'm satisfied. My FPS suffers a bit on massive CBU dumps and i'm working on getting a little better object detail but that's minor league concerns. The improvement to gameplay is such an advance you will wonder how anyone can fly unpatched. Inspired by the FOTI thread, i'm now engaged on a Rolling Thunder tour in an A-6. BTW, first i flew a Thud but got shot down by groundfire on my second mission. -
'realistic' ground attack pass speeds / parameters?
Lt. James Cater replied to MetalMania's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Here's what i worked out for high drag delivery. Depending on how bad the defenses are i begin my approach at 15-20 miles. From altitude i line up with the target and get my aircraft at full military power at 100-450ft. 150-250ft is best. 5 miles from the target i pull the nose up sharply and level off from 950-1000ft. The ordnance is released 1.3 miles from the target with a 100ms delay setting. Once the target is overflown the aircraft is taken back down to the deck until a safe distance has been established to allow a climb to altitude. You should be able to hit building sized targets with no problem. I've had success with it using F-4s and F-16s. I'm pretty certain the difference between a number of high performance aircraft is minimal. -
Point of Interest To the Thirdwire Community
Lt. James Cater replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The reactions of the typical idiots always gets the same response from me..."Dude, you ain't paying a dime for it" If you don't like it, don't use it. It really reminds me of all the hassles over at MEKTEK when they released the first Mechpaks. -
By growling vocals if you mean Arch Enemy i'm already there! Sinister had a female growler for a period also. Evaescence is a band i can't stand from the start. They rank in the upper reaches of my "hell no" list. Within Temptation is a name i've seen before. Guess i'll investigate. Sister Sin i've never heard of. Now that i think about it, Twisted Tower Dire has been around for some years now. I'll check them out later.

For some reason i could never really immerse myself in this genre. About as far as i could reasonably take symphonic elements is IX Equalibrium by Emperor. In the past few months i've been sorta dipping the toe into the water. Nightwish is a usual band to start with and i'm really a fan of good female vocals. Any hints?

Flight of the Intruder
Lt. James Cater replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
When i first saw the movie i was really disappointed. In time i grew greatly disappointed! As of now the final scenes still kill me and i can only bear certain parts of the movie. BTW, I was thinking about it ,but just from this thread i decided (After my Thud was shot down on the second mission) to do an A-6 tour in WOV. As of this writing i have two missions done. -

Heed Fubar512's info concerning the Aim-7. Going boresight works, but you have to be too close for comfort in certain situations. For bombing lots of practice is the key, there's no way around it. However, sometimes inacuraccy can be beneficial. You can frequently knock out a number of tanks or vehicles even if you never destroy your intended target. Being area weapons, they cover a lot of ground and long and short ordnance drops often get results. -
Flight of the Intruder
Lt. James Cater replied to Stratos's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
"Flight Of The Intruder"...One of my all time favorite books. Lord knows how many copies of it i had throughout the years. In my storage unit i probaly have about 5 copies! A really great trilogy is "Termite Hill, Lucky's Bridge", and "Tango Uniform" by Tom Wilson. If you want the lowdown on flying Thuds and doing Weasel work, the books are virtually impossible to beat in the genre of Vietnam fiction. Scooter pilots have a winner in "Ghostrider One" Everything you want about carrier ops in the A4 is in the book. -
Keeping Campaign Going...
Lt. James Cater posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I seem to be a bit stuck. A while ago something happened and i couldn't countinue with my WOE campign due to some sort of bug. Since that time i fully repaired my main computer and did a full install of WOE including every patch and update as well as The Range and NF1 and 2. What i'm having problems with is transfering my pilot data and campaign from the old to new install. Has anyone else done this? Is it possible? I've done a few experiments and they all came up with nothing. I've really gotten deeply attached to the campign and would rather not just abandon it and move onto other things. As i am typing this i'm thinking of moving the new pilot data folder to a flash drive and copying my old one and seeing if that will work. Any Ideas? -

Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
To anyone new to these sims. If something really seems wrong, just forget about it and start over unless you REALLY know what you are doing. My screwing around with the pilot and campaign data rendered my new WOE install useless and so now i have to spend time reinstalling everything. As far as i'm concerned, i'm considering the campign a victory! -

From what i see, it looks like my file got corrupted and so that is it! :fuk: That's too damn bad because it was a hell of campaign. It was the 79 campaign and really something. Guess i'll have to start it again. I want to finish it before doing ODS and then going back to WOV and flying a full Rolling Thunder tour in a Thud. -
I guess i've been sorta lucky in the places i've lived throughout my life. For the most parts it's been some really crappy areas. Like the last place, North Las Vegas, better known as Northtown. Straight barrio, ghetto, hood, whatever. Pure S**thole without a doubt. With only two saving graces. The legendarily brutal Police who seemingly live to beat the crap out of pests like those described above. "Rights of the criminal" usually means the right to an a**kicking if they think you warrant it. Get really annoying and they'll probaly kill you. In the Las Vegas area a cop hasn't been found guilty of a killing in over 100 years. The fact that you can pretty much get away with anything if you are a relatively straight citizen and are defending youself against crime is the other grace. "If you find him there, leave him there" is the attitude towards house burglars. No one really cares if you kill a punk on your property or in self-defense while out in public. A Wild West view still predominates here and "justice" tends to be pretty harsh. Rapists for example, are smart to keep their mouth shut while in the Tank because they will get stomped by other inmates. Last April i spent a week locked up on a battery charge(I walked, they bought my story) and was thankful that it was a "righteous" crime i committed. If i was a Rapo or Shorteyes i would have had to be in solitary for my own protection. The guards won't exactly be in a hurry to find out who dealt with you.

Taking in everything from the Reserves to a brief stint as RA to the National Guard with periods in IRR in between , i belonged to Uncle Sam from 1985 to 1992. If they would ask me back i'd go without a seconds hesitation.

Something Really Really Big?
Lt. James Cater replied to Anthony W.'s topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Trying not to hijack the thread. My priorities are as follows...1-Hitting the target, 2-Getting my wingmen out alive, 3-Getting myself out alive. All things considered, collateral damage is probaly number 100 out of 100 things i have to worry about in the course of a typical mission. -
Sometime tommorrow i'm going to start work on repairing my E-machines T-3120. I've gotten a new hard drive (WD Caviar Blue 320GB) for it and replacing it is pretty much cut and dried. What's bugging me is replacing the PSU. Since E-machines is infamous for it's lousy PSUs, i figured i might as well replace it too. The one thing that is making me wonder is the cable disconnect step. I understand removing the power cable from the PSU. After all, you are replacing it. What i don't get is why you have to disconnect the cables from every point in the PC. You know...Motherboard, DVD player, etc, etc. Why not just leave them connected while replacing the PSU?

PSU Replacement Question.
Lt. James Cater replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Hardware/Software Chat
If i had a fancier setup i would get a modular PSU. But for a stock E-machines? I really don't think so. -
I'm really getting ticked off now. Yesterday i replaced the hard drive in my main comp (E-machines T-3120) and earlier today i used the recovery cd to reinstall windows. About the only other thing to get it going was putting in the ethernet and audio drivers and it was as good as new. The problem began after i loaded various games. Turns out i can't do a single one because Directx9 ca'nt be found. WTF? Doesn't WOV and WOE load it? So i went to M$ and they are pushing Directx10 so 9 is not in an easy to download situation. I downloaded a bunch of stuff but nothing worked so i got rid if it all. I went to outside sources but still the same thing. Cannot do even the simplest game. Before the problems this comp never gave me a hassle in it's stock state. Can anyone clue me in as to how to get Directx9 in a one shot download and run situation? Or perhaps i should do a comeplete reinstall of XP? As soon as i'm done here i'm going to remove every single thing i set up earlier.

As it turns out, i got DXDIAG about an hour after i last posted yesterday. The root of the matter was that i had no video driver. I went to E-machines and no matter what i couldn't get the thing installed. So this morning after i got out of work i tried again. Still no joy. After looking around a bit i remembered Driver Dectective and went there. A few minutes with the debit card and not only did i have a driver, but a souped up one that totally had me lost. After i got to my usual 960x600 resolution i was ticked again. Letters looked all blurry and there wasn't much i could do fiddling with the monitor (AcerX203h,20in.) So i finally got around to loading WOE and things went really well. I jumped into instant action and paused it so i could look around at the details. GREAT!!! Way better than the Dell and miles better than i remember using the stock driver. I noted the resolution used and adjusted to it so i can post this without getting a headache. Since the the T-3120 is purely for gaming needing the usual isn't neccesary(sic), the Dell will be for internet stuff. On Friday i'm getting a rig that will let me hook them both up into the same keyboard/monitor setup and it's a whole new world for me. Thanks 169th Prophet and Fubar for the assist!

If you think or already purchase Seagate hard disk .....

Like i posted above, i never had a single problem with mine until a few months ago. As soon as i solve the DirectX9 problem, i'm in business. -

What model? I have a T-3120. We E-Machine users get absolutly no respect from anyone! I could imagine the faces of the comp snobs if i tell them the best online gaming experience i ever had over a extended period was on a GQ computer!
