DS Mod Goodies
gbnavy61 replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Is there some kind of NVGs simulated for night missions? I don't know if NVGs were much in use for Gulf War I, off the top of my head. I ask because it would be a neat feature, especially if it could be duplicated without the whole DS mod. Also, I don't own WOE so I can't check for myself - pretty sure this is a WOE-only mod. -
My Projects (EricJ)

Eric and Team, Although it is still a lousy bug and will never, I say again, NEVER be cooler than a Tomcat - you guys are doing an excellent job. I look forward to flying this puppy when it's completed. Hard to tell from the images here, but on the original 18F model, the ass end looked a little too small proportionally to the rest of the jet. Has this been adjusted? Also, I was wondering about the speed brakes - you guys have probably done more research than I - but, are those two little spoilers that pop up on the upper part of the fuselage the only speed brakes? I was under the impression that the tail surfaces all moved in conjunction to produce more drag (i.e. both rudders turn inward, and both stabs droop). Mind you, that is based on something I experienced in another game which may not be accurate. In any case, keep up the good work fellas. -

I was pulling for the Cards, but they didn't earn it. Too many penalties and they got a break on one call - can't remember which, but they scored off of it. Steelers were the better team, but I was less than impressed when they started taking some cheap shots towards the end. I thought they could have won with a little more class - not the whole team, but a couple individuals. Anyway, it's over. Congrats Steelers and Steeler fans. (For next season) GO BEARS!

I don't know about Star Trek being more fantasy. I mean, sure you have alien beings with powers that are beyond humans, or what we understand, but how is that much different than The Force, or Jedi? Strange devices? What about lightsabers and hyperdrives? Space stations the size of small moons that can destroy planets? Seems at least as fanciful to me. I admit that techno-babble is overused at times as a way to save the Enterprise. Also, it does seem a little odd that only her crew seems to be able to stop these many malevolent aliens - but let's face it, they are the main characters. It'd be a boring episode if the Big-E showed up to a planet with an angry super-alien, only to find that the crew of another starship had been there and taken care of things. "Captain's Log: I'm...not sure...what to do...for the next...forty minutes. Spock...can't...think of anything...either." Oh, eraser, you can't keep Natalie Portman (yum) without the rest of those 3 lousy movies. It's against the rules. That's like me saying, "Oh, we'll only count the good episodes of Trek." (And before anyone is a smart-arse: yes, there were plenty of good ones.) And as far as attractive ladies, Star Wars has Padme Amidala (yes, solid points for her) and a bikini-clad Princess Leia. Kirk had a new lady virtually every episode - many that were pretty hot in their day. Has Famke Janssen ever visited your starship and fallen for your older, bald, yet charming and sophisticated captain (Picard FTW)? Nope. Do Star Wars ship captains keep ladies on the bridge whose only purpose is to state the obvious and look good? Don't think so. I'd just like to say two words: Jadzia Dax. (Worf is the Man!) Just sayin'.

Don't really remember. Probably, involved me needing to get Crusaders and Tomcats from somewhere.

I enjoy both Star Trek and Star Wars, but given the choice I'd probably watch Trek. Star Trek gives you a lot more to pick from - 10 movies and hundreds of episodes. Yeah, it can be repetitive at times. It also has a good number of episodes (perhaps a few movies) that are stinkers. However, on the whole there are a bunch of "classic" episodes - well written and acted. The tech is fanciful, but there is enough reality mixed in to make it seem like such things aren't far off. Star Trek appeals to me more because of the characters. The relationships between the characters have been (and should be) integral to the series. The Kirk, Spock, McCoy trio is a classic example. McCoy is the passionate, human perspective; Spock is the clear reasoning of logic. Kirk, is the balance of the two. He takes counsel from both and makes the best decision he can weighing both sides. And that's just to succeed in the mission. Other times, Kirk and McCoy can sit over a drink and discuss philosophy and psychology as relates to themselves and the crew. Any time the crap hits the fan, Spock knows what's going on and he's always ready to work with Kirk to get out of a jam - usually without Kirk having to say a word. It's like that one saying "A friend will bail you out of jail, a best friend will be sitting in there with you." Kirk and Spock are always in the cell together trying to break out. TNG was what I grew up watching, so it's always got a special place for me, not that it wasn't a really good show in its own right. DS9 was the grittiest Star Trek and I enjoyed it immensely. It was interesting to see the characters portrayed in such a "human" fashion. Whereas TOS and TNG largely showed the better parts of humanity, DS9 often got into the skeletons in our closets. It put them in situations where characters faced the tough choices and they didn't always choose what was right. They made mistakes. And usually they paid for them - if not to others, than to themselves and their own consciences. Voyager, I could take or leave - mostly leave. Got a little too ridiculous in my opinion. For example, the Borg were this nearly unbeatable foe - except when that one-in-a-million opportunity arrived. But, little Voyager, all on her own, whooped the Borg routinely. Didn't watch much of that series. Enterprise, was a touchy thing. I didn't like the prequel idea because the writers had to be awfully careful of what had already been established. They often weren't, and that bugged me and a lot of others. But, I gave it a second chance and watched almost all four seasons and, on the whole, enjoyed them. Star Wars was really good, too. At least, if we're talking about A New Hope - Return of the Jedi. Classic sci-fi. I got to see the original Star Wars in the theater when the released the special edition. It was an experience. Sure I knew what was coming, but I almost got to experience it was my parents did when it was first released. Seeing the Star Destroyer come over the top of the screen in the first scene was impressive. Luke was the teenage dweeb who would go on to be great. Han was the coolest guy with the hottest ride, and who wouldn't want a rather tall Wookie as a body guard/buddy. Darth Vader was a badass - head-to-toe in black armor with a glowing red sword, could kill people just by thinking about it. Obi-wan was a scholarly sage who could still kick a little ass. Yoda was the font of Jedi wisdom, in muppet form, but surprisingly believable. And the Emperor was pure evil. It was a great story. Then, in a quest for more money, Episodes I - III came out. Yoda was Grover from Sesame Street. Anakin went from being a little annoying shart, to a teenage bitch (Nobody let's me play Jedi!) - forever damaging the image of Darth Vader (more like Darth Vagina). Jedi sucked at detecting disturbances in the force - the most evil guy alive was like 10 feet away at times. Jedi were weak, but plentiful. Everything that could be, was CG. Overall, it was a lame time ago, in a galaxy not far enough away. The only redeeming things about the prequels were: Liam Neeson (who they killed off before the end of the first movie), Darth Maul, and a scantily clad Natalie Portman (A secluded, Naboo getaway? I'm in!). Oh, and Firefly was excellent. I wish there were more than one season. That show was great. Can't say enough good about it.

How do you use LGB's?
gbnavy61 replied to MetalMania's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yeah, changing the nation name to match up with the attachment type should fix that problem. Duh, stupid me, of course missing .lods would make those weapons invisible. You could try editing the modelname but now you're getting into unfamiliar territory for me. If I were you, I'd look around the downloads section for the pods you want. Most likely they are available. -
What is a good effects pack to go with the CA weps pack? I am seeing a lot of the explosions, but nothing for such things as fuel-air bombs, nukes, and smoke rockets (i.e. green, red, etc.).

New Squadrons in WoI Problem
gbnavy61 replied to JonathanRL's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
Yeah, it worked out nicely. Finished the campaign last week. I played around with the mission probabilities because I kept getting strike missions - the F-8 is a fighter not a bomber, so I shifted things more in favor of recce, CAPs, and fighter sweeps. Was a good time, though. Ended up with 19 kills, most with cannons, but I actually had a bit of luck with the AIM-9Bs. Lost a couple pilots, but most of the squadron had a couple A-A kills by the end. -

How do you use LGB's?
gbnavy61 replied to MetalMania's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
It could be that there is a missing .lod or .ini file for the pods you are looking for, but I doubt it. Since you are using a weapons pack, it should have all the necessary files included. Loadout.ini's are just for the default weapons when you get assigned/choose a particular mission. If they're not there, they don't hurt anything - you just might have to load up your whole flight of 8 manually. Yes, I was refering to (your aircraft here)_data.ini - so FA-18_data.ini or some such, not literally a file called "aircraftdata." They would be enabled by editing the particular weapon station you want to mount them on and under the allowed wepaon class, making the appropriate entry for the desired targeting pod (LP). So, like you have already done. Check the KB for the proper codes for different weapon types. It's in there somewhere. For editing the weaponsdata.ini, it has only worked for me when I have used the weapons editor. If adding a new weapon, open the .ini file with Notepad and type/copy in the entry - making sure to number it as the next number weapon in sequence. Save and close. Then, open weaponsdata.ini with the Weps Editor and select your new addition. Open it and check the info is accurate. Save and close. Should appear in game now. Another thing you can check is the "allowed mass" on the weapon station and compare that with the mass of the targeting pod you're trying to load up. Sometimes, the stations are only allowed to support the mass of a missile, which could be less than the mass of the pod you want to mount (i.e. the pod is "too heavy"). Manually adjust the allowed mass so that it can support the pod. Let us know how you fare. -

Thought I followed the directions, but I still only see smoking planes - no burning. Thought I saw the little 2D guy once, but I've never seen a seat fire out of any jet. -

Nice job, server. Tecumseh, good use of the A/B man. I haven't ignited any tents, but I did intimidate a couple MiGs into the deck during my F-8 campaign over Israel. No points for the kill either. I call BS. -
Call the Ball
gbnavy61 replied to gbnavy61's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Well, at the ship, you actually do change the glidepath a little by tilting the lens. The LSO's aren't actually waving the plane to the deck, they're waving the hook to the wires. Hook-to-eye distance changes from plane to plane (i.e. hook to pilot's eyeball) so the lens has to be adjusted to get the hook to the same height above the ramp. Perhaps Typhoid or one of the other Navy dudes could explain better, fyi purposes. In any case, I think that we'll have to make due with a one-size-fits-all set up at the boat as the alternative is probably way too complicated. -

I'm surprised you stayed with it for a whole minute. If I end up on fire, I've learned the hard way not to temp fate. I delayed a few seconds on a flight a few days ago and my Crusader exploded w/ me.
