New System/system upgrade
Rugbyfan1972 replied to Rugbyfan1972's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
All, Thank you for your help, although rereading my post I should have been clearer,I have already looked at purchasing a 9800GT, only to discover that my machinesmotherboard only supports PCI-E version 1 whereas the 9800 is PCI-E 2, andwhile my machine will run that graphics card I will not get the full potentialout of it. That is the reason why I had decided to go the "whole hog" and buy anew machine or at least a new motherboard as I am led to believe that an AM3motherboard will not support my present CPU, which I already know is a dualcore one, I also had decided to buy the best I can in CPU to complement thegraphics card I intend buying. I am also looking to play modern games as well with Deus Ex 3 being high on mylist of priorities. My present Motherboard is a Gigabyte M61SME-S2L I could go with an AMD dual core running at 3.10Ghz, but as my present one isrunning at 3Ghz it seems a waste of money. Does anyone having viewed the above have any other recommendations/suggestions. Uncleal, thanks for the link to PC Wizard and the advice regarding vista. The i7 processors in England are not that cheap, the cheapest I can find frommy local computer shop is the Intel Core i7 920 (4 x 2.66Ghz) costing £274.95with the cheaper of the two motherboards being the Intel Core i7 920 (4 x2.66Ghz) costing £166.95, if I went for the 2nd of the 3 i7 CPUs IntelCore i7 920 (4 x 2.66Ghz) it would cost me £520.95 the most expensive i7 the IntelCore i7 Extreme Ed' 975 (4 x 3.33Ghz) costs £929.95 which is more than the systemthat I had listed in my first post costs in total. -

Olham, You are right it does give you goosebumps, but the one that really stuck in my mind was on RB3D when you shot a plane down at low level, and you saw the pilot jump out and heard a blood curdling scream followed by a meaty splat as he hit the ground. Thanks Rugbyfan1972 -

Uncleal & Red DOg, Reading No Parachute by Arthur Lee Gould, in the last paragraph he discusses the reason the BE2 line were in front line usage for so long, from memory it is that someone on the air board at the government was also a director at the Royal Aircraft Factory (it is nice to know that some things never change). Lou, Albert ball is reported to have used the sliding feature of the lewis on the foster mount to attack EA from below while flying a nupe 17, after discovering that with a slight side pressure on the stock the gun could in effect be held at an 80 degreee angle. Thanks Rugbyfan1972 -
Check Six, I always thought it was a .303 bullet that killed MVR as opposed to Roy Brown (209 Squadron) or Cecil Popkin (Aussie Machine Gunner? OVS, I have killed plenty of camels, attempting to fly one is usually a good way of killing it (and my pilot). Thanks Rugbyfan1972

Rugbyfan1972 replied to Schnitzel von Krumm's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Shredward, I am saying that it should be a level playing field for all the aces, its probably easiest for me to single out Bishop as his is the most well known case, that I know of. I am not bashing Bishop as I have the utmost respect any pilot who has flown in combat pre air to air missile days and come out an ace or survived to tell the tale I am actually having a go at the statisticians who cannot be in my eyes consistent in their approach, I have seen books where Mannock is listed as having 61 victories and others where he is listed as having 73 victories, in fact if you read under the guns of the red baron, which I believe you have in your vast collection he is credited with shooting down a DH2 which he last saw spinning down into cloud at low level, if you then read Flying Fury you will find that one of the passages in the book fits the time, place and description of the kill that MVR has claimed, and which was in fact flown by James McCudden. I was also having a slight fish to see which canucks would 'bite', as well as my mischievious side coming out. I like your answer it was well thought out and I agree with you in that we should give them some peace. Also as an unexpected bonus Olham has learnt a new english word, I just wish my german was as good as his english, my german starts and ends with "eine gross biere bitte" assuming I spelt that right. Olham, I see you are perpetrating the myth that Billy Bishop was the highest scoring British and Commonwealth pilot of WW1, I have just checked on The Aerodrome on the aces listing for Bishop and printed off the claims that he made, it makes interesting reading. Of the 72 victories that he claimed under the heading flying (basically meaning witnesses in my eyes) the following are recorded: Victories Flying (witnesses) 23 Alone 5 Alone? 2 By himself 1 Again by himself 2 Apparently by himself 2 Separated from patrol 7 No combat report available Now being generous and giving him the 7 victories where no combat report has been found that still leaves 35 dubious claims, even if I am again generous and allow half of those claims it still only gives him 54 victories. I feel that if Bishop is given credit for all the claims that he made than Mannock should be given credit as was the case at the time for any kill that he shared with as yet unblooded members of his flight/squadron, in which case I am inclined to believe the 73 claimed by Ira 'Taffy' Jones as it has the evidence of pilots who he gave those kills to (in fact insisted that he had played no part in bringing the 2 seater being claimed down). We also have the evidence of 85 squadron who were at an all time low when Mannock took over command from the previous commander, who had a penchant for 'lone wolf' flights and had allowed the squadron to hit rock bottom morale wise, the commanders name Billy Bishop. I rest my case. I realise this will probably generate a debate, but that is partly my intention to see what other people think. Oh, by the way I am a Mannock fan, and I have found no other ace on the Aerodrome forum who has his victories listed along with the german losses for that date and location. -
Current Status - Super Patch
Rugbyfan1972 replied to Winder's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Winder, I should have read what I typed before posting it, I meant you have released at least 10 patches, some of which have fixed minor bugs, and the rest of which have improved the gameplay, i.e. the patch where you fixed aircraft that had been shot down looking like they were just gliding earthwards without any major damage. Thanks Rugbyfan1972 -
Current Status - Super Patch
Rugbyfan1972 replied to Winder's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Winder, While as you say it will not make this patch, the way you guys are supporting and churning out patches to rectify any minor problem (at least 10 that I can think of since the game came out in mid January), it will not be long before this problem is rectified. My feeling is that you will add it into the aircraft packs that you are working on. Not many other software manufacturers give this level of support to a program that was (in my eyes) pretty darn perfect when released. Thanks Rugbyfan9172 -

Olham, If it was Goering, he has slimmed down a lot, and gone cold turkey, that looked a relatively sane and slim animal in the video. Thanks Rugbyfan1972 -
I find it odd in a way that those that refused to talk about the war earlier in their lives have turned out to be the longest living survivors from the conflict. I personally am happy that both Harry Patch and Henry Allingham after hearing about Harry Patch's book have both had their memoirs (or should it be autobiographies) written. Both of which are well worth reading. I am glad also that he was around for the 90th anniversary of the RAF. May he rest in peace.

What Does Your Cockpit Look Like?
Rugbyfan1972 replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I am also a lefty, although when I started using a computer with a mouse (it was 1994 and the first time I encountered windows) I did'nt realise that you could set a mouse up for either left or right handedness, I guess I had just got used to the right handed bias in the UK, also both my parents who were also using the computer are right handed (in fact my dad is the only male on his side of the family who is right handed) The result is I use the mouse in my left hand but with a right handed button configuration, the few times I have tried using one set up for a left hander it has annoyed me so much I switch back to the right handed configuration. Mr Lucky or UKW, Could either of you please post the link to the RTW Napoleon II mod. Thanks Rugbyfan1972 -
I can see both sides of the argument re polishing the airframe or using mechanical knowledge to improve performance. I know that in WW2 the allies found a highly polished aircraft would add just enough speed to enable the typhoon to catch the V1 (it also had as many drag inducing excrescences ie rivets were ground/beaten flat to the airframe). So on that basis I can understand Robert Little's claim about polishing the aircraft. James McCudden had originally trained as a mechanic and so was able to tinker with his engine i.e. using a set of high compression pistons and placing the spinner from an LVG that he had shot down on the nose of his SE5a, although McCudden's primary aim was to enable him to attain a high enough altitude to attack the high altitude recon aircraft. I am not sure what level of mechanical knowledge Robert Little had, perhaps the person who posted about writing a book on Little could enlighten me/the rest of the forum. Apologies for any misspelt words, but it is 4am in england and my brain is half asleep. Thanks Rugbyfan1972

Does P4 get it's own name?
Rugbyfan1972 replied to Hellshade's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
While you are all suggesting new names for P4, I have another question will P4 have a new engine or will it still be CFS3 based. I don't have a problem with CFS3 with BHAH installed (CFS3 on its own is another matter), I just remember reading a while back (possibly on the SOH forum) that the developers were at some point going to break away from CFS and design their own engine for OFF and wondered if we will get that as soon as P4. OT: Der Rote Baron - is there an english version out there?
Rugbyfan1972 replied to Balalaika's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
OVS, I knew and agree the point you were making, I was just saying someone with the flying skill to stay alive for that long in an inferior plane in a dogfight was in my opinion a hell of a pilot and in an aircraft that was more equal to the one MVR was flying would have probably shot MVR down or at the worst escaped with his life. I have not seen the film, so cannot comment but when you pointed out that it had Hawker in an SE5a and not a DH2, it made me immediately think of Aces High where a Fokker Eindekker is shot down over the lines in 1917. I always find that a very surreal sequence in Aces High. Some day I may watch Der Rote Baron, if it ever becomes widely available in english, but all the reports I have heard about it make me feel it trivialises the man and his opponents. I also am like you in that I read just about anything I can lay my hands on with regards to WW1, namely history books admittedly, although I do have an original copy of the full "Wipers Times" private eye style trench newspaper, which I would highly recommend as a good read to anyone who likes their humour a little on the dark side. Thanks Rugbyfan1972 -

Rugbyfan1972 replied to Balalaika's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hawker would have probably won that battle in an SE5a, even if MVR was flying the DR1. Although you have to wonder how the aircraft would have evolved if the SE5a had been operational in November 1916, Bloody April would not have happened for starters. Thanks Rugbyfan1972 -

Some "Blue Max" movie info ...,
Rugbyfan1972 replied to Womenfly2's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
WF2, Not sure if this will interest you, but one of the motorcyclists in "the blue max" is the dad of a friend of mine, and is still very much alive (George Quaile), although I have had a quick look at the cast and have not been able to find the motorcyclists listed on IMDB, although I have found that the movie was shot in Ireland which would tie in with his dad. I would be interested if anyone could supply a list of the Motorcyclists in the film, as at this time of night (2340 in England) I can't be bothered playing the DVD just to watch the credits, perhaps tomorrow during the day. If you are interested I can email him and see if he has any memories of the movie and the main actors? Thanks Rugbyfan1972 -

Hauksbee, If you read "High in the empty Blue" by Alex Revell which is incidentally an excellent history of 56 squadron in WW1 Voss sent Cronyn out of the fight with a badly shot up SE5a and Muspratt out with a bullet in his radiator, I personally would count that as proof that Voss put 2 SE5A's out of the fight, I understand why you are sceptical about the history channel, but on this occasion they are right. OVS, you have forgotten to include Mannock in your list of aces who were better than MVR, consider the facts, Mannock had a defective eye and thus had no real depth perception compared to other pilots, he also looked after his flight, he was apparently a devil for an opposing pilot to shake off when he was pursuing them (admittedly this may be a bit of hero worship from Ira 'Taffy' Jones). Thanks Rugbyfan1972 -

Hasse WInd, The reason they changed their name was because of a german bomber the Gotha, although the anti-german public destroying the property of anyone with a german sounding name may have helped somewhat. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
