  1. Lest We Forget...

Slartibartfast, That is a fine choice for today of all days, especially when you realise (as I am sure some of you already know), that Wilfred Owen was killed on the 4th November 1918, and his parents received the telegram notifying them of his death on the 11th November 1918. As the story goes the boy delivering the telegram knocked on the door just before 11am. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  2. The Fighting around Thiepval

Olham, Part of the reason that the germans survived that bombardment was that they were in dugouts that were 20-30 metres underground and in at least some cases lined with concrete, only a direct hit could have destroyed them. Also those parts of the wire that were cut by special teams of troops during the nights preceding the attack were marked with white tape so the attacking british troops could see them easily - well guess what so could the german machine gun teams who promptly targetted these bottlenecks when the attack started. Another reason is that the british were using an early form of airburst shell to destroy the wire, not only was it ineffectual but also a high proportion of the shells fired failed to detonate. In fact the shelling was so intense that the rats living off the dead bodies actually fled the german positions. Also if you can find it a book called the first day of the somme written by Martin Middlebrook gives a detailed account of what the frontline troops faced and which "first day" objectives they took - if any. Apologies for not remembering which objectives they achieved on the first day but it is a couple of years since I read the book. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  3. OT...I'm back

UncleAl, From what I have seen in films and documentaries, that only involved spraying the local foliage with a liberal dose of lead. LOL Sorry couldn't resist Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  4. Pick a airplane

Christine, It is good to have another new member on this forum, now if I may be so bold as to ask a question. Are you the same lady that used to frequent the Silent Hunter 3 forum a few years back? Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  5. Happy Birthday, Shredward!

I agree totally with the above, have a great day. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  6. Hi, I have just seen this driver on the ATI site, just wondering if it worth upgrading to from the 10.6 driver? Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  7. RAFL. I have recently had a similar problem, also resulting in a reinstall of the OS (windows 7), the reason I reinstalled was I did not know how to get any of the earlier restore points up and running (I have since found out how to). Anyway my question is could the problem on your wife's machine have been fixed by restoring to an earlier date, say a month earlier, I am just being curious really? Also the problem I had was redirecting me to a page that was similar to the google home page but with just the search bar in the middle and nothing else, but I noticed looking at the address bar at the top of the screen that it said something like www.savetube/[something else].com apologies for not remembering the exact address but it was 3 weeks ago. OVS, I hope you do not have to go down the reinstallation route, but if you do and you also decide to use window 7, I can recomment it - it will take a bit of getting used to after XP, but it is well worth it. Also if you install windows 7 save yourself potential frustration and disable the User Account Settings (set them to never notify). Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  8. VOices in flight

I have just ordered "Voices in Flight" which is the WW1 air war version of "forgotten voices of the great war". I am just wondering if anyone has this book and if it is any good. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  9. R/C Albatross Movie

Olham, I am like you (I think) in that I wish people would put video's on youtube without the annoying music. I generally watch video's of either WW1, WW2 aircraft, or racing video's, and nothing is more annoying than a music track smothering the sound of the engine noise. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  10. Nine Years Ago Today

UKW, My mum was in Boston a month after 9/11 with her sisters, and she noticed that all collections for the IRA had been stopped. She asked a Bostonian who said that America had now realised what we in the UK had been living with for years and had stopped supporting the IRA. In fact I was at work when the planes hit the WTC and my first words after the woman opposite me had repeated what her son hads just told her were "At least now they know what we have been putting up with for years". Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  11. M I A - Missing in action

Von Paulus, I'm still checking in at least once daily and posting infrequently, I am at the moment awaiting a wireless headphone so that I can hopefully master trackir, the old set of headphones I have I find the wire annoying when using them with trackir. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  12. The Flying Circus

Hellshade, MVR flew in Jasta 11, but JG 1 that you mentioned was actually a wing comprised of Jastas 4, 6, 10 and 11. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  13. GHOSTS of the Great War

Yet the BE2 gets both the C and F variants in the calender?
  14. SE5 Lewis Gun

Tranquillo, Because of the limitations of CFS3 when you pull the trigger to fire the guns, all of the guns are fired at the same time, if you listen when you fire the guns on the SE5 or SE5A and then fly anoother british aircraft (sopwith camel for instance) and fire the guns on that you will notice that the sound is different. This is because the devs have on the SE5 or SE5A modelled the sound of both the vickers and lewis guns being fired simultaneously. Because of the aforementioned CFS3 limitations it is not possible to "pull" the lewis gun down the foster mounting and fire upwards with it or to reload it. I hope this was a sitisfactory explanation. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  15. Hellsade, Both you and your wife have a good weekend, and thanks for the excellent videos. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  16. Britain's most disgusting woman

Preferably the hardback version of the book.
  17. RAFL, You should have added "Request transfer to the infantry" to your BE2C guide, to the end of the advanced techniques. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  18. What I'd like to see in Phase IV

Waldemar Kurtz, Thank you for supplying this information, although, I knew about MVR being shot down and wounded in 1917, I was reading your post as aces that had been shot down and killed by 2 seater crews (I had also forgotten about Roaul Lufberry). The information you have supplied is much appreciated and has increased my knowlede of some of the lesser known aces. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  19. What I'd like to see in Phase IV

Waldemar Kurtz, Sir you have got me interested with the statement that many of the best aces of the war died at the hands of skilled two seater crews. Would it be possible to give a brief list of some of those aces, as I only know how a very few of the top aces died: MVR - credited to Roy Brown, although now credited to Cedric Popkin James McCudden - Engine failure Werner Voss - Epic dogfight with "B" flight of 56 squadron and credited to Arthur Rhys Davids Albert Ball - Engine failure although creidited by the germans to LVR Frank Luke - shot down and then apparently took on the whole german army with a revolver, shot dead by an unknown german soldier(s) Edward Mannock - hit by ground fire and crashlanded in flames between the lines after blooding Donald Inglis. As I said my knowledge is very limited. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  20. Virtual Drive

Tranquillo, If you can find it I would recommend getting the Ubisoft DVD version of CFS3 as you only need the disc in the drive to install CFS3, and it comes ready patched to 3.1 Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  21. Hi, I am seriously considering buying track ir 5, but I would like a couple of questions answering before I take the plunge and buy it. As I am virtually blind in my right eye, I would like to know how many degrees you have to move your head to look behind you, as when I move my head to the left I can only move it so far before losing sight of the screen (probably less than 30 degrees)? Could someone please also answer the question for the vertical movement? Also can any UK OFFers recommend a cheap place to buy Track IR 5 + trackclip, the cheapest I have seen it for is £139.95 at rcsimulations. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  22. Question about TrackIR

Olham, Thank you for you help (and indeed everyone else that has offered advice), all that I was doing wrong was trying to use trackir in the default f3 view, once I pressed f4 it started working flawlessly. I now just have to get used to tracking aircraft using it. Again thanks everyone for the help that has been given, although I now feel a prize idiot for not trying f4 myself. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  23. Question about TrackIR

Over50, At the moment I would love to just have a problem with the profile, as it is at the moment, trackir will not even recognise BHAH, in fact BHAH is not even in the titles list at all, and when I left click on CFS3 to highlight it and then run BHAH the trackir will not work in the game, and the title is left blank, although the profile shows which profile I am using i.e.: Device : TrackIR 5 #(serial number) Profile : Olham OFF Tile : When I select another title say Test Drive Unlimited, and run the game it will show Test Drive Unlimited in the title bar. Please can someone help as I have bought this specifically to use with BHAH and so far it has been an expensive disappointment. I cannot even work out how to add BHAH to the games list under advanced. I am using software version TrackIR_5.0.Final.b if this helps. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  24. Question about TrackIR

Olham, Thank you for your kind offer, I have downloaded the file and will try it tomorrow and let you know if it works (fingers crossed). If I am still having problems, is it ok if I pick your brains further? Thanks Rugbyfan1972
  25. Question about TrackIR

For some reason when I select CFS3 in the trackir 5 software and then open BHAH it shows as no title is running, I have tried the same thing in Test Drive Unlimited and it shows as running in the trackir 5 software. I am using the Ubisoft CFS3 DVD to pull the necessary files for BHAH when it is installed, could that be the problem or is there a deeper problem with my trackir 5 software. Thanks Rugbyfan1972
