Top marks for Historical correctness
Wildfowler replied to Wildfowler's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Funny enought thats where I found out too!!!! -
I agree quality over quantity. But I am very worried about having to "Log on" to play SP. I loved the Total War games. Bought Empire, had to get Steam, the game went back. Total wate of time effort and money. I paid for the game! I want to play it!

In the downloads there are WW2 era specific aircraft. What Sim are they for?
-
I have downloaded and run the installer. I am very impressed by a sim that so obviously has had alot of effort, energy and love poured into it. A work of art! The aircraft are a challenge to fly! The wind sound effects are great. Having flown open cockpit gliders it is most realistic! Mind you I had no engine to listen to then!! May I ask a couple of questions and make a couple of observations? 1) The aircraft seem to glide very poorly. If you have no power on they seem to nose down very quickly. I thought these aircraft had good glide qualities. 2) Is there a warp or a time compression facility? For 12 years I was paid by the Royal Air Force and spent most of my time waiting for something to happen or waiting for something to stop happening but I still got paid! Now I cannot always afford to spend long periods of time behind a spluttering engine waiting for something to happen! Time compression would be a plus for me!! 3) Is there some way we could make a campaign set up? That would also I feel be a plus. Please do not think I am criticising. Just thinking out loud

WW2 Aircraft
Wildfowler replied to Wildfowler's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yep got my weapons now!! However I have a few graphics problems with the BoB terrain. I have strange coloured runways, no buildings etc at airfields and the ground alternates between being very brown or very green in blocks. Help Please!!! Thanks -
I am fairly new here. I bought FE when it first came out. Was not impressed and got rid of it. Recently I found this site and the add ons so I purchased FE and expansion and got downloading. Now I am completely sold on the sim!! I also enjoy FSWW1 which is a real work of art. It really is great that WW1 flight simming is taking off. If you excuse the pun. We have FE, FSWW1 and OFF with RoF comming! What is worrying is FSWW1 and OFF have been created by the the shear hard work and dedication of some very dedicated members of the flight sim community. All for free (OFF BH&His now payware but at a very reasonable price). Even IMHO FE has been improved by beyond all recognition by the efforts of gifted simmers. Why have the commercial companies ignored what to me is a most interesting period of aviation?

A question on damage. Today in a E111 I and my wingman took on two Avro 504's. My wingman seemed to disappear! I got some hits on one 504 and then switched to to the other who was closing on my tail. I then looked at the first 504. He was pulling up very hard. Suddenly his top starboard wing broke away and he spiralled down. Is it possible AI sometimes over stress their machines like us mortals or did my few ill aimed hits weaken the wing? By the way. I was not credited with a kill!!

New jet for IL2-1946
Wildfowler replied to gumpy's topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: General Discussion
I had this problem! I found it easier to shove butter up a Hedgehogs bum with a red hot knitting needle than get the mods working for IL2 46.! For the animal lovers out there, no Hedgehog was hurt in the making of this post!! -
These look fantastic! Coastal air operations in WW1 are a very poor cousin to the action in France over the front. Both in the Sim world and indeed aviation history! Although FSWW1 does go into it very well. It is well worth looking into and will give food for thought for you mission builders! U-boat hunting, protecting troop ships crossing the channel ( or attacking them), anti Zep and Gotha patrols, Cap Missions over docks etc not to mention Fleet operations from early carriers or battleships! Look forward to these!

Your first combat flight sim...
Wildfowler replied to Gunrunner's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
I am so old my first flight sim was using Airfix kits and re fighting the Battle of Britain with them!! I then had a board game Blue Max For computer I had Dawn Patrol then CFS1 and grew from there! As a kid with plastic models I could only dream of ever actually flying and dogfighting in a Spitfire or Camel. The virtual world was and to be honest still is a wonder! -
Phase 2 vs 3 questions
Wildfowler replied to Kelly Mo's topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - Development Thread
I agree the key commands are confusing but there is a key code in there some where! -
For a simple way to enjoy a campaign using any aircraft you like see my post "Fallen Eagle" it describes how I do it.

Phase 2 vs 3 questions
Wildfowler replied to Kelly Mo's topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - Development Thread
If you want to try firing pistols at enemy aircraft try Fighter Squadron WW1. It is based on the old Fighter Squadron Screaming Demons game but you can for free download the whole mod (No need for the original game) there you can fly the Taube and other early war machines with pistol only!! Some aircraft you bomb by literally droping the bomb out of the cockpit! Hit "A" and an animation shows the pilots hand emerge out of the cockpit clutching a bomb by the tail!! On FE2's etc you can even get the observer to sit down or order him to man the guns when hostile aircraft are about. Graphics are good for the age of the engine and the aircraft a real handfull to fly. Even has wind on take off. You can hear the wind in the wires as you fly!! Well worth giving a try. -
There I was in my DH2, close on the tail of this E111. Fired short bursts into him from my lewis pieces flew off and eventually he broke up! Great!!! Not quite as great as I first thought. The poor old E111 pilot fell out and promptly fell back through my starboard lower wing. I was now spinning earthwards in a flurry of spars, canvas and probably bits of old Fritz! I was bl**dy lower when I managed to recover and had to put my kite down in a field just our side of the lines. Moral of the story...be careful if you are right up the tail of your enemy or could end up with company in the cockpit!!!

One of my best pilots and his observer have gone west! Peter Fanshaw and his observer Charlie Hall were flying BE2c and completed over twenty missions. Credited with one enemy aircraft downed and numerous ground targets destroyed. Campaign ran during the winter of 1916-1917. Then his Squadron was re-equipped with RE8's. He took it for a test flight around the airfield and was impressed. He was much happier with Hall seated behind him and felt that would offer far better protection. Also the forward firing gun was a real plus. The first mission in the new machine was a mid morning bombing raid on a Hun Airfield. Having just taken off and reached about 200 feet Fanshaw noticed another RE8 to his port side, it was sliding towards him. Fanshaw realised with horror they were about to collide. In desperation he banked starboard and tried to climb. The impact of the two machines was accompanied by the sickening sound of splintering wood and ripping fabric. Fanshaws machine broke up in the air. The other machine spun away it's wings tearing off as it went. What a waste. Four experienced airman lost due to the poor flying of a squadron mate. Oh well have to start another pilot now!! In case anyone wonders. I run a campaign by selecting a pilot and a machine for him to fly. I then fly single missions. Enemy activity and weather set on random. I fly three missions a day. If weather is in my opinion to poor I scrap that mission. I allow every 7th day as a day off. This way you can accuratly monitor the passing of time. I manually record types of kill and also details of any observer carried. Sometimes if forced down in one piece the game says your pilot has been killed. I ignore this unless it is obvious he was killed or killed in the air. If he is forced down in enemy territory I give him 50% chance of being captured by rolling a dice. 1,2,3, he is captured. If not I roll it again and the number given is the number of days it takes him to rejoin his unit. (not realistic I know) if he is captured I give him another 50% chance of escaping and gain roll a dice to see how long he takes to get back but this time times the result by three. This helps the campaign time scale go along. If he does not escape then "For him the War is over!" If you get bored of your pilot I send him on leave untill I want to fly him again and advance the campaign by 14 days! Also as time goes by you can upgrade your pilots aircraft. I find this system gives real meaning to why you are flying. The only downside is the pilot roster in single missions never shows losses etc.

Thank you for the commiserations! Very interested in this KMD mission builder not heard ofit. Where can you get hold of this? Thanks

Thanks for this. But being thick I cannot find v02.20.08. Where is it on the site? Thanks

Thanks for the reply! Very interesting about the glide properties! It makes alot of sense! I think some other sims have over done the glide ability. Time compression cannot be done? Oh well I can live with it! My wifes Grandfather flew in WW1 and told her his experience was 90% of his time was spent bored witless , 5% pissed legless and the other 5% scared sh--less"! He also said the caster oil that sprayed back from the engine gave him the sh-ts! Let me see you model that!!!!!! Seriously, he transferred to the RFC from the Royal Engineers, flew as an Observer in FE's qualified as a pilot and then flew Sopwith Camel and then SE5A. Stayed in the RAF after war and flew Bristol fighters in Iraq in the 20's/30's. Retired from the RAF a Group Captain in the late 30's and was back in again flying a desk for WW2. Shot down twice, once in France and again by Kurdish rifle fire. He died when my wife was 13 years old. He was her hero and gave her a passion for flying and especially WW1 aircraft. She does all the covering and paint work for my R/C models. I currently have a Fokker EIII and a Bleriot. Working on a Camel and PuP. I see what you mean now with the campaigns. I am rather tempted to do some mission building myself. Is there away I can upload missions so others can use them? Cheers

Dawn Patrol (TSR) miniatures campaign pictures.
Wildfowler replied to MK2's topic in WWI Flight Sim Discussion
Many years ago I was given the game "Blue Max". A really wonderful board game depicting WW1 combat. Loved that game and played it it for hours! I still have it and really must try it again. Anyone else remember it, or played it? -
WW2 Aircraft
Wildfowler replied to Wildfowler's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Well I have re-installed everything. It's the weapons folder that's causing the problem. There is no exisiting weapons folder that I can see in Strike Fighters Gold. The moment I add the weapons folder game crashes on start up. Any ideas anyone? -
