Photos taken few months ago during a university visit to an Italian Air Force airbase. For secrecy reasons, I was told to withheld location, date and registrations (which have been photoshopped away).

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Italian Naval Aviation. The Italian Navy celebrated the anniversary with open days in 3 naval air stations.
Dysko replied to narutocan's topic in Italiano
That's correct, they are based on board aircraft carriers "Giuseppe Garibaldi" and "Conte di Cavour", and they are to be replaced with F-35Bs. Since I live far from the sea, I've seen an Italian Navy Harrier only once, at an airshow in 2002.

The Navy NH-90s are still being delivered, so far only 5 have been delivered, so I guess they aren't operational yet. The Army NH-90s are already operational. One of them was lost in 2007 during an airshow when it impacted the surface of the lake above which it was performing, with the loss of one of the 3 crewmembers. Few days later, I visited Sarzana naval air station with my university, and we were told that he was the only crewmember who hadn't been trained on the ETS (ETS training is not mandatory for Army and Air Force helicopter pilots, unless they are certified for long overwater flights).

Last saturday Russian Helicopters organized the Open Italian Helicopter Games in Voghera Rivanazzano airport, a small gliderport/general aviation airport in northern Italy. Special guest, this UTAir EU Mil Mi-171! It was the first time I saw a "Mi-8 family" helicopter! Size comparison with a spanish Ela 07 autogyro The autogyro was interesting too... It's time for a flight! After its display, it parked behind this Agusta-Bell AB.204 (Italian license-built version of the "father of all Hueys") recently restored by Giorgio Pirovano, a collector who also restored many other helicopetrs, like a Bell 47. Flying demo by the Ela autogyro Look ma! No hands! Time for racing The Russian team, all women! Aerospatiale Alouette II Aerospatiale Gazelle Having contacted the organizers few days before the event, I had the chance to enter the airport. However, this was the area in which the public had to stay. Impossible to see anything! Unfortunately, this is quite frequent in Italy, a country where spotting is considered a terrorist activity. And, finally, an off-topic photo... Italian Navy frigate Grecale (F 571), of the Maestrale class, cruising very close to the coastline where I was on vacation for a fallen sailors memorial (there are hills very close to the sea, that's why the ship is seen from above)

Last week I've been at the RIAT with Spillone104 and 2 other spotters. It was a really wonderful airshow, lots of planes both on flying and static display etc. Here are the photos. Last weekend the Swiss watchmaker company Oris organized a fly-in in Ambrì airport, a former military airbase now used as a general aviation airport in Canton Ticino, in southern Switzerland. In Italy I'm used to great distances between the public and the airplanes. In Switzerland... Fliegermuseum Altenrhein's Hawker Hunters: Fliegermuseum Altenrhein's de Havilland Vampire: Antonov An-2: Most of the stencils have been translated in English, only few stencils are still in Russian: P-3 Flyers display team: Boeing Stearman: Pitts Special: Other russians 2 Yakovlev Yak-52: ERCO Ercoupe: As you can see, the Ercoupe doesn't have pedals. The rudder is linked to the ailerons so that always performs coordinated turns: Lots of PC-7s were flying, most of them with paying passengers on board: Focke-Wulf FW-149, license built version of the Italian light plane Piaggio P.149: Bolkow Bo.208 Junior: Gyroflug Super Canard. It is based on the Grob Twin Astir glider: it retains the glider's cockpit section, but with an added engine, different wingplant and canards: de Havilland of Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk: Every fly-in MUST have a yellow Piper Cub! Former Libyan SIAI-Marchetti SF-260, now wearing a fantasy livery: Did the Breitling Jet Team made an apperance? Nope, it is just a big turbine-powered RC model: And, as usual, a video by Spillone104:

Great! I always loved Sweden's indigenous fighters. Unfortunately I won't see it at RIAT

Hi, this sunday I went with Spillone104 at an airshow on the airport of the city of Parma, famous for its cheeses and hams, and for giving birth to the composer Giuseppe Verdi. Unfortunately there was extremely bad weather (there was even a thunderstorm just before the show), but the display line should have been backlit, so the bad weather somewhat helped. This CAP 10 of the local flying club unofficially opened the show This AB-212 of the state police made one last pass in order to ensure everything was ok This Agusta-Sikorsky HH-3F Pelican of the 15° Stormo (Wing) of the Italian Air Force, specialized in SAR and Combat SAR, officially opens the show with the Flag Pass SAR demo One of the highlights of the show: a recently restored Aermacchi MB.326 trainer, the only one of its kind flying in Europe. The MB.326 has been one of the most successful Italian military programs, exported in many countries such as Australia, Brazil and South Africa. It is the "father" of the MB.339 used by the Frecce Tricolori, and the airline Alitalia used to have 4 MB.326 to train its pilots. Aerobatic planes displays: Zlin 50 Pitts Special Yakovlev Yak-50 flown by Sergio Dallan, 23 times Italian champion in the unlimited class and considered to be in the top 10 of the best aerobaric pilots in the world. Another Zlin 50 SIAI-Marchetti SF.260, the most successful Italian general aviation plane, and used as a basic trainer by many air forces throughout the world CAP 232 flown by Rudy Natale, leader of the Italian civilian aerobatic team Another highlithg, the Fiat G.59. The G.59 was the second airplane built in Italy after WW2 (the first one being the general aviation plane Macchi MB.308). It was based upon the fighter Fiat G.55 Centauro, but, due to lack of Italian-built engines, it was powered by nonetheless than the Rolls-Royce Merlin! What a sound! The Italian Air Force comes back, this time with 3 airplanes from the Reparto Sperimentale Volo (Flight Test Wing). The first one is the AMX: Then a Panavia Tornado IDS, coming in at very high speed with full AB! And finally the best the Italian Air Force can offer, the Eurofighter Typhoon! I didn't take any photo of the Frecce Tricolori that closed the show, I already saw them a lot of times and we preferred to get back to the car to avoid the traffic jam. And finally, Spillone104's videos: MB.326 G.59 AMX Tonka Typhoon

Come? Solo in Flight Simulator.

Here are some photos from Base Aerienne 701 in Salon-de-Provence, where this sunday the Patrouille de France celebrated its 60th anniversary. Base Aerienne 701, where the Patrouille is based, hosts the École de l'Air, the French Air Force Academy. Static display: Dassault Rafale Dassault Mirage 2000C Dassault Mirage 2000N Dassault Mirage F1 Fouga Magister with an Air France DC-3 in the background There was quite a strong wind During the morning the display line was backlit, so not many good photos... Eurocopter EC-725 Caracal during a fast-rope insertion Red Arrows, Frecce Tricolori and Patrouille de France's leaders Team Iskry and Patrouille Suisse in formation with Patrouille de France's camera ship Royal Air Force's Red Arrows flyng BAe Hawks Belgian Air Force's Red Devils flying SIAI-Marchetti SF-260s Fouga Magister And then the afternoon's displays, now with the sun behind the public! A glider of the Academy Ramex Delta flying Mirage 2000Ns An airshow without afterburners is not worth living for Polish Air Force's Team Iskry flyng PZL TS-11 Iskras Spanish Air Force's Patrulla Aguila flyng CASA C-101 Aviojets Belgian Air Force's F-16 solo: Equipe de Voltige de l'Armèe de l'Air's Extra 300 Airbus A400M Grizzly Swiss Air Force's Patrouille Suisse flying Northrop F-5 Tiger IIs This formation is called Toblerone due to its triangular shape (I don't know if you have Toblerone across the pond, in case you don't it's a brand of Swiss chocolate famous for its triangular shape) The usual display team draws the national flag with smoke. Not the Swiss one. They draw the flag's + with the aircraft themselves! Italian Air Force's Frecce Tricolori flying Aermacchi MB.339s This maneuver is named lomçevak (Czech for "drunk man"... I think). The MB.339 is the only jet aircraft that can perform this maneuver. French Air Force's Dassault Rafale. And finally the Patrouille de France flying Dassalut-Breguet Alpha Jets

Hi, this weekend there was an open day at Milano Smistamento locomotive depot, one of the main freight yard and locomotive depot in Italy, where lots of historic trains are stored and kept in running conditions by volunteers. I don't know much about trains, so for any questions you have to ask Spillone104. The locomotive in the middle arrived from Germany!
-
I discovered that steam locomotive didn't come from Germany... it is stored in Luino locomotive depot (an Italian city near the Swiss border), and it was towed to Milan by an electric locomotive: http://blog.tuttotreno.it/2208-una-tedesca-a-milano/ (sorry, Italian only, but you can see part of the towing locomotive in the 1st photo).
-
Well, some of them could cover the year range from WW2 to the end of the Cold War... Some of the brown locomotives were built between the '20s and the '30s, and served well into the '90s, with the latest retired in 2006! That freight yard, being the biggest in Italy during WW2, was a primary target for Allied bombers. During one of these raids, due to a ground crew error, many bombs were loaded on bombers without a fuse. Still today it is common for excavation workers to find unexploded bombs in the towns near the yard (once they found one near my high school, the following day lessons were suspended for bomb removal operations).

Is it me, or Spanish decals are missing? The various decals.inis refer to che "C-15" folder, but I only get "FA-18X" folders from the various zips uploaded (even from "Decals.7z" uploaded on 26/11). Thank you!
