The "Opposite Campaign" Full DiD
themightysrc replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I think I may well partake, given that I'm not in the KvC campaign. So Kurt Remarx or Axel Griese? Decisions, decisions... -
"I have it installed on my wife's laptop, and I despise it." Snap! well, at least, my wife bought a laptop with Vista on it, having been used to XP Pro. At first, she gave it the benefit of the doubt, but now, 2 years on, she loathes it with a passion. Give that it's got double the RAM and processor power of my lowly Ubuntu setup, Ubuntu still blows it into the weeds for performance. If only OFF ran on linux! I'm on XP Pro still on my own gaming rig, but given that W7 hasn't had dreadful reviews and is spoken of quite well by techies of my working acquaintance, I suppose my next machine will tun W7 64 bit to get the full benefit. By then, I hope, I'll have cast aside my current machine for something that actually handles PCI-E (!!) and doesn't creak and groan running OFF. As an aside, I work for a local authority, and it's noticeable that we still run corporately on XP Pro: the ICT department looked at Vista for the hoi polloi and decided - wisely to my mind - to give it something of a wide berth.

Early Afternoons Availability
themightysrc replied to Kingkat's topic in WOFF 1 2 3 / UE - Multiplayer
Hi, Given that these CST times look quite good for us European players (I think we're 6 hours ahead of you?), as it would enable early evening fun and games during the week - hooray! Let me know when you're planning on running something. Cheers, Si -
"Merely one statement and I'm done. "Those who do not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it" " A pity it has no relevance to your original comments.

FlybyPC, "No politics gents, we know the rules. Let's all behave." Well, if Al's is the general level of political comment on this forum, then it seems rather pointless trying to engage on a factual level. Looks like some people would rather believe propaganda and wild supposition than debate backed up with evidence. And, as I pointed out previously, I wasn't the person who dragged politics into the thread. I'm afraid it rather looks as though political sloganeering is quite acceptable here - so long as you hold a particular political stance. Right then - can someone lock the thread to prevent any more pointless jpegs getting posted?

A new WWI Comedy movie coming out soon...

...with hilarious consequences...!! -
Pol, "Full medal system will likely be P4." Excellent. I'm currently rereading No Parachute, having bagged a copy off Amazon, and Arthur Gould Lee mentions occasionally the awarding of medals, and how apparently random it was. It looks as though, in the RFC at least, picking up the MC (the first medal a flyer could expect) necessitated not only bringing down a certain number of enemy aircraft (apparently around 7-8-9 minimum) but also having served as a good flight commander. I'm sure this latter is easily addressed by keeping track of how many in a player's flight (assuming they are the flight commander, and I'm guessing many of us make sure we are...) are shot down/killed during the player's tenure as F/C. Is that the direction of travel envisaged for P4? Cheers, Si

HAT IN THE RING RELEASE DATE?
themightysrc replied to Morris's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
"Firstly pressure is brought to bear for a release date, then massive amounts are spent on PR and Ad Campaigns The Producers MUST then meet the release date, ready or not" A fiver and a crate of Whiskas to the first person who can think of a recent release that has undergone exactly this process... -
I guess I can fill in one more hole. My DV was pulling up to the other DV's and then suddenly I had the external view, which I guess meant a direct hit from Archie. I respawned some way off and picked up on the RE8's whilst everyone else was having fun blowing Tommies out the the skies, so headed back towards the 'D' in Douai, only to get hit again by an unknown assailant. As there was nowt on my TAC, i put it down to my second death of the day via Archie. Respawned for the final time about a million miles away from the action with a motor that immediately started making grinding noises, and with no Teamspeak, apparently. Flicked over to the TS screen, got that running again and then had the TS screen persist as I tried to get back to the business of flying. Couldn't dispose of the TS screen, had the status bar turn into what looked like a 10 bar gate in lovely light blue, thought f*** it and gave up. Hope the rest of you had fun.

Having seen CFS3 roundly slagged off at every turn by probably every gamer who's ever played it, I now find myself wondering if Winder's post points to there actually being quite a lot of life in CFS3, provided it could get the extra exploitation/development that it clearly needed, and probably still needs. Winder - how much has TSTMNBN influenced your direction with regard to P4 of OFF and CFS3 as an engine?

Sounds a great idea but the time is unlikely to be suitable - perhaps you should run this on a Sunday to give Vasco a break some time?

Wolfram Von Richtoffen
themightysrc replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
To be honest, OVS, I know or have known dozens of non-native speakers of English, and invariably they say or said that English is quite easy to learn as it's not inflected and the gender element is more or less absent, whilst the number of cases is minimal compared to many other languages (think Latin for an extreme example!). It's probably a reason (aside from a wee thing like the British Empire making it the language of government for about 1/3 of the world's population) why it's quite as popular as it is. Chuck in the global role of America and its influence, plus the mutabillity of the language (le weekend, anyone?) and you quickly understand why it's more or less universal as a language. Now if you want a difficult language to learn, try Greek: that's a complete bastard to read, write and speak, although it's immensely satisfying once you get the hang of it. -
<throws bucket of cold water over thread> Steady on chaps: let's see a bit of stiff upper lip. "cause there isn't ONE British craft, that was beautiful." Sopwiths Pup and Triplane, you heathen...

OT England Expects!
themightysrc replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
"There were no journalists or other backseat drivers to be seen, so we just shot everybody who looked like he needed it. If it turned out we made a mistake, nobody mentioned it." Nice. I'm not sure you'd go a bundle on that particular modus operandi if it were foreign troops occupying American turf. -
Hi RD, About time too! I have to agree with all the above posts. What I will add is don't fret if you rapidly accumulate a large stack of dead pilots on your desk because of the murderous AI and the difficulty of the game. It's all part of the "fun". It sounds like you've already got Trackir - presumably it's an essential for racing games - so the only other must have is a force feedback joystick: the way that WWI planes fly makes it more or less essential, to my mind. "Hope you have as much fun as I am having with it though not gone online as of yet..." Well I hope that both of you end up online! Whilst I'm a truly dreadful pilot and can't hit a cow's arse with shovel, I find that a sesh with like-minded people (who actually manage to shoot things down) is one of the nicer ways of wiling away a few hours. Have fun and happy landings...

Albatross Albatross...
themightysrc replied to Slartibartfast's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well, I've never had problems with Albatri getting hacked to pieces by Nieuport 17s, bursting into flames and crashing. Admittedly, it's when I'm the Albatros pilot. -
"Suspect many of our ...erm middle age crowd (me included) here don't use FB How is that an advantage over this forum?" Well, it isn't essentially! However in terms of exposure, it's got thousands of times the reach of a specialist flight sim forum like CombatAce or SimHQ, to be fair. "I joined the group, but I don't think anyone will know me from Adam." That's nor fair on yourself, Siggi old chap: for a start, you're better dressed.

Where can I download it?
-
Hi chaps, Sounds like you were doing some good work for the Kaiser and Fatherland yesterday! I'm sorry I wasn't around - my PC's decided it prefers to spend its time endlessly rebooting itself and I have got to the bottom of it yet. Just hoping it isn't anything terminal... Av8er - getting lost is the main bugbear I have in MP, so I understand your frustration. Perhaps we should have a slightly more robust method of gathering up stragglers? Worth a thought. It would be very handy for people like me who get shot down regularly (cos I'm a crap pilot) and end up respawning somewhere South of Paris (or so it seems to me...).

HAT IN THE RING! : Web update
themightysrc replied to Polovski's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hi Pol, 400mb is a bit to handle, to be honest, but the main reason I'd rather have it as a CD/DVD is that I can pop it into the OFF:BH&H case which I currently keep in a back lit shrine which used to be the living room. My wife understood my reasoning and was kind enough to make even more room by leaving me and sueing me for divorce. I'm sorry I appear to have gone a little off track there. Please can we have the DVD option - if my PC ever breaks, I'd like to be able to reload it all from DVDs, rather than faffing around with downloads. Slightly more OT: do you have a list in mind of the new aircraft that are likely to appear in P4? And will you be persisting with CFS3? Cheers, Si -
Ah, OK, is everyone else having problems with that link? Basically, if you go onto Facebook there's an Over Flanders Fields fan page, and I thought it was a cracking idea. Sorry if the link didn't work, and sorrier still that people aren't interested.

Time to fly some old crates... or new ones depending on how you view it
themightysrc replied to Slartibartfast's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion

Fly with the DiD group?

"He might also be interested in creating a custom skin for you when you make Ace." Well, I suspect I won't be bothering him to create a custom skin for me, given the qualifying criteria :( -

A Lanky in Tykeland? Best of luck in all senses! We really should organise a Grim Up North OFF meetup somewhere where they do decent beer... Good luck with OFF, and keep pilot never dies ticked until you've got the hang of it - it's only taken me 8 months (and counting).
