  1. First Impressions

Thanks for the reply Rick, I'll need lots more pratice with the early Nieuports I always did have a wee problem with aircraft with a top mounted MG. Once I get the range zeroed in and know where the lead will strike I won't be wasting so much ammo.
  2. Was coming home after a pretty crappy day at work, stopped at my mail box like I always do before I pull in my driveway. Open the lid and there was an all white box in there along with the other mail, didn't even really pay attention to the box and just sat everything on my kitchen counter. After a shower and cooking and eating dinner, I relaxed in front of the TV. About two hours later my son asked what was in the white box. I said "don't know, open it and see what it is". He did then got this big cheese grin on his face, "Ah Dad did you enjoy watching TV?" I replied "Yeah right, 200 channels and nothings on as usual". He said "Boy are you gonna kick yourself in the butt", I turned my head to ask him why he said that. He was holding an all black DVD case which was my copy of OFF:BHaH Man is this going to be a long week.
  3. See ya soon

Finally was able to order my copy of BHaH, long wait but looks well worth it. Be seeing you guys soon.
  4. See ya soon

LOL guys, If I remember there is one Godzilla movie where he actually does fly! If I remember correctly he used his atomic breath as propulsion, not very aerodynamic but hey, it looked like the ultimate afterburner
  5. Yes Firecage and anyone else wanting to jump right into RoF, there is something definately not right in my eyes with the always on IP connection at least for the SP aspect of the game, it really isn't necessary for copy protection. A simple one time check when you start the game would take care of that and can also check your version to let you know if you need any patches or to install an update for MP play. Other then that the SP part of the game should not require an always on IP connection, after it does it checks it should DC. Even the uploading of your stats could be done the same way at the end of the game, but I think that should be optional for the player IMHO. I have been following some threads at other sites and reading between the lines and catching little hints kind of dropped here and there from some posters who maybe might know a little more then most. I think (and I am drawing my own conclusions here folks) based from what I have read, there is a good possibility RoF might be a flying version of a pay to play MMORPG in sheeps clothing. God I do hope I'm wrong on this, but something definately isn't right with the SP aspect of this game requiring always on IP connection just for copy protection purposes. It's like they are trying to mainly condition the SP to maintaining an internet connection, preferably a high speed one for this game, now why would that be? Were they possibly thinking of going stictly pay for play MP only down the line? Consider this, they offer a flight sim seen like no other, superior GFX, high fidelity FM and damage model, everything a flight simmer could want in a WWI flight sim (or any sim for that matter), then after a couple of months of playing this game for free SP or MP (or both) how many could or would walk away if they announced that due to the huge popularity of the game and to off set server cost they were going to a paid MP only system, and the SP aspect will no longer be supported. I'm sure some will walk away, most won't and if you have ever seen that TV special about people addicted to WoW..well you get my point. Another really weird thing was the Devs have become like vaporware over the last couple of days, when before that interview they were present almost every other day at one site. With all the speculation going on you would think they would make a brief appearance to kind of clear the air. Are they just avoiding the verbal abuse they will get from some posters or is there something else they are trying to avoid? Maybe I'm just overeacting, but you know that weird feeling you get in your gut when something ain't quite right, well I've been having this since that interview and the devs sure are not doing anything for me to make that feeling go away.
  6. Rise of Flight review on SimHQ Forum

Hey guys just wanted to comment about the online authentication concerns with RoF. I don't know if it will be the same as the type used by Steel Fury: Kharkov 1942 but the part about having to connecting briefly to the Internet for SP does not seem to present a problem. I figured a little test would be in order to see if I can play SFK42 without an internet connection. I disconnected (physically) from the internet and tried to play SFK42 and I played a couple missions with no problems AFAIK. I'm not saying this will be the case with RoF, but just trying to keep things in perspective till the Devs say otherwise. The whole internet connected/not connected maybe a non-issue for SP in RoF
  7. Hi Guys need some help here. I had to do a reinstall of FE (DD). I patched up to the lastest patch now my Saitek controller won't work. All the mapped buttons work but I have no flight controls. I did initalize the sticks in the options screen, but when I go to a mission they don't work. One thing that was weird, when I uninstalled and then reinstalled FE and the latest patch for some reason the game saved my custom configurations in the options menu from the previous installation, so it's looks like I have missed a config. file when I did the FE uninstall. I'm not sure how that happened since I did the uninstall from the FE game uninstall application and I did a search after the uninstall to make sure no files were left behind (I didn't find any) Is there a easy work around for this or will I have to do another uninstall/reinstall? If I do have to reinstall FE where might this config. file be hidden at? Also I have SF/WOE/WOV installed on my computer, could this be a problem?
  8. Control stick wont work in FE with Nov patch

Problem solved! Found a Thirdwire folder in my Vista Admin profile, deleted it, reinstalled FE and Nov patch and everything is working as it should
  9. Control stick wont work in FE with Nov patch

Hi nixarass, Yeah this is kind of weird. I checked all my other Thirdwire installed games and no problems with the joysticks there. I have done the joysick recconition in the options menu of FE (both for default and my personal config.), and recalibrated my sticks in Saiteks config program. But it seems once I go to play a mission/quick mission or campaign the options menu of the controllers reverts back, in the default it goes back to keyboard control and in my personal config. it shows "undefined" under all the control axis. I'm leaning towards doing a reinstall and staying with the October patch, but I'm not sure how many installs you get on a electronic downloaded game.
  10. Over Flanders Fileds Phase 3

I agree with FastCargo closing that last thread as it did go from a sprited exchange to starting a down hill slide. Like CA_Stary and Jedi Master the choice of CFS3 as the engine has caused me to hold up purchase to see if the waters safe if you know what I mean. While MS does make some excellent civilian flight sims, their Combat series were very lacking and at times down right wonky, like a Dr Jeckel/ Mr. Hyde type of thing. What I would like too see is more post like yours B Bandy RFC, commenting on whats good and whats not so good, and allowing the purchaser to make up their own minds based upon information like you posted. Unfortunately I'm starting to see "new" posters popping up at other forums, posting only in the OFF3 sub forums, writting personal reviews on how great OFF3 is . Post like yours B Bandy RFC move myself closer to purchasing OFF3 then those other ever will
  11. Wow thats true, that's an aspect I didn't think about . The tale of the tape will be soon once more people start getting their game DVD's I guess.
  12. Interesting post B Bandy RFC and you do bring up a good point about YAP, but I will admit I'm way behind the curve when it comes down too did Microsoft or Thirdwire give their blessings for these pay mods. My post was all about the "you should buy because" theme only because to me it's a poor selling point for someone who has no clue what OFF 1 or 2 was, and for those who did play OFF 1 or 2 and had install issues, poor game play or were just not impressed. It's not the people who liked OFF1 & 2 OBD who need convince to buy OFF:BHaH, it's all the other people who have to be convince. If OFF:BHaH lives up to it's billing, OFF 1 & 2 will fast fade into a distant memory and that maybe a good thing if you know what I mean. But I have to ask why do you feel OFF:BHaH is the underdog? Do you mean because OFF:BHaH is in competiton against FE or RoF or because a small group of guys got together and pooled their talents to make what looks like the ultimate study sim of WWI, there by tweeking the nose of the big time developers and publishing houses?
  13. Well I did see over at the OFF forum today someone from GamersGate or GoGamer(?) offered to make available electronic downloads for OFF:BHaH. Will have to see if the OBD takes em up on the offer, if your okay with electronic downloads. I have purchased two electronic downloads, FE and Steel Fury. You just have to make sure you hang on to purchase info in case of HD crash and you need to reinstall.
  14. Thats a very good thing to hear that it will run on Vista and I will support developers who are making good stable simulators. But there is one thing that I don't quite understand. I keep hearing here and on other boards how we should support the OBD team by buying OFF:BHaH because of OFF1 & 2 being free, some of these guys make it sound like that in itself is unique and never done before. The great modders here and elsewhere have been doing this for years with TK's simulators. I have 3 different installs of Strike Fighters, one I kept original, the other is the Korean War mod and the other is the BoB mod (also Aircraft, terrains, effects fm etc). I mean TK did give us a good base that was Strike Fighters to start from and is very active in helping expanding on his product. It is because of this that I have continued supporting TK by purchasing FE, WOE & WOE (and others as soon as budget allows). Now OFF 1,2 and yes even OFF:BHaH on the other hand is based off of someone else game, not one of the OBD team's own design. So to me in the purest sense OFF 1, 2 & OFF:BHaH are mods because they are not stand alone games, you still need CFS3, a game not developed by OBD and that fact is undisputable. Now before you guys call in an airstrike on me please let me say this. Do I personally feel any mod is worth $50.00? In OFF:BHaH case, from what I have seen and read I would say yes, definitely. Unlike OFF 1 & 2 OFF:BHaH is a mod taken to a very very unique extreme in the sense it's almost a totally new game, not just an average or above average WW1 mod for CFS3. To me it's just odd to keep say "buy OFF:BHaH because OBD gave OFF 1 & 2 away for nothing". OFF:BHaH looks like it will sell itself on what it offers the WW1 simmer and thats a very good thing. Because in my case, if I based my decision to buy OFF:BHaH only off my experiance with OFF 2 (free or not) I wouldn't touch OFF:BHaH with a ten foot pole.
  15. As long as there is no install issues with Vista I will get OFF3 no doubt. I will support any simulator game developer as long as I don't have to go crazy getting it to run on my OS. I recently got out of building plastic model kits because the cost of the hobby got to lopsided compared to the enjoyment value. With model kits averaging $40-$50 for mid-range kits and over $100.00 for a top end kit which will occupy about a month or two of your time then collect dust, $50.00 for a good simulator is way more bang for the buck.
  16. I think I'll be waiting for an un-biased review also. I did have OFF2 on my rig but had to do a reinstall and was never able to get it to install again, no matter what I tried. FE is for XP but it runs great on my Vista OS (all my TW games do), also the mods are easy to install and all work great, so until I see what the jury says about any install issues with Vista I will be waiting in the wings. Even if I do get OFF3, FE will still get lots more of my playing time as I really like the fact that you can fly any mission type, in anytime of day or weather and you can get a couple of missions in even if you don't have allot of free time. I don't know if this will be the case for OFF3, as I'm not sure if it has quick missions or if the time skip problems of OFF2 have been overcome. Another game feature that OFF3 has that I do think is awsome but also causes me some worry is the weather in the game. I do think it's awsome that OFF3 features historically accurate weather for the day your flying in but in all the video's I have seen it's either raining or overcast. Is the weather in Europe always that bad?
  17. New to FE

The first WWl simulator I remembered playing was at the local arcade back in 1977, so you can imagine what that looked like I had Rowans Dawn Patrol also and the svga gfx gave the game a great "wow" factor, but it just didn't seem to wrap me up into the game like RB1 or RB3D or any of the Sierra titles did. Don't get me wrong Dawn Patrol was a good game but it just seemed to be missing something and after a few months I just stopped playing it . Next to RB1 my favorite was A-10, I know the missions were scripted but it was pure "hawg" heaven poppin over a hill, rolling out and taking out an tank column with Hellfires, snakeyes and the gau 30 . Another favorite of mine was Tornado (Spectrum Holobyte?) that simulator was awsome as was the real Gr1. Okay sorry went OT with that but i would love to see everything themightysrc and guitarclassic55 stated in a game, but I don't think it will be in FE or FE2. It will probably be OFF P3 or Knights that will have all these things. Third Wire sims are definately on the lighter side, but they do offer the ability to fly in combat lots of AC that would probably never make it into a study sim or probably any sim for that matter. I will buy OFF P3 and Knights but I will still play FE and the SF family of games, even though they are not hardcore they are fun, not a study sim but not arcade either. I know there will always be room on my HD for games like these. Sometimes after a hard day at work and the boss was being an arse, it great to just get into the air and imagine his butt in that Albatros or SPAD and I'm the one on his 6...great stress relief and won't cost me my job
  18. New to FE

Actually Red Baron (yes the original) was better in the "you are there" feeling then RB3D IMHO. I would spend hours flying that game everyday, it was like an addictive drug . Sierra was in it's golden days then with A-10(original), Aces over the Pacific and Aces of the Deep, the immersion factor on these sims were all top notch. But if I had a choice between a game had a great "you are there" feeling but was highly unstable with my current OS and one that wasn't as great in the "you are there feeling" but was very stable with my current OS, guess which one I would take. The last five missions I flew in RB3D all ended in CTD's. And in those missions I had emerged victorious flying my Fokker E.1 against N-11's at 4 to 1 odds or greater since my only wingman was always shot down immediately. So I'm flying home, feeling pretty damn good about what I had just accompolished, expecting a medal or promotion cut scene and instead I get a CTD :angry2: ..... 5X after applying several suggested fixes
  19. New to FE

S! all ,I have been so busy downloading and installing the wonderful campaigns, aircraft, skins, effects etc for FE ,WoE, WoV and SFP1 this is the first chance I have had since joining Combat Sim to make my first post! My hats off to all you terrific modders . This thread caught my interest so I figure this is a good place for my first post. I've had RB3D since it's release and I eventually had tried every mod out there and RB3D managed to stayed on my hard drive for a very long time. But after purchasing a new rig with the Vista OS recently, RB3D just became unmanagable. Constant CTD's (real frustrating in career mode), random corrupted gfx no matter what solution's were suggested and tried. I became so frustrated that it finally gave me that "push" to download FE, and boy do I now realize what I had been missing! I also managed to get WoE and WoV and SFP1 from a generous fellow at SimHq and I'm now hooked on TK's simulators. Not only is RB3D gone from my HD but so too is Mig Alley (replaced by the Korean War mod for SFP1). My next two purchases will be FE2 and WoI, I really miss my IAF by EA... long ago retired by XP. Oh and least I forget I wanted to thank the guy's here who had posted the Vista work arounds for TK's games, I was luckly that all I needed to do was edit my terrains folder. I have had no problems even with terrain/tile mods except for WoE (stock terrain run's fine), that one I'm still working on, so I hope you guy's don't mind if I ask for some suggestions down the road if I can't make it work. Thanks again!
