  1. "Two weeks," that's where it is.

I've been kinda lacking motivation for this project, because

     A) I don't even have PTO or KAW installs set up at the moment, so the Essexes aren't even going to get much use on my end when they're done, and

     B) I'm able to complete several modern warships from scratch in the same time it's taking me to finish even a small section of this big carrier.

But I'm making progress bit by bit. Here's one of the fire directors (mostly done with mapping but not yet textured).

  2. Kanimbla class amphibious transport

This model represents the Kanimbla class, an amphibious transport in commission with the Royal Australian Navy from 1994 to 2011.

The Kanimbla and her sister ship Manoora were extensively modified Newport class landing ships transferred from the USN. While officially recommissioned in 1994, they did not enter RAN service until 1999 when the repairs and upgrades were finally completed.

The Kanimbla class has a large hangar for up to four helicopters, landing pads fore and aft, and an enormous crane capable of lifting 70 tons.

See the readme for full details. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or constructive criticisms regarding this model, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you!

  3. Interestingly, but it seems that the designers of the Ivan Rogov never accommodated for the replacement of the ships two gas turbines... meaning that once the engines became worn out, the ships were as good as gone.

That's hilarious. I had wondered why they were retired so early.

    Thanks again for the resources.

Hehe the reason I asked for DPRK vessels was that I wanted to add them to my Korea 85 camp, check it out here http://combatace.com/topic/85880-korea-85-wip-including-new-ground-war/

Cool, I'll give it a try. And I'll see about throwing some DPRK equipment together.

The Kanimbla is almost done. Working on the distance/collision/flight deck lods now. Too bad there aren't many Aussie escorts for her right now.

  4. Awesome WBS! The Kanimbla is actually something I'll be using in a small campaign I'm working on.

That's just the sort of thing I like to hear. I'm hoping all these ships I've built allow you guys to create more immersive campaigns and fun missions.

    More progress:

Just out of curiosity, are there any plans to do the modern Gator Navy ships?

I started work on an LPD-17 San Antonio class a while back, and I'll get around to finishing it eventually. I also plan to make an Oosumi class for the JMSDF, and maybe Russia's Ivan Rogov if I can ever find some clear photos and diagrams.

  5. There was a small oversight with the Newport class-- I forgot to delete the lines I use to align the railings before I exported the model, so it created some graphical glitches. The fixed version is now uploaded. Once again, to anyone who already downloaded it, I'm sorry for the inconvenience. And thanks to the community for catching bugs so quickly.

One of these days, maybe I'll actually get a release right 100% on the first try!

Lovely! I must say that thanks to your efforts WBS, SF2 now has one of the largest and most comprehensive libraries of cold war and modern naval assets!

EDIT: Ps. When/if doing the DPRK vessels, go all out on the rust :)

Rust? On the Glorious Leader's pristine and ultra-modern armada? Inconceivable!

    Hello Samurai,

Is there any chance you can model both the Spurance/Kidd Class Destroyers, I hope so

    Cheers Mike G

Yep. The Kidd class is here.

That model started out as a Spruance, but I cancelled the project years ago when I found out that SF2: North Atlantic already included a Spruance, and so I turned it into a Kidd class instead.

I have plans to modify the model back into a Spruance so that I can create the final versions of that ship (with Tomahawk box launchers, RAM, ASROC VLS, etc.) The remodeling would be simple enough to do, but I do not look forward to trying to find refit dates for each ship, and reworking the namelist.ini files for the stock Spruances.

  6. LST-1179 Newport class landing ship

This model represents the Newport class, a large tank landing ship designed for the US Navy. The class features a unique bow ramp, allowing vehicles to be loaded and unloaded more quickly and easily than other LST designs.

Twenty Newports were built, and they served in the USN from 1969, with the last being decomissioned in 2002. Most of them were then sold to foreign navies, including Australia, Brazil, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Spain, and Taiwan.

The Newport class is armed with two twin 3" gun turrets, plus a Phalanx CIWS following a 1980s refit. They can carry up to 30 heavy vehicles and 400 infantry.

Note: Australia's Kanimbla class will require extensive modifications to the model and will be included in a separate package.

See the readme for full details. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or constructive criticisms regarding this model, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you!

  7. The Newport is being uploaded now. This ship will allow six more countries to have amphibious task groups in SF2 starting in the mid-1990s (plus more variety for the USN).

    WBS you rock!

and nice you fix things I wanted to point out, namely the too good (pristine?) conditions of them hulls, a bit of decaling of rust and water environment in general on them looks better IMO

Thanks. I'm still not very confident about rust, weathering and stuff. When I'm spraying down a layer of rust and dirt in gimp, I think "this is too much." But it doesn't look as severe in-game. Must be the lighting? Anyway, since this is an older ship, I tried to make it look more weather-beaten.

Love the boats!! hey WBS i might suggest have float pontoons strapped too the side to I seen a a few photos like that GO GATOR NAVY!!

I was thinking to add those, but I ran out of room on the texture sheet, and out of time/patience. Maybe in some future update.

  8. Beautiful work as usual. Not to dump more on your plate but do you have any plans on modifyvng this to the Australian assault ship conversion? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Manoora_(L_52)

Yeah, I can do that. It will take about another week to make the modifications, so I may just release the Newport first and have the Kanimbla class in a separate package.

To round off the far east theater, how would you feel about making some DPRK scrap metal ships?

Yes, I'll be making some of those. I'll be able to borrow the guns and radar from the Riga, which will save time. Looking at the layout, I'm pretty sure that the Nanjin will blow itself up half the time when launching its Silkworms.

    I also have plans for South Korea's UlsanKDX-I, KDX-II, and KDX-III

  9. It's a good start. Just some advice:

    1) Condense your materials. Right now, it looks like this--

For this model, you have 6 different textures. So there should be only 6 materials. You should not have duplicates of the same one over and over. I recommend that you delete them all and keep just the 6 you need.

    2) You have two different models of the same 76mm gun, with two different uvw patterns and different textures. Pick one, texture it well, and then use it for every ship that has the same gun. It will save you a lot of work.

    3) Don't show the uvw lines when you are making the texture. Don't just fill in between them. Paint over them completely.

    4) You don't need the .SHD file. That was only for an older version of the game. For the ini file, just use this:

    [shadow]
    CastShadow=TRUE
    ShadowCastDist=500
    MaxVisibleDistance=1500

    5) For the Exocet and Harpoon launchers, you have the "ASMdummy" line in the data file, but you don't have them in the model, so your missiles won't work correctly. Inside each launcher, you need to create an object with the correct name ("ASMdummy01" and "ASMdummy02"). The object can be anything simple. I use an invisible 1mm x 1mm square. This becomes the pivot point for the weapon so it can aim and launch properly.

    6) Try to use the proper and consistent class names. It's much easier for other modders this way.
"S-143 Class ALBATROS" ->  "Type 143 Albatros class fast attack craft"
"Votsis class Exocet" ->  "Type 148 Tiger class fast attack craft (Exocet)"
"Votsis class_data" ->  "Type 148 Tiger class fast attack craft (Harpoon)"

    Good luck!

  10. Thanks, russouk2004! I'm really looking forward to your modernized J-7, by the way. No campaign set near China is complete without that plane.

I've just updated the AV-8B Harrier II Plus (2010) package. Nengajyou made some new skins and decals, so the package covers pretty much the entire USMC inventory, including the CAG birds. Please download it when you get the chance.

I'm working on a request from a while back, the Newport class LST:

    post-33721-0-65469600-1428049678.jpg

It's... not a pretty ship. But it was a fairly important one. The Newports were a contemporary of the Iwo Jima class that colmack is working on, and will fit well into any cold war scenario. Furthermore, they were sold off to other countries (including Taiwan, Spain, and Australia) after the USN decommissioned them, and many of them are still in service. This will allow amphibious task groups to be set up for those countries in SF2.

  11. Thanks for finding that page, KJakker. I had based the gun performance on the Model 1958, since it was the closest thing I could find. I've adjusted the rate of fire, train, and elevation according to the listed info. The source you linked says 48 rounds of ready ammunition, but nothing about total capacity. I'll assume 480 rounds total, which is close to similar sized 40mm turrets.

I'll upload the new version in a moment, but you can just grab this hotfix instead if it's more convenient.

  12. Kang Ding class frigate

This model represents the Kang Ding class frigate of the Republic of China Navy, in service from 1996 to present. They are a version of the La Fayette class built for Taiwan. Six Kang Ding class ships are now in ROCN service.

The Kang Ding has slightly different structure and electronics from the La Fayette, and entirely different weapon systems. She is armed with a 76mm gun, two Bofors 40mm guns, Phalanx CIWS, Sea Chaparral point defense SAMs, and Hsiung Feng II anti-ship missiles.

Note: You will require a capital ship to create a proper task group in game, such as the Kee Lung class (Taiwan's most powerful warship), available here. Other modern ROCN vessels are available here.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or constructive criticisms regarding this model, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you!

Here is a close-up of the new Hsiung Feng II missile, on its way to meet a friend.

    post-33721-0-19227600-1426866486_thumb.jpg

I made two versions, ship-launched (with booster) and air-launched (without booster). Both are included in the package.

I also posted an update for the La Fayette. There were a couple of typos in the data file, causing the ship to run out of missiles too early. You can either download the new version or just edit the data.ini manually as described in the support topic. Sorry for the inconvenience.
