Which Do You Prefer?
Rodent replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Time to play bumper jets! I actually managed to bump their wing off without taking much damage myself. Did it in a moment of minor frustration, and uh suicidalness. Worked out better than I had hoped so I went with that. -

Give it the armament of the spectre gunship, but forward facing. -

For some reason that comment made me picture a missile with a gun.. hey a rocket propelled radar guided gun pod. ..excuse me while I go make an appointment with my shrink. -
B-1B Lancer AKA "The Bone"
Rodent replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Really? I was under the impression it had much longer range than that. And that it was faster. Hey this wasn't about being realistic anyway but about being crazy. How do you think a phoenix would have performed if it had continued to be upgraded? Looking at the AIM-120D my other suggestion of using Meteor looks like it would be uneccecary too. What is the max effective range of the Meteor anyway? -
Which Do You Prefer?
Rodent replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I have moments of each, but currently I am enjoying killing stuff on the grond a lot. It is just satisfying somehow to watch a big building turn into a crater. Perhaps almong the most fun missions I have had lately was close air support with enemy fighters on a role to take out our ground troops too, so we had to fend off both ground and air. Modern air to air fights can get exciting too, especially if you start with the enemy on your tail. -

Maybe with a scramjet type long range missile sort like the Meteor? Or here is a crazy idea, make it able to carry and launch Phoenixes! -
Sounds like the only way you can get help is to get a hold of a GM in game, if they still have those. I haven't played wow in ages but it seems standard fare for MMOs that you can try to contact a GM in game who will then live chat with you within the game client. I only tried WoW very briefly and never had to use it, but most other MMOs I have tried use "/petition" to get support from within the game client.

Your first combat flight sim...
Rodent replied to Gunrunner's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
My very first... I think that was F15 strike eagle for the ZX Spectrum. Not exactly very advanced, it was far from capable of any 3D rendering and everything was represented by 2D sprites. Even the runway. I remember it being quite difficult to land. The first one I got serious with was F19 Stealth Fighter for the Atari ST. I also remember playing Fighter Bomber a bunch. -
H.A.W.X. Physics are about as realistic as the driving physics of the Outrun 2 arcade. I would not call this a sim at all. It is an action game with airplanes. I doubt anyone would call Outrun a driving sim but as soon as aircraft are involved its apparently a simulator

Not requiring a hundred billion switches is one thing, but completely disregarding any laws of physics is another. The manouvers I have seen the planes perform in the trailer would tear the planes to pieces, and after performing those manouvers they accelerate away with what I figure must be 80G at least. Also the latest trailer showed what appeared to be a laser guided sidewinder blow up a tank. Of course it could just be the editing but it still does not bode well. Does not Tom Clancy's name usually stand for at least some level of correctness? Everything I have seen so far shows for a complete disregard for just about everything. Edit: That came out a little bit more negative than I first intended. I don't have anything against arcade style gaming. I just don't think this should have the Tom Clancy name on it. I don't mind arcade style games, they can be quite fun. My own stance is I like something a bit more realistic more but there is nothing wrong with prefering Arcadey games. I just personally find that a decent sim holds my attention and interest a lot longer than a quick arcade fix.

Perhaps the last thread I ever start about Thirdwire avionics

If the engine can calculate things well enough to show accurate enough guidance to the player, would it not be possible then to make the AI follow those instructions? -
Point of Interest To the Thirdwire Community
Rodent replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
When I point something out that doesn't seem right, I only mean to be helpful. Perhaps that was something that was not meant to be there or a mistake the creator made that he/she/they never noticed. I tell of things I notice that seem wrong since I believe they would like to correct that, and not just to complain. If I do come across as an ass when I point a thing like that out, please bonk me on the head and tell me to find a way to say it nicer. -
My motherboard is fried, again, for the 5th time in as many months. GigaByte Ultra Durable 2 series. Never had any trouble with any others but this type just keeps burning itself out. I have switched PSU, RAM, CPU, and video cards, but they keep burning up. The only thing I have not changed is the case. If they have been victims of power surges I still would think the ultra durable ones should have lasted longer than the not durable ones on the same electrical sockets. Getting a bit frustrating to say the least.

Thanks everyone for the advice and tips. I have a motherboard from a different supplier now. Also, yes, I have inspected the case thoroughly and nothing is touching where it should not. I have done this each time I replaced the mobo. I also keep spare cable ends strapped out of the way. I hope this will last a bit longer now. Just came to mind another incident where I had a video card malfunction on me pretty early, and then it came to light that one of the people in the store I bought it from handled some components very badly and was likely to be the cause of my problem. I don't know if it means anything but getting one from somewhere else feels better at least. ...please don't burn up or explode
-
I have one of those wriststrap things that is grounded. Also the latest motherboard was working fine for almost 2 months before it just decided to fry itself. That main plug is where most of mine have fried too, when it wasn't a capacitor that burned.

The Spectre is coming...
Rodent replied to Dels's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I don't suppose it is even possible to make them into auto aiming turrets that track your ground targets? I guess it is an entirely different thing to have a camera track a target (like with mavs or lgbs) to having a gun do the same. Still looks like an awesome plane and I would love ty fly it and blow stuff up even if I do have to move the entire aircraft to aim the guns. Just thought it would be cool if possible, but I fully understand if it isn't, or if it is too much work to be worth the effort. And as I mentioned in another thread, it would be neat to have communications with the crew of your own aircraft. Select a ground target and tell your crew to attack it rather than telling your wingmen. I guess this also can't be done but hey I guess my post isn't about whats possible but what would be cool. Maybe sometime in the future with updates to the base sim? -

That is why they call them missiles ...I am so awful sometimes I want to kill myself. Anyways more screenies. This is my new favorite loadout for the Gripen on support missions. I learned to not let my wingmen have any LGBs though so those are just for me. IRIS-T if enemy planes are attacking my ground troops, Meteor in case they are over the area before I am, and the LGBs for enemy tanks. This setup lets me tackle most hurdles thrown at me. Only thing missing is AGMs for dealing with SAMs but I usually let my wingmen carry those and send them in to clear up some, if needed. -

Oh so that is why my knee is bad? I still wanna know though if there is a difference between sims. I have myself been in the situation where I fix something for one guy and that breaks it for another, and when I fix it for him it breaks it for the first guy again. -

I was starting to derail the screenshot thread a bit so I deleted my last post there and thought I would bring that discussion about my wheels here instead. No actually the wheels on that Vark was fine (as far as I can remember). It's the new ones that were going backwards. Perhaps there is a difference in how SFG interprets the .ini from other thirdwire sims? Anyone else using the new ones in SFG that can confirm? -

Its an old screenshot, but I thought it worthy of posting anyway. I just forget sometimes if I already posted one the same day. Don't worry I got the 2.0 ones, and love em. Awesome job on those! -

Just did re download and install it. That line is not there in the .ini and in game the wheel is rotating the wrong way again. Just to clear things up, this is the download I speak of http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=8138 It appears to be all 3 aircraft in that pack. -

I guess that might be true. I downloaded it early but only just now noticed the wheel rotation and did not realize it might have been fixed already. I guess then I am sorry for wasting everybody's time, except blackbirds ;)
