Wings over Africa Conversion
Bossco82 replied to Bossco82's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - World War II Forum
It'll be showing the tga's I bet, what does it say in your aircraft .ini's Stary? I'm sure that tga's still work in SF2. -

Stary, I've already got the guns folder sorted in SF2 style and i've done the weapons folder with the bmp's and lod's in folders SF2 style. I can compress them and email them over to you if you want. When I was talking about the damage texture's I was referring to the SF2 format aircraft files available at Capuns site that are in dds format. Not all aircraft were effected but some for example the Heinkel 111 H3 when hit would just go black or beige instead of showing damage over the skin. When I looked into it the dds file had lost its transparancy. I also still have the origional aircraft files for SF1, so I followed Brain32's instructions and converted the origionall tga into dds and they worked. Only done it for the Heinkel 111 H3 and the Aircobra but they are working for me now. -

I think i've worked out the problem with the dds files. I followed Brain32 instruction in the KB for converting targa's into dds. It seems something went wrong with the origional converion and the dds files lost their transparancy. I converted the origional targa's as an example for the Heinkel 111 H3 following Brain32's instructions and hey presto the Heinkels showed damaged while keeping the camo skin. Great guide Brain, top man. I'm gonna reconvert the ones i've got, if anyone wants them, Capun, Stary etc etc just ask. They should be finished by tomorrow maybe Monday. -
Advice please -2 installs at seperate patch levels?
Bossco82 replied to Icarus999's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Hi Mate, When the May 2011 patch came out I had a similar thought. I don't think its possible though. Its limited by the fact that the options.ini has to go in the users/savedgames folder, I don't know of a way you can make a seperate install and point the game to put the option.ini somewhere else. -

I've cracked the weapons and gun folders now. Still trying to get the dds files to work, not all of them arn't working its mainly the larger German bombers. The dds files are there and the aircrafts .ini file seems to be correct. I'm wondering whether its something to do the lods, i'm out of my depth looking at those though. -

I did try opening the weapondata and gundata ini's with TK's editors but my version doesn't see them for some reason. Are they referring to the SF1 editors, the previous SF2 editors or the most recent May 2011 editors. Thanks in advance. -

I have to agree between Skatezilla and Stary on this one. It is TK's game to do with as he pleases at the end of the day, if he loses fans or upsets a customer group at the end of the day thats his choice to make. I like Stary and many others do wish that since the May 2011 patch I could alter an ini file and double the fading distance for the trees. My favourite game of the TW lineup is Vietnam, in fact I like it so much I built a custom watercooled sandybridge setup so I could play it with unlimited settings using all the eye candy modders have made. I dont play any other games I built my system solely for Strike Fighters, so TK if your reading thats how much of a fan I am and i'm sure i'm not the only one. However my love of the TW titles is its modability. I love the fact that I can buy it and change things just to my taste. I totally appreciate TK's work to provide somthing that simply isn't available anywhere else. Although 50% of the reason I play these games is the work the modders do to make it even more realistic, Vietnam is a classic example. Locking out part of the game engine is something I hope isn't continued or expanded on. The lack of modability is why Il2 sits in its dvd box and isn't even installed on my system, I know there are thing like UP.20 but it just isn't the same as Strike Fighters for customisation. To sum up, TK I appreciate all that you do on the SF titles and look forward to what the new F-14 tomcat has to offer but please keep the ability for us to modify it to our own taste as that is the reason many of us but the titles in the first place -

So far for me the expansion packs seem to work ok. I havn't bothered altering the aircraft .ini's and skins and decals seem to be ok but I dont pay these much attention anyway. As for the falklands mod, unpack the menu cat with the old extractor and put its entire contents into the menu folder in the saved games folder. I did this and my menu's for the falklands mod work fine. -

Recommend a joystick for SF2
Bossco82 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Hi, I've been using a Saitek X45 i got 2nd hand for SF2 for a while now. Its always been quite stiff to use due to the spring tension but now its sensitivity is getting less and less. I've used the cable tie trick to keep the stiffness down and altered the dead zones to keep the sensitivity but its got to the point I have to use half the axis of the stick to get any input. Can anybody give any recommendations on a decent stick to replace it with. I do like the look of the stuff from CH Products but its costs too much. Does anyone know if Saiteks X52 range is any good or does it suffer from the same stiffness/sticking problem as the X45. Cheers -
Is it possible to limit the number of aircraft that appear
Bossco82 replied to Slant6's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Very simple mate, you should only have this problem in campaigns. So, open the campaign_data.ini for the campaign you want to fly and set, maxsecondarystrike=1 or 0. This will limit the amount of secondary strike aircraft that will fly as its mainly aircraft on a strike mission dropping bombs that will affect you framerates. Hope this helps cheers -
Recommend a joystick for SF2
Bossco82 replied to Bossco82's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
To Romflyer ans Xcusive8, Which do you have the X52 (silver) or the X52 pro. I've been looking at both but couldn't find a review that mentioned the spring tension sticking problem. I like the look of both but wanted to confirm whether the spring tension problem had been rectified since the X45. Do you think the pro model is worth the extra outlay? -

Is it happening with all the aircraft in your SF2 install? I came across this problem when I was making some of my own radar textures. I forgot to rename the texture I had made in the avionics.ini therefore the game couldn't find it so the scan beam just filled the screen. If you can post a screen shot of whats happening i'll see if its what I experienced. -

FLIR/TV screen slowdowns
Bossco82 replied to ST0RM's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Using the TV to guide weapons does cause some fps hit. I found slightly widening the weapons POV limits how much it affects the FPS hit. Put it this way I now have a Sandybridge based system overclocked to 4.6 GHz and its the first system i've built that will allow me to bomb Hanoi in SF2V with a LGB using the TV in a F4-E without having a FPS hit. Thirdwire claim its from using high graphic settings, because the ground object your targeting is rendered twice, other than that I have no solution for you, sorry bud. -
I'm not sure about OFF but my old i5 760 ran SF2 extremely well. However my new I5 2500k sandybridge processor runs any flight sim better than any processor i've come across.

Framerates
Bossco82 replied to GunnySonics's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Hi Gunny, If your willing to shop around on ebay for a 2nd hand bargain Nvidia GTS 250's and GTX 260's are available in your price range. Regarding your problem with the Vietnamsea terrain, the problem is because of the amount of AAA and SAMS, the concentration of them in one area is significantly higher than the Germany and Desert terrains. Are you running the stock game or the Vietnam Expansion mod pack from here. I ask this as I have several backed up versions of the Vietnamsea target files with reduced AAA and SAMS, they take very little away from the gameplay but help with framerates. I'd be happy to share them with you. -
Framerates
Bossco82 replied to GunnySonics's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Upgrading to Windows 7 and using dx10 would see a definate increase in framerates. I've used a few graphics cards as I regularly upgrade my system. Its really dependant on what you want to spend. A GTS 250, GTX 260 or GTX 280 would be an excellent upgrade. There are many good 2nd hand deals on ebay for these. However if you can afford it I know the new GTX 460's with 1024mb perform well. I currently use a GTX 470. The vietnamsea terrain especially around Hanoi and Haiphong will stress cpu and gpu processing power the most within SF2. -
SF2V Air & Ground Expansion Pack V.2.0 + Exp.Pack 2
Bossco82 replied to elephant's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
The only fix I fornd was to go into the vietnamsea.ini in the terrain folder and change the weather chance entries. Lower overcast and inclement and incres scattered and broken. Adding "Clear=xx" also helped me. -
If you have windows vista or xp then SF2 is the way to go, DX10 gives much better framerates and gives better fps, it also looks much more realistic. There are new flight models especially with the new expansion that also offers multicore support again giving better fps, There are also more ground objects and much more realistic cockpits to enjoy. In short, if you have vista or window 7 take the plunge and buy SF2 you wont regret it.

Who has smooth framrates below 60fps?
Bossco82 posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Hi, All of my SF2 installs run at 60fps with vsync on. However if the framerate drops even slightly below 60 it looks awful, it might be at 50fps but looks more like 3fps. Is this normal or do I have a problem. I only ask as while browsing the forum it seems that a lot of people find 30fps playable. Thanks in advance -
Who has smooth framrates below 60fps?
Bossco82 replied to Bossco82's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Thanks Mike, well I wouldn't have noticed until I installed decB and got no impovement from turning up my settings, all cores are being used but its not enough to give a solid 60fps. It could be something to do with Windows 7 64 bit! I thought I installed something wrong but then noticed other SF2 users get smooth framerates below 60fps when for me anything below that results in this stutter. I've got 2 tv's that accept hdmi so i'm going to plug the pc into those to see if there is a difference. I'll keep investigating it and if I find the solution i'll be sure to post it up. Thanks again for all the replies:good: -

Bossco82 replied to Bossco82's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Thanks for the reply Mike, 1. Tried a vanilla install mate same problem. 2. I've checked the FPS counter, it stutters at 40fps-210fps which leads me to believe its something to do with having vsync off and a screen thats set to 60 hertz. If I have vsync enabled the stutter isn't there as long as I my system can produce 60fps, as soon as it drops below that it stutters. 3. Got the 258.96 drivers installed mate but no difference. 4. It could only be antivirus but thats been disabled too, I've also tried disbling aero but no luck. 5. Tried stock clocks on GPU and CPU too, no change although in game fps is obviously less. I'm stumped mate, my system should be able to run SF2 maxed with all the eye candy since DecB. Like I said my FPS is easily high enough, its like the screen i've got just doesn't cope unless its getting a strict 60fps. -

Bossco82 replied to Bossco82's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I'm patched to decB aswell, my problem isn't exactly framerates. With unlimited setting over hanoi in linebacker 2 using an EO weapon my fps is in the mid 40's. However if I don't enable vsync I get stuttering/tearing. Its not so bad that you can see it when flying straight and level but in any maneuver its as if the screen can't keep up. When it stutters I see anything from 45-210fps, my problem is somehow vsync off/refresh rate related. I'm starting to wonder if its my screen. How are you connecting to your Sony screen, DVI,VGA or HDMI? -

Thanks Mike, well i'm using 1920x1080 and Windows Home Premium 64 bit, so thats not the problem. Do you run SF2 with Vsync enabled mate? I'll try the pre rendered setting mate.
