An Ode To Flight Sims
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to CaptSopwith's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
My journey through computer gaming began with Silent Service II back in 1985. Little blips on the screen with sound effects and primitive graphics. Around 1992 I ran across Doom and F-117 Stealth Fighter. Somehow I missed Red Baron I, but found a download for it while reading about Red Baron II. Loved how you could hide from the enemy by flying into the sun. Finally bought Red Baron II just before it was patched to 3D. Joined Delphi forum, and my love affair with flight sims was set in concrete, which is limited only by the ever increasing technological demands of the genre and my limited budget. I agree that fight simmers are a unique, smarter, slightly stranger, and (mostly) friendly group. Great write-up, Captain Sopwith! -

Engine damage questions

Thank you guy's for your comments and observations. All is appreciated. I'm particularly happy about your questions regarding the fueltank. Whenever I release any of my damage mods, I always consider them to be works in progress. With the Ultimate DM, one of the areas that I was still unsure of was the damage to the fuel tanks. I gather that many of you feel that the fuel tanks get punctured too easily in the current version of the DM? Does it apply to all aircraft or just some? I can make adjustments to some or all of the aircraft to lessen the number and/or severity of the fuel leaks, if desired. -
HPW Weather Files and HPW Skies (optional)
Herr Prop-Wasche posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - File Announcements
File Name: HPW Weather Files and HPW Skies (optional) File Submitter: Herr Prop-Wasche File Submitted: 04 September 2011 File Category: Modding Tools and Add-on Software JSGME Installation: Open up the HPW Weather Files 2.zip file and open the HPW Weather Files 2 folder. Inside this folder, you will find the following files: 1915 ActiveSector 1915 QuietSector HPW 1916 Weather Active Sector HPW 1916 Weather Quiet Sector HPW 1917 Weather Active Sector HPW 1917 Weather Quiet Sector HPW 1918 Weather Active Sector HPW 1918 Weather Quiet Sector Copy these files and paste them into your JSGME MODS folder. All of these files can be used either with or without Bletchley's active sector/quiet sector mission mods. JSGME will show a warning if you use my 1915 mod with Bletchley's, but my mod only replaces his weather descriptions for 1915 and will not effect your mission types or the changes he made to the flak settings. What do these files do? These files adjust the mission frequency for your squadron depending on whether you are in an active or a quiet sector of the front. At various times in each year between 1915 and 1918, a particular region in France (Flanders, Marne, Verdun, Alsace) would become either active or quiet, depending on the level of air and ground battles (Alsace is always a quiet sector). The OFF Manager always tells you whether you are in an active or a quiet sector of the front. Simply activate the appropriate HPW Weather file for either an active or a quiet sector. In active sectors you can expect to fly more missions per day, and you are more likely to fly in poor or inclement weather. Quiet sectors, on the other hand, mean that you may fly only one or two missions a day, and that you won't usually fly in rainy or otherwise very poor weather. HPW Skies (optional) The optional HPW Skies mod will add a few more cloud types and will generally add a little more variation to very good and good weather patterns, and will give you a better chance of having almost completely clear skies in very good weather conditions.YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO INSTALL THIS FILE IN ORDER TO USE THE ABOVE WEATHER FILES. Here are some from inside the museum DH-4 (Sorry, first one is a little blurry) Spad VII Spad XIII I noticed that the wings of the Spad XIII are higher than the wings on the Spad VII, giving it what appears to me to be a little better view forward from the cockpit than in the Spad VII. I agree that the forward view from the Spad VII is terrible, but the view in the Spad XIII seems to be improved. -

Here's a few of a non-flyable, but full-scale, Morane Saulnier AI. Wikipedia reports that these aircraft were fast, with a top speed of 140 mph. They flew for the following Escadrilles: 156, 158, and 161 in early to mid 1918 before they were replaced by the Spad XIII--supposedly because of wing failure problems. Which makes me wonder--The Fokker D VIII had the same problem. I wonder if some of these reports of wing failures were made by pilots who felt a little skiddish about flying a one-winged aircraft. I mean, two or three winged planes lost wings too. Perhaps the loss of a wing in many cases was the result of battle damage and overstress, rather than simple design deficiencies. Something to ponder, at least. -

I was surprised by the thickness of the wings on most of the planes myself. Since these are 7/8 scale reproductions (no rotaries, etc.) I'm wondering if the wings are modern airfoils to give better and safer performance in the air? Watching several of the aircraft in flight, I noticed that all of them climbed at very shallow angles--no more than 20 or 25 degrees or so. None of these planes could "hang on their prop." They could easily gain 100 feet or so, but any more than that and the craft began to slow down significantly, so the pilot had to level out and gain speed again before climbing again. More pictures coming. -
