  1. Another Book For My WWI Aviation Library

HW, I was recently reading about the end of WWI and had an interesting thought: what might have happened had Hitler not been gassed and missed the end of the war in hospital? I can't recall the exact date when he was gassed, but I know that he was still in hospital at the end of the war. It must have been quite a shock for him to hear of the German surrender. In contrast to his mates in the front line units, the last experience he had of the war was most likely during the spring offensives, when the Germans for a time looked like they might actually win the war. Not surprising he was so ready to accept and propogate the "stab in the back" theory. Still, Hitler being Hitler, it probably wouldn't have made too much of a difference.

In general, Olham, I agree with you: the bond of soldiers can be quite strong--even former enemies. I'm sure that Bullethead would attest to that. OTOH, I'm not sure if the experiences of WWII pilots forty or fifty years after the war necessarily equates with those of WWI pilots five or ten years after the war. Also, most WWII veterans now recognize that most German pilots were merely soldiers in a war started by an evil political regime. Although a few were dedicated Nazis, as you know, most were only doing their duty and had no choice in the matter, so may be more easily forgiven. WWI pilots after the war may not have been able to seperate their own political ideology from that of their former leaders as easily as their later WWII comrades could. Here in the USA, I used to recall hearing from some old vets of WWII that they would never buy a Japenese car because of what they experienced in the war.

The numbers are in hexdecimal, with A=10, B=12, C=13, D=14, E=15, and F=16. To represent colors in CFS3, each number is preceded by an 0x. The first two numbers after that represent opacity, as explained above, and the next six numbers represent the amount of red, green, and blue or RGB values. Each color ranges from a value of 0 to 255. So, 0x00000000 is a solid black, representing the absence of color, and 0x00FFFFFF is solid white, representing the maximum amount of red, green, and blue mixed together. Red= 0x00FF0000 Green=0x0000FF00 Blue=0x000000FF and so on.

Nice find, Lou. I'm looking foward to hearing from you about a book about the air war written by someone from a German perspective. Isn't it fascinating that after the war he served as an instructor in the French Air Service? I wonder what the circumstances were behind that and if he experienced any difficulties coming from the "other side" in the Great War?

Thanks Hasse Wind. Yep, employment in the US of A is a bit of a struggle right now. They say that a recession is when somebody else loses their job, and a depression is when you lose your job. So, I guess we are officially in a depression.

This version of the damage mod is intended to be used only in conjunction with Jonesoft's Generic Mod Enabler and should not be installed UNLESS JSGME has already been installed into your CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields game folder. With JSGME, installation and use of this, or any mod, is very easy. Simply extract the contents of the HPWDM2.2 zip file into the MODS folder which is created when you install JSGME into OFF. The mod is correctly installed if you see the readme.txt and the following folder structure inside the MODS folder: HPWDM2.2\aircraft\Alb_DIII_AC1, etc. To load the mod, simply run JSGME, highlight the mod you wish to use, click on the top button, and then start your game. That's it! NOTE: This mod may be used in QC battles AND the main campaign. ------------ Version History 2.2 --Engine hit points for Hannover, Sopwith Pup, Sopwith Strutter, and Sopwith Strutter B1 reduced slightly. --Missing minor fuel leak due to engine damage added to Sopwith Tripe and Tripe 2G. --Hit points for elevator cables in aft fuselage of Fokker EV, N17_Bis, N24, N24_Bis, N24_Bis_Lewis, N24_Lewis, and N28 reduced to be consistent with other aircraft. --Hit points for observer/rear-gunner corrected so they are now the same as the pilot of the aircraft. 2.1a --DH2 and DH2_m16 now somewhat less likely to catch fire than in version 2.1. --Halberstadt scout now slightly less likely to suffer major fuel leak. --"Fuselage_structure" changed to "rudder_cable" in aft fuselage of FE2b and hit points reduced from 28 to 18. --Hit points for aileron cables in aft fuselage of Alb DV, DV later, DVa, and DVa 200 reduced to be consistent with other aircraft. 2.1 --Fuel tanks are now more resistant to major leaks but are still susceptible to minor leaks and are somewhat more likely to catch fire if substantially damaged. --Wing and wing-tip hit points adjusted on some aircraft. --Nose structures now slightly stronger in several early and mid-war aircraft. --Somewhat higher probability of pilot "hits" for most aircraft. --On DH5 only, fuel tank hit points now higher for main tank, slightly lower for secondary tank. --Eliminates the "engine block popping out of the fuselage" effect seen in some aircraft. 2.0 Initial release ------------ Thank you for downloading HPWDM2.1, a total revision of my previously released damage model for Hat in the Ring, the official extension to Between Heaven and Hell, the wonderful WWI flight sim modification of CFS3 by OBD Software. DM2.1 uses information about the dimensions and specifications of every aircraft in HITR in order to develop revised hit points for each major component of every aircraft currently available in OFF. The correlation between the historical size and dimensions of each aircraft component and the number of hit points assigned to that component in the game has been adjusted so that this correlation in now generally positive, instead of negative, as it is in many cases in OFF and previous versions of my damage model. Engine hit points have also been adjusted so that the average aircraft engine has approximately 5% more hit points. Hit points also better correlate with engine size or displacement. Most importantly, engine hit points now do not necessarily directly correspond with the chances of an engine catching fire. In the standard HITR installation, most aircraft are "set" to catch fire when 75% of their engine hit points have been used up. This percentage has been adjusted in almost every aircraft so that some will now catch fire when a smaller percentage of hit points have been used up, while others will only catch fire after a higher percentage of hit points have been expended. The overall result should be somewhat more durable engines and longer and more dangerous dogfights. Fewer aircraft (including your own) should suffer from an immediate loss in engine performance after only a very short, early burst into the front of the plane. On the other hand, once you notice your engine is no longer running smoothly, take it as a good sign that you may be about to turn into a blazing fireball! Other changes from the stock damage model include: stronger wing roots with somewhat weaker wing tips, resulting in aircraft wings that suffer from fewer catastophic failures but that are more difficult to control when severely damaged, i.e. you may be able to still fly, but landing becomes a much bigger challenge; slightly decreased chances of crippling aileron control cable hits; slightly reduced hit points, on average, for ailerons and rudders; and increased hit points, on average, for horizontal and vertical stabilizers. Pilot and observer hit points have also been adjusted to make both you and your AI opponent more vulnerable to becoming wounded--perhaps fatally! However, in contrast to previous versions of my damage model, hit points for oil and coolant reservoirs have been increased back to, or close to, stock levels. Numerous other tweaks were made to take into account time period of service, overall aircraft reputation for durability or weakness, notable structural problems in various aircraft (weaker lower wings in Albs, for example), and overall game balance. Finally, I would again like to express my thanks and appreciation to OBD Software for their help and encouragement in the making of this damage mod. Of course, with the exception of the tweaks contained in this damage model, all work remains the sole work and property of OBD software. If you have any questions or experience any problems with the installation of this mod, you can reach me at www.combatace.com at the Over Flanders Field forum. Thank you and I hope you enjoy the mod!

I must apologize for not being around much and seemingly only posting in my own thread, but my internet time has been severely curtailed for the last several weeks because I lost my full-time job and had to drop my home internet connection. I will be picking up a part-time job teaching next week and will hopefully be able to get back on-line sooner rather than later. On the plus side, I have had more time to work on my damage mod, so I have been able to make a couple more fixes and tweaks. I'm at the point where I am 98% satisfied with the DM, so I have decided to release an update. The update is 2.2, and will contain the following changes (includes the changes noted below in 2.1a): Other than correcting any errors, all that I really have left is some testing to see how the aircraft behave if I reduce the values of the elevator, rudder, and aileron cables from their current value of 18 to 8 or 9. Those changes will be in version 2.3, if my testing confirms that lowering these values do not have any overly adverse effects. In the meantime, I am uploading version 2.2 to the 3rd party mods forum right after I post this message. Happy flying!
  8. Paul Blum's Story: A BHaH Pilot's Saga

One minor quibble--I don't think Queen Charlotte would have allowed herself to join the "mile-high club" with Herr Blum alone in his kite, even if he is a war hero and owner of an Iron Cross, first class! The scandal!
  9. Watch this space!

Hello, gents! After I posted version 2.1 to the forum, I fired up OFF to fly and test the DH2 a little more. The DH2 has been frustrating to mod, as it has refused to live up to its nickname, "the spinning incinerator." Well, I had forgot that I had made one itty, bitty, tiny little change to the DH2 DM just before I packed everything up in a zip file and uploaded 2.1 to the forum. Well, you can probably guess what happened: all my DH2 pilots and wingmates were getting shot down in flames! My last change to the DH2 apparently made them go from fireproof to something a little more flammable. Although you can still fly with or against them and not always get them to catch on fire, I felt the effect was now overdone, so I went ahead last night and did a quick little fix up so that they are more resistant to fire. Attached to this post is the fix to the DH2. Simply unzip the file into the MODS folder of your JSGME installation, start JSGME, apply HPWDM 2.1 if you have not done so already, then apply the update. P.S. The update also contains a minor update to the Halberstadt.

I saw Winston's note and realized I may not have thanked you for this mod. Really great work! Maybe I have a hidden sadistic side, but I can't help but grin sometimes when I hear the sound of an exploding engine with your soundtweak--unless it's my own, of course! Thanks, C!

Okay, the update to the HPWDM is ready and will be uploaded to the forum for approval in just a few minutes. As I have probably mentioned before, once I start tweaking I find it difficult to stop until everything is "just right," so that is the reason for the slight delay. From the 2.1 readme file, here is a list of the major changes: --Fuel tanks are now more resistant to major leaks but are still susceptible to minor leaks and are somewhat more likely to catch fire if substantially damaged. --Wing and wing-tip hit points adjusted on some aircraft. --Nose structures now slightly stronger in several early and mid-war aircraft. (This slightly lowers the chances of catastrophic fuel leaks). --Somewhat higher probability of pilot "hits" for most aircraft. --On DH5 only, fuel tank hit points now higher for main tank, slightly lower for secondary tank. --Eliminates the "engine block popping out of the fuselage" effect seen in some aircraft. (Olham may especially appreciate this one)! A major part of work on this update was in adjusting the likelihood of fire and fuel leaks. One thing I wanted to do was to slow down the rate of fuel loss from major leaks. Now, although the chances of a fuel leak are about the same, you are less likely to completely run out of fuel in only a few seconds. Be careful, though! As long as you still have fuel, you can still catch on fire. Out of the frying pan, they say.... I hope everyone enjoys the update. As always, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, just let me know right here.
  16. Watch this space!

Gotcha on the "flamers." I can't be entirely positive, but based on my tweaking and testing, I think one way to eliminate them is to adjust the hit points on the wings, wing-tips, and maybe the ailerons so that the engines do not get too damaged before the wings have accumulated much damage. I was working on the DH5 and noticed that occasionally one would light up but keep going in a gradual descent before eventually crashing. I found that if I reduced the wing and wing-tip hit points that more planes would go out of control before catching on fire and that the ones that did catch on fire tended to also go out of control because of excessive damage to the wings. Just something to think about, I guess.
  17. Paul Blum's Story: A BHaH Pilot's Saga

Marvelous storytelling, Lou! I am only half way through reading, but can tell you have had some interesting exploits. I particularly like the way you have sprinkled in the authentic German words and awards--really adds to the atmosphere of the piece! To Herr Blum: Zum Wohl!
  18. Watch this space!

Thank you for the endorsement, Hellshade. Nevertheless, there is always something else that seems to cry out for tweaking! My update should be ready either tomorrow or Thursday. In addition to the fuel leak problem, the update will slightly strengthen the nose of some of the early and mid-war aircraft and make some small adjustments to the "fire chances" of some of the Albs and Nieuport's.
  19. Watch this space!

Duh! Just after posting, I realized what you are talking about. You must be talking about the old P2 bug where some planes caught fire but kept on flying, seemingly without ill effect. I haven't noticed this testing my DM, but I will be on the look out for it. I could be wrong, but adding an "explosion" effect immediately after the fire event might reduce the chance of "flamers."
  20. Watch this space!

Pol, Perhaps something got lost in translation, or maybe I am growing more dense with each passing day, but I can't quite make out what you are saying there, old bean! To be honest, although I copied and pasted a fire effect line into the fuel tank component to try and add a little more "fuel to the fire," I don't know if I've actually been able to trigger the effect--the aircraft is usually so shot up by that point that it crashes of its own accord before any flames from hits to the fuel tank have had a chance to appear. I've noticed that fire most reliably appears from shooting up the engine, however. Perhaps you are saying that the engine is the only place where you can get the plane to catch on fire, even if you (or I) place a fire "trigger" in some other component?
  21. RIP Mike Leo

    Salute.
  22. Watch this space!

A short update on the DM... I will be releasing an update for the DM in a few days to deal with a problem I have noticed with fuel leaks. The new DM may have resulted in some fuel leaks becoming a bit too common, especially major fuel leaks that result in all of your fuel draining out in 30 seconds or so. I have revised this so that instead of a minor leak followed by a moderate leak, you get two minor leaks instead, followed later by a major leak and an increased chance of fire if the fuel tank is substantially damaged. I haven't noted any other problems, but if you think you have seen something wrong with the new DM, now is the time to speak up!
  23. Flying time still not correct?

I'd like to put in a good word for vonOben, as well. He has been helping me to test my DM and has been very supportive, even though I am sure he disagrees with some of the things I have been doing, too. I know for a fact that he is never malicious or says anything out of spite. He's just a passionate fan of WWI aviation, as are 99% of the other visitors of this forum. Carry on...
  24. What I'd like to see in Phase IV

I have to agree. It really isn't WWI up there without swarms of two-seaters flying about!
